WOW, really disappointed with the GP YAK54 with the DLE30 installed.
Not the flying because I have not got to do that yet. It's the balance
problem! After trying 2lbs of lead it still would not balance so I quit
trying as I am NOT going to add more than 2lbs. Not even going to try
my DLE55 as it is not heavy enough either. The instructions show installing
an OS 1.60 which is lighter than the DLE30 so I wonder what folks
did that used that engine!

repinfl,
Did you move your rudder servos up to the pull-pull position? Other posters using the OS-160 added 8 oz to the nose, but not 2 pounds.
My B-46 weighs 56oz, about 18 oz heavier than the DLE-30 and I have added no weight in the nose and my rudder servos are in the rear. I have even moved my servo battery back a little.

I started this thread when I built this plane. Take a look at the first few posts and you will see that I used an OS and had no problems balancing it. I don't know what you did but location of the rudder servos could be part of the problem.

I placed the rudder servo inside the fuse with pull-pull cable to rudder.
Using 5 1/8" aft of LE at the fuse for CG. Is this correct?

Swapped out the Fuji 43 for a DA-50 on 3" standoffs. Moved rudder servo to fuselage. Balances perfectly at the wing-tube with two 3200 mah LiFe batteries. One strapped around the wing tube area, one next to the fuel tank. Really a nice flier with this combination.

I have a question..I have several Carl Goldberg Great Planes 67" Yaks, bought 6, 3 yrs ago, when Tower discontinued them. Have 2 flying with Super Tigre 90's in them and they fly very well. Not enough power for extreme 3D, but the I'm not in to that. I changed the landing gear out to Carbon fiber, which  reduces landing bounce (makes 'em stick) & attached with break away nylon # 6 screws which saves the plane on dead sticks.

My question is: Has anybody ever taken the wings from the next model size up, GP made a 77" 81" wing span model, and put on the 67" fuse?

The reason I ask is that I recently bought what I thought was a 67" CG GP Yak at the Perry swap meet. Got it home & started building it & the wings have two servo holes each; unlike the wings I have. After measuring, I figured out the guy had the wings off the bigger Yak on the smaller Yak!! He repositioned the mounting holes, etc & it looks good!! BUT, where's the Center of Gravity ???? The smaller Yak calls for 4 1/2 to 5 1/2", The larger calls for 6" 1/4.

Looks like the guy had a 2 cycle on it (it had stand outs attached) so I put a SV 26 gasser on it. With the two 4.8 v bats up front & a 12 oz empty tank (rudder servo is in standard place in fuse, throttle servo on left (Not moved) forward, it balances about on the wing tube or about 5 3/4" to 6" back from the LE at the fuse.  Does this sound right? Would like ya'll input before I maiden it.

Not really sure what tell you Ed. If the planform of the wing is changed (e.g. the chord at the root and chord at the wingtip), you'll likely have some changes to deal with. The CG will have a lot to do with the moment-arm of the empennage and if the wing area is distributed relatively the same as the smaller wing, I'd think your CG would be similar, but I'm not sure.

The 77" Yak manual says 6" behing the LE at the fuse, 67" manual says 4.5 to 5.5" behind LE @ fuse..It balanced right on 5" which I thibk oughta be safe..So what do you think?

I should have listened to you guys. I thought if I use the recommended motor, mount my rudder servos in the fuse, mount the engine 7.125 in front of the firewall, do everything by the book surely I cant go wrong. Right, WRONG,

With the recommended O.S. 160 right now I balanced with no weight 7.3" back from the LE. I need to add 24 get this 24 ozs to even get close to the recommended aft CG point. Empty weight right now is 13lb 15oz. With 24 ozs of lead that puts me a 15lb 7oz empty with. If I can even get that much lead in the motor box.

Great Planes you screwed me. I will never again purchased one of you arfs. I bought a GP Giant Big stick put a dle 30 on it and I needed 36oz of lead to balance it. I can kind of understand that because I put a motor on it that was 30 or so ounces less that the Gas Motor it was designed for. But on this one I use the recommended setup.

Other that scrap this motor buy a dle55 and put on it . Its basically setting here taking up space and is junk as far as I am concerned.

Great Planes I am extremely disappointed in you. I will not trust you again. This is the last big Arf I will ever purchase from you. Its obvious you have no intentions of staying in the gas glow business and Im sure as soon as the Yak 54 inventory is sold to unsuspecting buyers like myself you will discontinue this product as you have with so many others. Your time is past.

i have this plane, been flying it for past 8 months. she has about 25 flights on her. i am using 2 rudder servos as per instructions. i am using two elevator servos in tail.
i am using an OS BGX 3500 (35 cc nitro) with a 32 ounce fuel tank.
prop is 20 x 8 and it turns about 7500 today.
The single fromeco Life battery is as far forward next to fuel tank.
have had some problems with this plane with regards to her flying style. when i KE, she tucks in to gear. i added mix for up elevator with rudder input. then today, with KE, better, still not straight, but i did have to give aileron input to try to keep her straight, OTW, with KE, she wants to try to roll back to upright.
also, when i apply rudder, she wants to roll more than yaw. and the rudder makes her violently yaw then roll.
looks funny, not really, i do not like it. still trying to tune her out.
then, other problem (two really) is the landing gear (they suck) and the canopy has 4 screws, but the blind nuts pull out from ply and they are recessed in, hard to remove at times.
OTW, she is a real fun plane to fly.

Hi Orthobird

This is an old thread but it's nice to notice there are still members who post here.

I'm flying mine since last summer with a Laser 240v glow engine. I guess I have enough power for regular aerobatics but not for 3D which is not a problem for me since I'm not 3D:ing in anyways.

Here's a link of a flying video:

Thanks Orthobird

I do like Laser 4-stroke engines very much. I would call them "sophisticated" or "delicate"..
In the video I was running the model on 18x8 Menz wooden prop. Later I will be using a 19x8 carbon prop or a 18x10-11 carbon prop. Jan Hermkens from the Netherlands is running all his Laser 240v powered models (he's got 6 x 240v) on 18x11 Carbon Engel prop which produces closed to 19lbs (8,5kg) of static thrust at 8000rpm. That would be, I guess, just fine for regular aerobatics.

In case you fly regular aerobatics and not 3d; have you tested props with more pitch and less diameter? Or how did you end up with the 20x8?

regards, Artto

I fitted skies on the model..

If the weather stays ok I'lll be testing the model first time ever with the skies on it. We'll see how much they effect on the aerodynamics..?
