Hello guys

I just recieved my New GSS. I layed out all the parts and am currently pre-reading the instructions like we all do right
I am planning on going hard all weekend and with any luck have it finished early next week. I have decieded to go with the SPE-43. I had been planning on the Fuji BT-34 but the problem I had is one I am in canada and was unable to find a distributor that had one most had not even heard of the 34.and secondly all the problems reported on this site and others about RF problems. The 43 seems to be almost the same weight as the fuji 34 and aprx the same bhp so I figgured there should be no problem with the extra CC's. I got a pits wrap around muffler with the engine also I hope that will make for a cleaner installation(less Cowel cutting).

One thing I noticed about the SPE over the Fuji is the metal spark plug boot and the braided sleeve over the ignition lead. With any luck that will keep the evil RF demons at bay. I only have FM radio systems so my fingers are crossed. If I have to go to 2.4 Ghz I may not be flying it for awhile!

What do you guys think about this setup?

Bye for now

Thunder

PS I too am interested in Brians rebuild! Information we must have information!! LOL

I think your going to love it. I was out just last night flying mine. First flight this year on the GSS. Only had 5 or 6 last year. What a great, smooth flying plane. Everything you do with it looks so gracefull. I have a Fuji 32 EI in mine and it flys plenty fast and with more than enough power, so a 43 should be really powerfull. Have fun with it.

Thunder,

Tower Hobbies carries the Fuji BT34EI, that's where I bought mine. However, which engine you choose, make sure that you keep all switches, wiring, servos, and radio as far away from the engine and Ignition wiring as possible. Most ignition engine manufactures recommend 12 inches, this is not always possible to do, but should serve as a guide. Servos wires to the aileron should have one turn in each 4 inches to prevent the wires from acting as an antenna and picking up unwanted noise from the ignition. In fact all long servo wires should have the same twist, but the aileron servo wiring extending on each side of the airplane presents the worst problem. During the late seventies, I flew several airplanes with the old Quadra magneto ignition engine and never had a problem. The radios of this period were AM and much more Susceptible to ignition noise than the FM radios of today.

James,

As I recall, you could never get the Quadra in your Mr Mulligan started so you never did experience ignition noise. I can remember the hundreds of flips. How's the new field coming? PM me when you get a chance.

Bob,

Your right about flipping the prop on the Quadra that was on the Mr. Mulligan, what you don't know is that I made a pulley for the front of the propeller and used a pull cord to get it started. After that it usually started on the first or second pull. I had about 30 or 40 flights on the Mr. Mulligan. It was very underpowered, took the length of the runway to get airborne and then lumbered in the air. But it looked good in the air. If you look carefully at the propeller hub in the second picture you can see the grove that the cord was wound on. This was in 1976.

Yeah I saw that they had it but like I was saying I live in Canada. Tower is great but when us canadians order from the States we get charged "Brokerage" fee's and when it's a pricer item it can hurt. So I was wanting to order from Canada.
If you get stuff sent in USPS you usually don't get the charge but Tower told me they would only send UPS who always Charges me the Brokerage fee.

Thanks for all your info I will try and incorperate it as I proceed!

Ok! I just spent like 3.5 hours trying to get the damn covering so it looked mediocre at best! If thats what Great Planes calls "Expertly covered" I think they need to get a new line of work! I would sure hate to see a beginners job from them!
I wonder if the 24 hour build time includes the time trying to fix thier horrible covering efforts....

Finally after getting that done I was able to get started. I tried to glue any areas I could reach with Slo Zap. Got the servo's mounted in the fuse and wings.

I have read somwhere someone say somthing about putting tin foil on the firewall to combat RF. Is this somthing alot of people do? If so how is it applied?
I am not sure I fully understand what it would do since RF is transmitted out in a uni direction and foil in one place would in theory only block it in a single direction. Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks
Thunder

Thunder,

I'm the one who did. Someboduy gave me this tip, and I did it. I don't know tjhe tech stuff behind it, but it works.

What I did: I took a 1/16 ply, cut a square out of it and wrapped it with thin alum foil, the one used to pack sandwiches. I screwed it to the latest cavern and passed a wire from one of the screws to ground it on the engine block. Also, I took one of those Futaba plastic servo boxes, wrap it the foil and installed it like a shelter, as a "C", right before the receiver. Also, I grounded it with a screw to the engine block.
g
It worked. Before I did that, if I moved 30 feet from the plane with the engine on, all controls were moving around. After applying this technique, I have no glitches whatsoever, after 40 + flights.

If you need, I can take some pictures of what I did and post it here. Let me know.

Ok thanks Flavio

I will do this now that I have a better understanding of how you did it. If pictures are not to much trouble that would be great, but if it causes you some grief don't worry about it.

What do you people think about wrapping the long servo leads in aluminum foil or braided mesh (somthing like in coax cable) and grounding that to the engine?

I run Futaba . Some have said about twisting the wires but the futaba leads are connected to each other and laid out in a flat ribbon style so I don't know how those could be twisted so they would stay twisted, or even what that would really do since there is no path to the ground on the engine :|

Again any info is appreaciated

I'm putting my GSS together and have run into a concern. After installing the servos in the aft I find that the servo arms, on the side where I installed two servos, interfer with each other. Not by too much but I'll probably have to shorten the arms or put the arm on the rudder pointing down. I realise turning the arm down will cause a small alingment problem but I was planning on useing ball links on all three of the aft servos anyway. Has anyone got any input or ideas. I also note that the elevator servo arms are not in the same relative position in relationship to the horisontal stabalizer, the difference being about .4 inches.
Thanks for any help,
Richard
