Starter fixed and better than before. The 550 motor is nicely made and while the brushes aren't replaceable, the unit has been made to be easier to take apart. A bonus with the motor is that it has a cooling fan and slots and even though I hate slots, I put them into the starter housing to help with cooling.

As suggested, I took the old motor apart and while I can see no visible signs of damage, the last time I test ran it, I had to spin it by hand to get it running and much smoke poured forth. So I went and found some Radio Shack enamelled wire I didn't know I had and I'll take a crack at rewinding it. The wire diameter is similar to the new motor so it should be fun to see how well it works in comparison.

Now wait, there WAS a lot of carbon black on the commutator. I'll go and clean it and see if it'll run tomorrow.

In any event, thanks guys, for the help. Now to go and brew up some fresh diesel fuel and go flying.
