Just got in from trying something I've wanted to try for a while. I mixed a blend of denatured alcohol, camp fuel, and castor oil. Might have used too much castor. Lots of it was blowing out of the engine. I tested my blend of about 25% castor, about 8% camp fuel, and remainder denatured alcohol in a reed valve cox .049. After a little needle adjustment, it started well and ran smooth. It may not have been making as much power as regular glow fuel. I don't have a tach but it didn't seem to have as much thrust. The engine ran very cool. It was dark enough out that I could see the orange glow from the exhoust ports. I ran a few tanks of the mix through the engine at first intentionally running a little rich. Even after leaning it out some, the engine ran cool enough that I could touch the head and cylinder right after it ran out of fuel. I may see if I can tweak my mixture for a little more power. Anyhow, it was fun.

It's good to see someone willing to experiment :) That orange glow is from the glowplug and it's interesting watching the glow change brightness when you richen the mix or throttle up and down. It shows how the plug adapts itself to the conditions and changes the ignition point. I remember when I was a kid I flew a B class team racer at night and the only way I could tell where the model was came from the glow through the exhaust. I wouldn't dare try that today :)

Tried my experiment again Tuesday after work. I had initially used a 5-3 prop. For comparison I tried a 6-3 and then a 6-4. Still using the same fuel blend as before, switching to the 6-4 prop made a big difference. It seeemed that rpm dropped some but the amount of air being moved and the force with which it moved seemed to increase dramatically. In a few days I hope to blend another batch of fuel in slightly different proportions and run my test again. I doubt that I'm breaking any new ground here, but so far I'm learning and having fun.

Finally back at it. A few days after my previous experiment, I tried a mix with more gasoline(camp fuel) but was unhappy with the result. Yestarday, I tried a mix of 20% castor and 80% denatured alcohol. I filled the tank and gave the prop a few flips, connected the battery, primed the exhaust ports, and gave the prop one or two easy turns. On the first honest to goodness "I'm tying to start this thing" flip the engine fired up and was running. So quick and easy it scared me. I adjusted the needle, removed the battery, and readjusted the needle. The engine ran strong until the tank ran dry. It seemed to have plenty power for flying. Then the disapointment, after refuelling the engine wouldn't fire a lick. Still I will try. Finally, it fired, popped back and sliced my finger. The engine didn't start and run again until it had completely cooled down from the first run. Then it was getting dark so I called it a night. I'm not declaring a success yet because on about 25% nitro I can refuel and restart instantly.
