Bigdanusa your Cub makes mine look like a junkyard dog. I tend use use mine as a beater now too. The patchwork in the pic is black duct tape from a temporary patch 3 years ago. Runs with an old MDS 40.

I have a Balsa USA Stick 40 Plus that I bought for my Son-In-Law about 19 years ago. The plane came back to me when they moved out of state. I flew her fairly regularly for a few months, then hung her up for a time. Then she came down for an Overhaul and a new engine and we were off and running again. That has been repeated several times since, and she's still going strong. In the beginning she had her share of hard landings and such during my Son-In-Law's "learning days," but that passed and she is still around making me look good. My two Grandsons learned to fly on her too. I am really comfortable flying that plane, knowing that she is able to take anything I throw at her. Sometimes it's almost like we communicate with each other during a flight. If I get to grinning during a flight, someone will say "There he goes again, talking to that thing!" That plane has given me more pleasurable flight times than any other plane I ever had. Do I look at her as a "Beater?" No way! I think of her as a Survivor, an old and trusted friend, the old "Vet" cause she's Been There and Done That, like me." I'm 76. She is 19, but in "Airplane Years" that surely must be close to 75 or so Huh? I do love this hobby.

Timmy45140,

I'm not too sure about that. My cub is now missing the cowl, wing struts, and also the wheel fairings. Sure is fun to fly though.

As far as my SSE, it was totally destroyed 2 weeks ago in a mid air collision! Only had about 15 flights on it and was it ever a nice aerobatic plane.

I think we need to have a Ugly Cub thread. I have one that is a contender.

That makes at least three of us then.

Bigdanusa- If you were any closer to where I'm at, I'd offer you an Ace Bingo 40 for $40 with motor. To help you get over that mid air.

My Boomerang 40 is rapidly approaching it's 350th hour in the air! Some of the club members are now petitioning (in a friendly manner) that it be declared either un-airworthy or an eyesore that shouldn't be allowed to fly.

Surprisingly, I can still throw the thing around without the slightest hint of a problem. Oh, excluding my Kamikaze dives which have been known to induce flutter and/or lift the wing.

I have had several beaters, all with there own set of talents.

Twist 40 - great airplane, t.o.&lnd in a small small area, very aerobatic

H9 STICK 40 - exellent beater, high wind no problem, fun flyer

Lost both to a midair at the same time. My son (twist) and I (stick) very dogfighting and he was winning. He's 9 and I am 39 and I was not going to let him stay fixed @ my 6 so I used the only advantage that I had ( SPEED ). I got away from him and we ended up on opposite sides of the field, we proceeded to meet head on and collided almost nose to nose ( 4-5 inches from spinner to spinner ).

one engine , both receivers, and about 6 of the 12 servo's were salvageable.

My favorite beater has to be my SPAD. It is version 2.5 as it stands now but I have well over 200 flights on this version and it is still chugging along. I am horrible to this plane. Anytime I see a cool manuever I have never tried I grab ole faithful and off to the field to give it a try. This Plane has tuaght me most of my aerobatic skills and some begginner 3D flying. I have cartwheeld, groundlooped. deadsticked, and splattered this bird all over the place in my flying adventures but she is still here. One of the pics showed my last collision with a buddy. A new PVC fuse and she was back in there 2 days later. It has now been converted to float duty so I can build something designed for 3D.

hi the planes -i enjoy flying the most for the last 15 years -are the midwest 40 and 60 stiks ( the original ugly stik )-my 40 has about 400 plus flights on it-it was my second plane-it was found in a tree by my friend-showing some real estate- he knew i flew r/c-so he brought it to me-the plane has been redone 3-4 times- it is the first plane i grab-when i have not been flying for a while-tricycle gear. always felt this was a gift from the gods-the 40 stik-was the plane my instructor-flying for 30 years -used the most (he could fly a rock and so can i now ). my 60 stik -a tail dragger-has a 75 asp in it (on a 13/7 apc )- put 3 inch robart wheels on it-it will roll over any surface imaginable-makes for outstanding ground handeling-while giving great prop clearance- 350 plus flights- i hand build most of the 20 planes i have-too many are only flow on a limited basis-and take a lot more tinkering to get the to fly well-takes away from t/x flying time-sometime. these stiks keep the finger working-so flying the other more advanced stuff-is much easier-and much less stressful . you can get the plans for the midwest 60 stik at model airplane news-the wing cord is smaller than a lot of stiks available today- a truly sweet air plane--please remember the stik is a plane designed for the r/c hobby from the get go--very forgiving and relaxing day at the field-----enjoy===tony==

If I glue this mess back together could it be elevated to beater status??????

Honestly, the plane that's the all time beater in my fleet is the REAL THING MOCK II.

.A .15 powered 3 channel thats been broke and rebuilt so manytimes it just shouldnt fly anymore, yet it does! In fact I am rebuilding the nose and firewall from the last high wind escapade......stall spin.......carniage.

Research has shown that hours spent at the field flying RC helicopters will indeed make you a far better simulator pilot.

Mine is definetly my modeltech magic w/tt46. Fly's great there's nothing I won't try with it. I just wished they were better looking. The landing gear is the weak link by far. It has been fixed and safety wired many times.

I always must have a plane that is worry-free.

My beater would be the 4*40. Use to get the fingers nimble in the spring. Also does duty as motor and radio tester. Has had TT46, Magnum 52 4st, ST51, Saito 45, Saito 82. Next up will be another Saito 45 for break in.

I am in the process of looking for a new beater plane to replace my Kougar (damaged it from flutter). I am looking at the H9 f-22, Sundowner 50, and Revolver. I have flown the f-22 and revolver. The f-22 could work if I can take 1-2 lbs out of it (7lbs rtf). The revolver is pretty good (fast and aerobatic), but looks too good to be a beater plane. Now I am checking out the Sundowner 50.

But so far I can tell you that none of the above fly better than the Kougar did. Its fast (not blistering fast but what do u expect from a fat wing), very aerobatic (snaps really hard), and slows to a crawl on landing.

What to do, what to do....

For me their is nothing better than overpowering the Great Planes PT-17 Stearman and going out to the field and putting it through some aerobatic manoeuvres. There's nothing better than that in this hobby for me. It’s a lot of fun. I mean way more fun than a man should be allowed to have flying R/C models. Last year I put over 70 flights on my PT 17 and by the end of the summer, it was and looked like an old beater. It had clear tape on all 4 wings both top and bottom, the tail, and fuselage, but it flew like a bat of hell.

Not a lot of people know this unless you own one. The PT-17 Stearman, is a short coupled bi-plane and therefore needs a lot of extra weight in the nose to balance. If you mount the recommended engine, the PT-17 needs 18 oz of weight in the weight box up front to balance.

So to me it seems like the designers at Great Planes are encouraging you to put a larger motor in them. They even give you a nice thick and strong firewall, and ground clearance fo
