Anyone started on the UltraFly P-51 from Tower Hobbies? I began tonight... first thing I see is that a steerable tail wheel is a must modification! Working on the method for doing that now. This foamy is high quality smooth and full shape...no flat foamy here... kinda like my Formosa only a little better finish cause it's already painted.

I would like to work & report along with some others who have this ARF... this is no beginners electric ARF. I'm hoping to achieve similar performance like my Formosa.. it flies right along with the big gas powered Topflight P-51's Boy does that piss them off

Just started mine today, reckon this is gonna be a fun little plane. Flaps and retracts on this size is quite incredible I think. LIttle unhappy with the presentation out of the box tho, few dings ect, but I suppose its a foamy. Was going to fibreglass the entire plane, but I decided against this as I felt it may add to much weight.
Plane is already half built going together very quickly. I'm meant to be building a large Extra at the moment, but here in Aust it seems almost impossible to get a traditional buildidn kit, oh well this will tied me over.

Hey guys....im really tetter-tottering over buying the Ultrafly p-51 w/ the brushless motor for $119 OR buying the Hobby-lobby mustang for $119 just for the plane, seems a little pricy, but I know they have good quality items in the hobby too. Any suggestions??? How is the FRIO10 for the UF mustang? any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Finished my Ultrafly today and flew it twice... first flight was surprisingly good, second flight wasn't as good! Findings so far: The FRIO 10/10 motor got so hot during the second flight it left a smoke trail.. it is now junk. So two flights on the motor with the prop that is supplied and it's history. No wonder the advertising emphasized the cooling fan... think about it why did they even speak of the cooling fan unless the motor design has a heating problem?

Going to install a HiMax and be done with the problem. Also found out the landing gear are not very strong, on takeoff roll for the second flight the left retract gear broke.... not landing no problem there, on takeoff a little side load and that was it!

So now with two flights on the airplane I must switch out the motor.. and order a new retract gear unit.. not the best of recommendations. I'll report later how these repairs / changes work out.

The airplane does fly great.. much like other larger versions of the P-51 I have flown for years. Used about 15 degrees of flap on takeoff & landing, the flaps sure didn't hurt the slow flight ability of this little Mustang. This is no beginner's airplane..... today's density altitude here in Denver was above 8000 feet MSL. OAT was about 90 degrees.

Some good pointers there Lee. I was going to order the Frio motor but now that you mention the over heating and burn out I think I will install the Himax I have laying around. You did a nice job on your aircraft, Im thinking of doing some other colour scheme. I saw one done out in RAF colors and Im thinking of that since I hail from Scotland. Look forward to your next reprotings on the himax engine install and flights since you propably will have that done before I up in the air. By the way where did you hear about the Frio overheating and the cooling fan ..I want to read that just out of interest.

The Ultra fly P51 flies great with the new Align 450L 1100. The Himax 2816 is good too, but a little more expensive( approx $73 vs. approx. $47). HOWEVER, the retracts on this model are sub-standard to say the least. If you have that paved runway they may be OK, but not on any thing else. Even with paved, the shafts "rotate" and there's no "set screw"(even the GWS micro's have that). I'm on my third pair of retracts courtesy of both my hobby shop and then Great Planes. I'm surprised Ultrafly released this gear on an otherwise decent kit. My only other comment is that it builds"heavy", and don"t make the mistake of pushing the CG back, major snap/spin event will follow! Meanwhile, I'm putting together another GWS Corsair which is always a pleasure to fly. If anyone knows of balsa/laser ply ARF's in the warbird category using motors like the himax 2816 or even the 3510/1100 so I can keep in the 3S1P lipo battery category, I'd be pleased to know about it.

Yep the weak point is definitely the gear. Broke my second one today with a slight side load on takeoff! The Locking / actuator molded plastic trunnion is not engineered for any strength at all. See Picture below, photo not the best! Look how thin the plastic is where the main gear pivit axle passes through the locking Trunnion! It measures less than 1/32 of an inch thick. Wonder if anyone could make a metel replacement part, oh well just dreaming a little. The brass pivot pin is strong but too large in diameter. It goes through the locking / actuator trunnion and the plastic trunnion sides are so very thin as to provide no strength at all. The gear easily break while locked down with any side load at all.

Does anyone know of another retract gear that is stronger and will fit? I am using a HiMax 2816 motor with a 9 X 9 apc prop. 11.1 2100ma Lipo... and that combo really makes this P-51 a high performance foamy. If I can find the right kind of gear the airplane will be a great flyer.

I'm working on converting mine to a much more detailed model.I hollewd the fuse first,it will be covered in silkspan tissue and Poly C,a light, strong finishing system.
As you can see, I'm going all out, cockpit interior parts are from Depron, not finished yet, needs paint in there!

Canopy will open and slide, pilot removable,am thinking of going with Robart 1/2 A retracts, used them before, light and durable, seem a good match for this model over the stock supplied ones.

Here are some pics.
