wow, so pretty much the motor upgrade is a must. where can i find the frio and about how much will it run me? Thanx mr. boogie & silver for the gear suggestions. I didnt even fly yet but i can tell the gear is gonna bust. the plane is too heavy for this gear and the small screw for an axel is too unstable.but other then that my paint patterns and decals are awsome ill have to post it up this week. thanks again.

oh i almost forgot. can i use a regular mini servo for the retracts. on towerhobbies there is a hi torque mini servo but do i have to use that or can a reg. do the job.

Hmmm,

I heard from my LHS and the guys at modelflight.com.au that the p-51 was not so good for too many people, with too many problems and is no longer available.

Abjet,

I used an HS81MG for the stock retracts and for my GP units. The movement on the GP units is much better than the stock units and may work with a mini servo, but the HS81 is not much more weight and has good torque for actuation.

AUW of my build is 23oz.
Here's a vid of her in action.

clovus,
I'm up to 35 flights so far and the only issue has been the stock retracts.

Hi all

Just started P51 build. I spent nearly an hour adusting the lack of down lock on the retracts. Has anyone else noticed the very high force needed to lock down the gear.....much more than any servo can pull, that's for sure! Now, having filed the actuator 'cam', it can lock up or down, solidly, with hardly any force at all.

I wonder if this has caused so many gear collapses?

I'll post a pic if anyone needs it.

The original retract gear are junk they will break with the first or second slightly heavy side load applied during takeoff..trust me that is going to happen...the trunnion just breaks... it's way to thin at the drilled hole for the pivot bushing. On the other hand the Robart Mini Micro work great!

I found the same problem you've found with the siding lock block... to much force to lock for most small servos. I reworked the block itself and got it to work and lock great... but a the end of the day that's not the problem. The trunnion is too week and it will break. When it does break on takeoff roll (usually) you then are going to chew up the prop and possibly damage the motor.. just get the Robart gear and that problem goes away!!! I have had many many flights now with the Park 450 motor 9 X 9 apc prop! Lots of power and speed. Oh I'm not using the neat looking spinners that come with the airplane as they block too much cooling air.. that is required.

The airplane even at sea level is probably a little to heavy for the size of the wing... aspect ratio is too high. If the wing was about 3 inches longer each side or about 5oz lighter the airplane would be much better.. at all altitudes. My field elevation is 5,400 feet MSL.

Hi,
Just received a request from dbd, as to how I created a steerable tail wheel for the UltraFly P-51. I bent a new wire assembly as follows.

Make the top bend in the tail wheel wire assembly into a simple control horn-loop to which a wire push-rod is looped for connection (control horn to push-rod connection). Metal-to-Metal yes but I added a small drop of RC-56 to rubberize the connection for zero RF...Kind of a makeshift assembly to be sure, but with careful bending and testing all works well.. Oh you will have to dig out some foam material so the top looped portion of the wire tail wheel horn assembly will clear for easy movement. Both the rudder and the tail wheel push-rods will be connected to the same rudder servo.

Complete this assembly before joining the fuse halves! Also make sure you make the tail wheel control horn bend in the correct direction (same side as rudder horn will be mounted!) Sorry I took no pictures of this work.. See drawing of this assembly on the UltraFly P-51 with Flaps & Retracts
NOTE:
Tail-wheel assembly is working better than I would have expected.
Also the Robat Mini Mechanical retracts are working great... over 100 flights to date.

Hi Silver,

I did this exact same tailwheel setup using the small steerable tailwheel from Hobby Lobby. Both rudder and tailwheel work off of the same servo. My plane is not flyable yet, thus have not had a chance to try it out for real. But the fuse is all set up with the electronics and seems to operate pretty well. Nice to know someone else did the same thing and has so many successful flights on it!

would small carbon fiber rods strentghen the landing gear enough to make them reliable ? if not i was thinking of leaving off the landing gear and everything else i can to lighten it up as much as possible and just fly it in the grass field across the street and just land on the belly. will this plane stand up to the abuse of belly flops???/thanks

Most who build this plane replace the stock retracts with the Great Planes .10 retracts. Inexpensive and much stronger.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone been able to find this model for sale anywhere? Seems Tower is no longer the distributer and nobody seems to have this model in stock. Has anyone found a dealer?

I Googled around a bit and came across this: http://www.modelrectifier.com/rc-products/planes-ultrafly.asp

Kinda nice that you can buy the pre-painted version without the motor. I'm thinking about ordering one up now.

Hi!

I bought the Great Planes retracts but they don't fit the housing.

Too narrow an opening for the retracts.

Did you make any adjustments to the housing? Dremel?

What prop are you using with the FRIO? The only difference in my setup and yours (in the beginning) was that I used a Phoenix 35 amp esc. I did have the provided spinner on the prop which almost completely covers any air intake directly to the motor. I actually opened up the P-51 air-intake scoop under the nose, but as I said before the FRIO... FRIED... during the second flight.

A couple of years late, but this is only a 150 watt motor. 11 volts and 15 amps puts you over the limit.
I use a 10 x 3.8 prop, 3 cell 2000ma, 20 min. run time and no problems.
