ORIGINAL: Bandit44 Ok besides the fact that you need to use the Walkera radio. How does this little bird fly.

What a pain, I have answered this once and added some pics but god knows where they went and after searching for them I lost my answer, which went like this.
This is a tough bird to fly but 5 times better than a Dexterity. When mine arrived the cyclic stick (mine's on the right) on the Radio was stoved in. There was not a mark on the box or packaging so I am sure it happened at the factory. Someone has whacked it or dropped it on the stick. I whipped off the back to find the little retaining plate that holds the stick's pivot pin was bent and the pivot pin had come adrift. Straightened the plate, popped the pivot pin back and replaced the plate. Seems fine now but how I wish they would not force us to have to use their radios without making lots of changes. Now my 22E flew itself out of the box but this one has a throttle/collective stick that isn't progressive. The heli is either suddenly in the air or suddenly on the ground. If it had a graphic display i could set it up to my liking but this fiddling with dip switches is not only ancient but disappointing. So for the while mine is in the box. I know it will fly but I know it will need working on first. It just needs the pitch settings altering. Boring.

This is what I was saying in my earlier post, I'm sure with a good Tx this thing will be quite flyable but at the moment I have the same problem, its too aggressive and just leaps into the air. Need a replacement for the walkera 4-in-1 so a good Tx could be used with it.

OK I got it and I can't get a hover out of it.The tail just goes counterclockwise when she lifts off.I can't seem to control it.Any input on why the tail is out of control will help me.I'm getting frustrated with it's stock setup. Also the servos chatter quite a bit. They can't seem to find the way back to center and they just chatter away.I have recieved the Blue arrow 3 in 1 and the reciever. Now I'm waiting for the servos.Once the servos arrive I'm taking all the walkera electronics out of it.For now I'd like to figure out why I can't control the tail.My guess is something is defective.I tried adjusting the rudder mix to full and lock mode on the gyro.I tried mix down low and lock on the gyro.I tried a bunch of different settings. When I throttle up and twist the heli to the left the tail motor throttles up and leads me to beleive the gyro is functioning properly.

I have just spent an afternoon modifying the Walkera 52. It has trememdous balance issues. The tail was like it was attached to the floor. I could get it to pivot around the tail vertical fin. I decided to put a load on the front to see the effect, a long heavy (comparatively) bolt. It was a great improvement and as a result I was getting a count of three in the air so I decided to dismantle the little bugger and re-site the battery way up front. Lots of things weren't right, the motor pinion wasn't parallel to the mainshaft. Screws were loose etc. so the tailboom was not pointing upwards like it should. I shortened the tail boom by sliding it forward so as to reduce the aft weight effect. Anyway, stuck it back together with the battery slung temporarily on the front of the undercarriage. Balance now a lot better, almost dead right. With the canopy on I think it'll be purfec. I put her in the air and BINGO, about a count of 10 straight off. However, after a few minutes the battery was low so end of fun 'til I recharge. The conclusion, weight balance critical. Needs a battery tray mounted up front under the canopy.
To be honest, this now flies as well as a hoverfly.

I got the tail stabilized.I moved the 4 in 1 to a different position and that seemed to cure the tail problem.Since the tail has been going wild since I got it the blades are in bad shape.I was able to get her up for a 3 count and then batterie died.I'm charging it now.Seemed like she was pretty stable for the few seconds it was up.I also took it apart and gave an extra turn on all the lose screws .Pushed the boom in and temporarily hung the batterie up half under the 4 in 1 and half under the skids. There was a lot of loose screws.I need blades.

Has anyone had problems with the battery for the Walkera #52. I just got mine and it will only hover for about 15 sec before it losses power and I have to recharge wich only takes about 5 minutes before it says it if done. For the most part I like the little bird but the flight time of 15 sec has me bit upset.

Have finally got the ship to fly right - still a handful but is now in the air. Main thing I did after moving the battery was to get all outputs to 90° and all surfaces at zero at midstick. Finally the next main task was to (re)set the pitch and the throttle curve. In doing this I broke my first blades. In my book this is where knowing what you want the heli to perform like makes this task possible - I can see if it needs more pitch or juice etc. from experience - and is where a beginner would probably be most at sea with this heli. This is what makes all the difference. Plus which by now I am starting to learn to fly it. All this done I was able to check blade tracking (while light on the floor!!!) and correct as necessary. Now I can hover it within a 6 foot square, it still isn't easy but I have to admit, I set the throttle/collective/rudder stick to get lift off and then, unbelievably, more or less, leave it alone and concentrate on cyclic. Yes, it will hold it's heading lock solid and it's height pretty well unattended. It has gone from a pig bouncing up and down to a real flying machine. However, it will be a cold day in hell before I can fling it around the room. It needs a 20 foot square room for that. I really think this heli is not for the faint hearted.

Hey guys, well I've had my 52 for about three weeks, and I am pretty much satified with it. I am getting about 10min flight out of it. I have had no problems with the stock batery, I think the chargers that come with them are junk though. The stock charger takes about 15min to charge and my electifly charger set at 300 takes 45 mins and I get a lot longer flights out of it. A good batery is the 3 cell 300mha "20" from hobby lobby.
This is my second walkera heli and both of them have no problems with the electronics, go figure. My servos do chatter a little though.
I am not pleased with how fragile certin parts are. I started on a walkera #4 which you can almost fly straight into the ground with hardly any damage.
I have gone through 2 sets of blades, flybar, main motor and landing gear.
To solve the balance problem, I use velcro to hold the batery under the receiver/gyro. I completely removed the battery holder.
I also drilled out the tail motor and tail boom clamp to fit 4mm (I think) carbon fiber tube so I don't have to pay 10 buck everytime I break one.
All in all not a bad little chopper, it is a little twitchy but is pretty easy to controle.

I forgot to ask, where is everyone getting spare parts? I bought the heli and the first round of extra parts through rc-fever.com but I hate the long wait for the shipping from HK.

I get my 52 spares from these people:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Walkera-Dragonfly-52-7CH-RC-Helicopter-Radio-Control-NR_W0QQitemZ6065821369QQcategoryZ123847QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
No problems.

I find the lack of image posting facility in this forum to be a real pain.

I hope to finally get my 52 out of it's box this weekend. Bought it a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to even look at it yet. I imagine I'll spend a few hours trying to get it set-up before attempting to get it in the air....only to crash it I bet
