A simple suggestion that may help -

When you set up, disconnect the motor.

Then you can observe the movement of the head/linkages independantly. Add collective and watch what happens. See if you can determine why sufficient pitch isn't being added, or how much pitch is added at what collective settings.

You may need to keep the flybar straight by hand to get a good idea what is going on.

Remember to check the motor really is disconnected before you throttle-up.

Hi Stigjones.

Hope you liked it over here :)

Helicopters have two methods of control of the rotor blades. Cyclic pitch control and Collective pitch control.

Cyclic varies the pitch as the blades turn (eg, up on one side, down on the other). Each blade is controlled independantly, and one might be up while the other is down.

Cyclic gives you forward/backwards/left/right movement.

Collective pitch varies both blades in the same direction, at the same time, and maintains is regardless of where the blade is at that time.

Collective gives you up/down.

It's collective that you may be having problems with. Either collective pitch or rotor speed (RPM).

When the motor is disconnected and you are holding the flybar horizontal, if you "Throttle up" the pitch should increase positively (eg, the trailing edge of the blades will dip down). At maximum "Throttle" or with the throttle stick all the way up, there should be a noticeable pitch increase, while with the stick down, there will be negative pitch (ie, the blade trailing edge will be higher than the leading edge).

If you don't get enough positive pitch, then you may need to adjust the transmitter.

If when at "Max Throttle" you adjust the two knobs at the top, and the pitch changes, then you know your transmitter is unlocked and not set. Then that would be your problem. Otherwise they may still be out.

If you have plenty of pitch at the top, then it may be a power issue.

Don't be too wary of the hobby shop. Even if they don't show you how to set up, if they set it up, then at least you can use this as a yardstick to know what it should look like when it's set up correctly. (For when you do learn to adjust it later).

if it is the rpm what can i do about it because the pitch looks good but how can i make run faster and how do you adjist the belt??? yes i did like perth so much we are moving over to perth for good after christmas if the migration want us?????? with my skills passed!!!

Heh, Welcome back then Stigjones. What sort of work do you do?

If it's RPM, then it's most likely a fault with something.

Possibly the battery... Maybe the gear mesh or something else.

What battery do you have with it?

David

stigjones -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (5/13/2006 12:43:10 PM)

hello David i am an electrician
i have the original battery but i got a new one and one of the servos has packed up its on order and just waiting and that i found that the tail rotor blades were the wrong way round would this have any thing to do with it????

oops -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (5/14/2006 4:33:50 AM)

Hi Stigjones.

The tail rotor blades being the wrong way around would cause control issues, but wouldn't stop it going up.

A bad servo might take up some power, and could affect control but isn't likely to cause issues.

It could still be a battery issue. Or the power getting to the motor. Or a bad motor.

When I had similar problems to you once, I got some 2kg scales and bolted the Heli to the scales (after zero-ing the bolts so only the heli showed on the weight). Then I sat back and powered it up and gave it collective.

Pretty soon, I could see how much lift I was getting... And how easily it was producing it.

You need a LOT more lift than you'll get from the ground to fly, so at least you can get an idea if you have enough to hover in ground effect.

Also, a test like this lets you listen to the motor. Is it running out of puff? Are the blades stalling? (Stall point is where more collective gives less lift). Is the drag too high for the motor?

Be careful with the heli bolted down. All kinds of bad things can happen when you are up close -

Maybe even use the LHS for advice-

David

Chocks -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (5/14/2006 6:22:00 AM)

Ok, I am new to helis and I just bought a 60. I have dinged it twice but I have figured out why yours won't fly. I do not know what they are called but the two linkage rods that run from the servos to the main rotors blades need to be adjusted. Mine would just barely fly at almost full throtle. After unplugging the motor and plugging in the battery I looked at how things were working. At over 3/4 throtle my main blades barely moved so I shortened those rods and now I can actually fly it. Of course now I have a bad glitch that knocked straight down and broke the tail rotor linkage. Does anybody know how to get rid of the glitch? It very anoying and getting expensive. I have checked everything that I can think of.

There is a lot being written in the walkera fixed pitch forum. Have a look there.

stigjones -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (5/18/2006 7:38:42 PM)

David can you help i have got it sorted be there has been a problem! The swash plate has gone the the elbow joints and the pitch linkage it has been rubbing and now there is nothing left of it can you help????????[&o] and just waiting for parts???

stigjones -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (6/18/2006 2:19:13 PM)

Hello i have got a new motor speed control and battery the helicopter flys like a beast but the is one problem the Helli keeps wanting to go or tilt forward i have tried the trim and the swash plate is level can any body help many thanks Steve.

there may be to much wieght at the front, make sure the battery is as far back as it goes.

crashing fool -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (1/21/2007 4:58:09 PM)

i have the same problem, my 60 wont get off the ground... i have the brushed sd-400sd and brushed speed controller...650mah nimh battery....

stgjones, you bought a new motor and battery and you can now fly it??? i should have bought the brushless motor and lipo version....

anyone have my setup and does your 60 work??

Digital Anval -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (1/24/2007 7:31:31 PM)

You guys should cruise the walkera60 thread " RE: WALKERA 60 "
155 pages of solid solid ..uhhhhhh...stuff.

Start on page one even .

oilyamps -> RE: my 60 wont fly????? (5/17/2007 2:45:21 AM)

FWIW, I bought a 12v nimh (10 cell) version too, and it sure won't fly! It staggered around for the first few charges but now won't lift off at all. Avoid this version for sure.
And they claim it to fly 3D out of the box! Yeah, right!
Changing to LiPo's was a revelation, but is probably hard on the stock motor, but I have had a lot of fun with it. Brushless conversion coming soon.
I am also going to try some 8 cell nimh Stryker packs for learning as I have those to hand. I am not into 3D, I just want to fly helis! I have been a fixed wing flyer for yonks, and I am looking for a challenge. Not this size challenge tho! But its fun if you are careful!
