I just got married this last summer. My wife expressed interest in learning to fly so we bought a trainer and built it together. It now looks like a frog. We go flying when the weather is good and she really enjoys it. As others have said, though, I do have to be careful with how much time I spend on it. It can get in the way of doing other important things. All in all, I'm pretty lucky.

Good luck to those of you trying to get your wives involved. I've learned that I need to be patient, but in the end, it pays off.

I'm glad you got your wife into the hobby. My wife complains that the only people here who fly are old men(I'm 33 and the youngest member of my club). I taught her how to fly but she would rather build than fly. She crashed once and, even though I told her it was no big deal and that I have crashed more than I can count in 20 years of flying, she has been afraid of flying since. For her next project, she has decided to take a CG Cub I have in the box and make an Austin Powers Psychedelic Cub out of it. I think she'll probably want to fly that one when it's done.

As for my thoughts, its much more enjoyable to go to the field with her than to go alone. She is my cheerleader when I make the first flight on a plane and my jeer leader when I go to pick up pieces, as occasionally happens. Here's a picture of the cheerleader

My wife flys and was the vp of our club in 2001. She had to decline the presidencey in 2002 due to a long term sickness in the family and she wouldn't be able to attend many of the meetings this year.
When I joined a few years ago no women were around, seemed like a "good ole boy" thing. Not knowing if the club members were interested in having any women members I asked around and it seemed they were all for it.
I took my wife out with me a few times after to watch and she got the bug.
Now there are 4 active, flying female members.
It is really nice to have my "best friend" in the pits with me now.

Learned one thing.......Let some one else teach/coach the wife!
Great way to have a silent trip home when I do it.

Mike

I keep trying to get my wife out to the field but she says she doesn't see the challenge in flying! I tell her it is all challenge! She won't believe me but I can't talk her into taking the sticks of my Zagi. I will endeavor to persevere.

My girlfriend never misses a trip to the field with me. She stays the whole day and complains not. She was ready to solo last summer, but says she just like to watch me now. I did put her on a buddy box last week to break in my new DA-100 for me. Do you think this will all change when if we say "I do."
