Well I picked up this huge 40% yak and I needed a big engine for it. I opted for the Kroma 180 from DR Hobbies, I gave sales rep Todd Blose a call and in 3 days it was in my hands.

I happened to have a set of 125cc cans and headers from a DA 150 so I tried them on for size. I ended up opening up the bolt holes to the next largest size and it bolted right in. The ports were a little smaller so I opened them up a bit also. Tod recommended using 3W 200 headers, and I did buy them, but the port opening was practically the same size as the 150 so I used the 150 headers.

I installed the engine in the plane then it was time to fire it up. With the help of a couple friends to hold it back I choked it, throttle to half and 5 flips it fired off and quit. Choke off, throttle to idle, 4 flips and away it went. I figured for a new engine it would have taken a lot longer than that to get it running but all of us were surprised at how quickly and easily it started. Man what a wind storm behind this thing. I'm using a 32x10 for a breakin prop then I'll jump up from there.

We ran it only for a couple of minutes as it was getting dark and didn't have time to get to the flying field, but I was more than happy at how it started.

Plans are tomorrow to go flying, weather permitting, but I'll get more pictures, rpm numbers and perhaps a video then add onto this review.

Here's a few to start with:

Nice! I'm interested in this engine brand to. I know Max Blose really well and I've seen his son fly a bunch. I'd like to get a DR 2.6M Extra to and i'm sure they would try to sell me one of these. I'm interested to see what you find. Everyone I read about that has one really likes them.

I got a chance to put 4 flights on it Sunday and so far I like it. I'm still running it rich and it's a little boggy from throttle up so I still need to fine tune it for good throttle transition.

I'll get more info after I have a chance to tweak the needles and get some time on it.

Well I put 3 more flights on the Yak tonight and with each flight I tweaked the low needle a little each time. I think I'm getting close, the transitioning is getting much better each time.

As for starting, I'm pretty impressed on how it starts. First start of the day was 4 flips choke on, fires. Choke off, 4 more and its running. On the 3rd flight I didn't use any choke and fired off on the second flip, you gotta like that. For the $1495 price tag, I think this 180 is a good deal.

I'll get some video still but it won't be anything amazing, I'm still learning how to handle this big plane and I have a long way to go in learning 3d.

I'm now up to 5 1/2 gallons through this engine and I really like it. It starts super easy, runs really well, and I know it's only going to get better.

Here's a couple videos for the proof.

That's freak'in ridiculous, I can't hover or harrier yet and you're doing it from behind your back .

I'm done with the break in process now and I've run 2 tanks of synthetic through it now. I did notice it richening some and the prop noise is louder now since I put the new oil in it, I'm using BelRay mc-1 synthetic.

I do have a little problem with fuel blow by or blow out though. I believe it is from the prop blast over the carb and drawing some of the fuel out since the carb sits almost out in the open. I bought a large intake from 3W and after enlarging the holes it bolts right in. I did have to replace the carb bolt as they were not long enough with the intake on. I'll have a chance this weekend to do more playing around with it and see how well it likes the new intake.

Anybody happen to know the function of the capped off ports on the top of the cylinders?

looks to me like they have used basicaly the same casting originaly used for a piston ported single, and thats the exterior of the intake port that you can see (in other words a carb would have fitted there)

I'm bringing this thread back up from the grave. Any update on how the Kroma is performing? I'm seriously considering.

I originally had the 180 with headers from DA for the 150 with a few alterations to make it fit. I also had muffler cans for the exhaust and I was getting 5800 rpm with a mezlik 32x10. I was having problems with the cans, headers and the teflon connectors, part of it being very limited room in the tunnel, and burning through the connectors.

I since changed to stock mufflers, a little louder noise, but I picked up 400 rpm and now get 6200 rpm and a huge performance boost over the cans.

This is what I now recommend because there doesn't seem
