Try Pinnacle Studio 9. I use it with very good success and have easily put together a number of short videos posted here. Just do a search on my name if you want some examples. I hear the new Pinnackle Studio 10 is even better.

This comes up a lot. Search the threads but I think you will find the leaders are Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas Video and Pinnacle. (No particular order implied.) I believe Pinnacle is the least expensive. I use Vega Video and absolutely love it. I have no experience with the others.

Pinnacle is definitely the least expensive. The other two are better programs but cost 5 times or more as much as Pinnacle Studio 9. There is a Studio 10 out BUT you definitely need a fast computer (mine is 1.9 ghz which fits the minimum but worthless) or it wont run properly. I have/had that version. When I installed the latest patch, I could no longer use my CD or DVD drives for ANY other program such as my Roxio programs. ANY attempt resulted in the Blue Screen Of Death.
Finally uninstalled ver. 10 and went back to using ver. 9.
That being said, I love version 9. All my vids were compiled using Pinnacle Studio starting with ver. 7.
I had access to Adobe Premier 6 but it was much too complicated for me as a hobby user. I know I could learn to use it but I wanted to make videos of my flying, not spend all my flying time trying to master the video program.
I have the Studio 9 Plus version which gives you some added transitions and effects and opted for the video card with firewire and analog I/O.

I recommend Studio 9.

what about windows movie maker? or virtualdub? they are free.
and also not long ago i came across presentavid (link). simple and nice video editor. can add callouts, own logos & watermarks, can burn dvd automatically to watch on a dvd player and publish your video in different popular formats (avi, wmv, mpeg, even flash (swf/flv) and gif), also can record a screen (region, window) and then allows to edit it. exactly for those who start with all of these. and for those who don't want something very complecated.

Buy any Mac and get everything you need. No need to buy anything.

easy to say: buy a mac!
buying 1 video editing program (even if it's the most expensive of its kind) is always cheaper then buying a new machine

I find my MacBook with the iMovie software to be most proficient, but I realize everyone cannot go out and buy a new computer just for video editing software. That is not the only reason I bought mine. I would reccomend going with Adobe's Premiere because it seems to have the most options for the cost. I would have included Pinnacle but I have had personal experience and have heard many rumors of bugs in the Pinnacle software and its lack of compatibility. This may not be totally true, but that is what I have experienced and heard.
