Status: offline 		I have the Fuji 32 in mine, and I had to add 6oz in the tail to balance. It flys really well....NOT like a 3-D craft, but like a pretty zippy SuperSportster!

I do have a couple of Xoars as well, but I figured I'd start with the Top-Flites since I had them just in case of any landing mishaps. The thing flies so nice, I'm not sure that's gonna happen though. Even in a 20mph wind today I didn't experience any real surprises. I was a little apprehensious about landing in that kind of wind, but didn't really have any problems. It does tend to float a little, so I'd watch out for that.

Edit: Haven't weighed it yet.

chris8105, while I wouldn't call it slow, it's definately no speed demon. You have to remember that the bigger planes tend to do everything slower. I've been flying a Mini Ultra Stick (36" span) up till now and compared to the Sportster, it looks like a pylon racer. The Sportster is what I would call a docile aerobatic plane. It's not meant for 3D but could probably do just about any IMAA-type manuver in the right hands.

As far as the stab failure earlier, yes it's been a known problem on the Sportster, but as the posts about that earlier in the thread say, it can be avoided by sealing the hinge gap and adding a couple of support struts or flying wires. I haven't seen any such behavior, but I haven't been doing any high-speed down-line runs, either.

Status: offline 		G2300 would be a bit small I believe. I have the 3250 on mine with 18X8 or 18X10 prop and its great combo. It fits nice under the cowl. Slimline makes inverted pits for it also.

I was reading back through the thread and had a couple questions about servo setup. Doesn't putting the pushrod closer to the shaft on the server give LESS surface movement?

Mine is setup on the outer holes on both ends and I had to crank the transmitter to 140% to get the recommended high rate travel. Am I asking for trouble doing this? I haven't even flown it on high rates yet, but I'd like to make sure I don't get any surprises when I do.

Status: offline 		Interesting to say the least. My 3250 will pull the 18x10 but it really likes the 18X8 better. I would be inpressed to see a motor .5 ci smaller pull the same prop as the 3250 at a higher RPM. I would guess the smaller motor would be more suited to the 16X8 prop. But hey, Im just a casual bystander, set it up with the smaller motor, If it wont pull the numbers it claims, send it back. If it does, you get lighter weight and less cost!


Tower does not carry the inverted slimline , I ordered mine from slimline itsself.

The number one rule in buying any engine is NEVER believe the HP numbers. The 3250 will turn 7700 with a normal size prop (18x8?), so that 3.28 figure is believable, but there is no way a 2300 will turn 12600 on any prop you would ever want to use. My 2300 ran very strong, and it turned a 17x6 at about 9000. I don't have the formula here to figure it, but at 9000, the 2300 is probably making more like 2.6 BHP.

As every racer knows, there is no substitute for cubic inches.

Status: offline 		A G26 might fly this plane, but would be a little lite on power. The G38 would be very heavy. I would get a Brillelli 40GT for this plane if you want a gasser. It is only $40 more than a G26 and is a few oz's ligther than the G26 with the power of a 40cc engine. The suggest Fuji BT32 is 9 0z heavier than the Brilleli 40GT.

Just my 2 cents.

Seems to be to me. Had a couple of hard landings on the first day, one in a recently harvested cornfield cause it deadsticked and couldn't get it back against the wind. Nothing seems to be bent or broken.

Status: offline 		I see that the brillelle 40gt is lighter and has more power than the recomended fuji 32. Can the brillelle be mounted with the engine mounting hardware included in the arf? I looked at the manual for the sportster online and seen the stuff you have to buy for the gas conversion. This will be my first gas engine on a rc plane, any tips and tricks getting it mounted onto the sportster?

One more thing to ask, does it come with a spark plug and kill switch, or anything else?

Status: offline 		The Brillelli 40 comes with all the hardware you need to mount on the firewall. Used the blind nuts from the kit with bolt screwed in from the back which left them sticking out of the firewall like studs. Mount the standoffs on them, then mount the engine on the standoffs. You just can't use the mounting template that comes with the ARF, but it's pretty easy to locate the mounting holes for the Brillelli.

I also wouldn't use the included pushrod. I used a Gold-n-rod and it worked out very well. The only other thing you really have to buy is the gas stopper kit for the fuel tank and neoprene or Tygon fuel tubing.

Oh yeah...locktite the hell out of just about everything with blue.

Status: offline 		You do need a manual switch to operate the EI, which is a manual kill switch. If you want a remote kill, your best bet is to get an optical that you can hook into the receiver. Not a bad idea in case you lose the throttle servo for some reason. They will also kill the engine if the switch loses signal, so if you lose complete radio control, at least it won't auger in a full throttle (or take out a row of spectators).

Not at all. I went through the same thing with this plane since it was MY first gasser also.

Here's what I did:
I got 2 of these (one for the radio and one for the electronic ignition):

The optical kill switch sits in series with the switch on the ignition. It is also plugged into a channel on the receiver that you set up on a toggle switch. No servo needed.

The switch you linked to is more for magneto engines that can't be cut off remotely except using a servo-activated switch. I think the optical is more fool proof since it doesn't rely on a servo and if it loses radio signal, it shuts itself off.

If you look at the last picture on my build page, you can see the two Ultra Switches on the side of the plane.
