The following is a reprint from the RCCA forum. Plans for both planes are available at http://www.spadtothebone.com

Kraut and I had a hard earned day off today, and spent all afternoon flying his new SpadStick head to head with my Das Plas Stick. Both powered by a GMS .47. I have to admit, his new Spad Stick sure flies sweet...and he is still working dilligently on the plans. My prediction is that it will quickly rise to the top of the popularity list! What a blast!!! Thanks for a great day of flying Kraut!

Results of today:

Appearence: SpadSticks wins.

Top speed: DPS by about 10 mph

Vertical: Dead even

Pitch response: Dead Even

Inverted maneuvers: DPS wins but barely

Roll rate: Spad Stick blows the DPS away

Slow flight: Spad Stick Blows the DPS away

Lowest inverted pass: Kraut won (landed inverted...Ha!!!)

Lowest roll: I won that one easy at the loss of a pair of shorts and almost had to pick runway gravel out of my wing tips

Formation flying: Harder than it looks but some really cool moments! Especially the "you got so close you spoiled my lift" crossover!

Who had the most fun: Impossible to judge that one!

Dean "Tattoo" Tuinstra

Here are a couple of shots from the field. We tried to get a formation shot - but that is very tough to do.

We both had a blast flying these planes! The two things that stuck out from flying were (1)Dean's lowest ever "on-the-deck" roll I have ever seen him perform (it was way low)in fact after he got done showing off - I asked him just what the heck he thought he was doing - especially since we didn't even have an audience - he just smiled and said he needed to go clean out his shorts! And (2) my inverted landing [:I]. I was flying the pattern inverted and I was going to fly real low on this pass - the problem is my engine sputtered and died when I was about 2 feet off the ground and it just plopped in! No damage whatsover! Not even a scratch!!! It does help that I came down about five feet from the runway on the grass! Whew!

Both planes fly very well - but I am a bit biased when I say that the SPADStick is one of the best SPAD airplanes I have ever built/flown.

Thanks for a great day of flying Dean!

You missed a criterion:

Which is the Faster/Easier build.

The DPS is easier to build, and therefore makes is a faster build. I had the DPS done in about 3 hours and stickered up and ready to fly in 4. Kraut said yesterday the SpadStick took somewhere between an hour or two longer due to the coro fuselage and decking it out with the scalloped control surfaces.

Dean's is definately easier to build - but that doesn't mean that the SPADStick is by any means hard to build! Dean's DPS is the ultimate in simple designs - but I wanted a plane that actually looked very much like a "Stick" type plane - hence the SPADStick! I wanted a plane with a longer fuselage - and you simply can't do that with the PVC materials - too heavy - so I opted for the Coroplast fuselage instead - besides - it is already colored!!!!!
