Hi all,

I have been wondering what helps clean up the castor oil slime that is now all over the plane, garage, etc... I have been wiping down the plane after every session, but the paper towels alone just aren't cutting it. Although the bulk of the mess is wiped up, the entire side of the plane is slimey and I can't get rid of it. I am hesitant to use chemicals as they might damage the coating? The plane is covered in Ultracote, is there anything I can use to clean the plane without damaging it?

You can use standard Window cleaner straight from the spray bottle. Something like Windex.

I use low odor mineral spirits straight on all my planes (Ultracote & Monokote) without any problems. It takes off all the slime with just one wipe and @ $1.99 per gal its hard to be beat.

Windex, 409, anything like that. When things get really bad, I use
rubbing alcohol.

Thanks for all the info. I was afraid to use something without asking first, and was starting to think the plane was going to be slimey for life! My better half might allow it back into the house now!?! :D

I've tried a few different things and came up with this one myself. It works waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than windex or 409. Take your 16 oz. empty 409 spray bottle and put in one 12 oz. bottle of gas line antifreeze, about 3 tablespoons of a real good grease cutting dishwashing detergent (don't skimp here),then fill it the rest of the way with vinegar. I went from using a whole pile of paper towls to about 5 or 6 on a 40 size plane. And that's getting it real clean not just so so. Just my .02 worth. Works real good for me. Even my buddies want to use my cleaner!

The bottle says methyl alcohol. NOTE!!! It also says can not be made non poisonous! If you use it be sure to keep it in a safe place. Perhaps mark the bottle as so.

Try a product called Dirtex,comes in a pressure can and works really well.

You might also try 'Tuff Stuff" Multi Purpose Foam Cleaner, available at Auto Zone. Yellow and red can.

Seems to dissolve some of the castor.
Not magic by any means, but works well.

Try
Amonia, a good diswashing liquid and water...
1/3 amonia
1 good squirt of dish washing liquid..
the rest water...
Works on anything that I've used it on...Fabricote, Monocote, Micafilm, Rustolieum, latex house paint, Ultracote, Worldtex

I used to soak baby wipes in rubbing alcohol. That worked great, but my wife yelled at me that the wipes were for the baby... So now using windex or rubbing alcohol on my Mono/Towerkoted planes. Anybody know what's safe for sticky back filmed planes?

Here's a formula that i've been using for years, it's just like making your own Windex by the gallon but the cost is muuuuch less, in fact only about 70 cents per gallon........1 gallon jug, add 16 oz. of rubbing alcohol, 6 oz. of sudsey ammonia, 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent (like palmolive etc.), fill to the top with water and youv'e got your self some great Windex..... try it , you won't even know it's not Windex. I've been using it for years on windows, planes, you name it! :)

:) I USE REGULAR ISOPROPYL RUBBING ALCOHAL.I USE PAPER TOWELS TO WIPE OFF EXCESS CASTOR AND THEN USE A COUPLE OF PAPER TOWELS DAMPENED WITH ALCOHAL TO WIPE OF THE EXCESS!IT REALLY CUTS THROUGH THE OIL,PLUS IT`S CHEAPER THAN WINDEX. :)

Yup, I've noticed this, but I've noticed that if you use any good old car wax after cleaning to polish up the polycoat (Mono/Ultra/Whatever-cote), you can bring that shine right back.
