In my opinion...You'll never notice it. No one will if you don't point it out. Flightwise, again..you'll never notice it.

Hi,

I hate finding a problem like this part way through a build, I have been there although my problems seem to involve finding warps and twists too late to change, none have proved fatal . . yet!

I can't believe that 1/4" will make all that much difference, some full size aircraft used to have one wing longer than the other on purpose to counter torque reaction.

If it were me I think I would sand 1/4" off the tip, turn a blind eye and recon I could trim it out, rather than starting again at this stage.

Simon.

I don't think you'll notice when you fly. I've made bigger mistakes on smaller planes.

I am nearly at the same point myself. I will measure mine to see if the measurements match. I agree with Slug. Sand a little off the long wing, or double check the side-to-side balance before final finishing. Unless you are planning to fly pattern with it, don't worry. Keep your chin up.

It won't make a bit of difference Wizen. You would probably find much bigger discrepencies in most models out there. I'd just keep going the way you are.

It will fly fine this way, it would be a much bigger problem (flying in trim) if the 42 3/16" measurements were different (same as adding rudder while flying straight and level)

The plans will shrink and expand with temperature (and moisture / humidity) also.

Make sure to reinforce the mounts for the retracts. Those plywood beams are not very stout.

RCM had an article in what I think was December of 1997 that showed how to re-enforce the retract landing gear on the Topflite P-51. I'll look back in the archives to see if I still have it. If I remember right all it said to do was re-enforce the corners of the retract bars and the the corners of the ribs with triangle balsa.

Wizen: Don't go through the work of building a new wing. The important measurement is that the wing is square in the fuselage relevant to alignment. The plane will be just fine just like it is and you won't notice any difference in the way it flies. Make sure you balance the plane laterally. You have done very nice work here and it would be a shame to waste it.

Thanks for the replies!!!

That really made me feel better...

I have read the RCM article about reinforcing the retracts mounts and did so while i was building the wing...I added 2 pieces of 1/4" plywood on each side of the retract ribs and one in the back joining all the ribs together creating a extra rigid structure...

I know this is a little bit odd but i never flew an airplane before but i have flown rc helicopters for almost 5 years...So maybe when it comes time to fly it i will get a trainer to practice on even thought in my mind I am sure that i could fly it....

I would highly recommend that you fly something else besides this a/c as your first airplane. even though you can fly rotorcraft, it's not the same. different, not necessarily harder. practice on something you have a little less invested in, then if you dumb thumb it, you won't be so po'd!!

happy new year.

It sounds like you are going to take all of the good advice and go ahead and use that beautiful wing you built. I couldn't agree with joe more that no matter how much Helicoptor time you have flying a fixed wing aircraft is different. Look at it this way. How many good fixed wing pilots do you know of that transitioned into helicopters and did it without stacking up a chopper or two in the process. Very Few is the answer and the people that sell repair parts for model helicoptors know that only too well. With your previously acquired RC flying skills I'm sure you will pick it up rather quickly as I know the hand eye coordination is there but it is a totally different flight situation and getting the feel of it should be done just like most of the rest of us did and that is with a trainer type aircraft. Once you are comfortable with landing the trainer move up to something with a low wing and then on to your Mustang. With the amount of work that you put into this plane it would be a tragedy to loose it because your helicoptor fingers did not tell your plane the right thing to do. Give yourself every advantage. You won't regret it!

Even if you had some experience with a low wing trainer, moving up to this mustang will be a different experience. I took mine out one day for its maiden flight, and it did not fly or land like any of my ARF warbirds. It flew great, and the take off was nice and scale. However, when I tried to land it like an ARF, I ended up ripping out the left mounting rails for the retracts. Looks like I will need to learn how to land all over again.

Here is a pic of the plane ready for take off:

Here is the scale take off:
