I just got my Edge and have started construction. When I look at the firewall I do not see any right incidence. it appears to be square with no right thrust. Has anyone had a left thrust problem flying this aircraft? If so how did you fix it??? ( washers behind the motor mount.)
This is a very good looking ARF. The covering is perfect, as usual with Hanger-9 and newer Seagull products.
The 2.4" foam wheels are a bit small and skimpy so I've replaced then with 2 3/4" Rubber. Just need to enlarge wheel pants opening.
I cant waite till my Futaba S3010 servos to arrive so I can fire up the Saito 125 and fly this baby.

I have to disagree on the aileron servos. I believe they are installed correctly at the factory and do go toward the leading edge but toward the root of the wing not the tip. This centers the clevis on the reinforced wood part of the aileron. If they are mounted toward the tip the clevis is installed at the edge of this reinforced area. I am sure I want mine in the strongest part of the aileron.

Hello Tom,

Sounds like our Edge 540s are going to be similar since I also installed a Saito 125, and used Futaba 3010 servos (but I opted for a 3305 on the rudder).

I just followed the manual. The pictures and steps describe the right wing aileron servo installation. If you look closely you can tell (see pages 8 and 10).

Yes, it ends up near the edge of the solid piece, but still mounted securely.

Your way should work also (maybe better ... who knows ... but I have a feeling we are going to find out :-) What your saying makes sence, and might over-ride my attempt to follow the manual closely and also get them closer to the middle. Maybe the manual is wrong.

Actually, mine were factory installed with the cut-outs closest to the ailerons (which is definitely wrong).

The plane flies great. I have 3 flights on mine so far.

FlashingRed,

I'm using a Futaba 6EXA-S.

There are some mixing options, but try as I did, it wouldn't mix properly on separate channels. It came close, but not completely.

The Futaba SR10 Dual Servo Reverser seems to be working good for me so far. Since it comes with all the long cables you will need (without additional extensions), the price actually turns out to be very resonable.

A simple Y cable works on the ailerons, but not the elevators.

I want to thank you for your excellent building log. It's been a great help. Did you mount your Saito 125 as designed or did you add some right thrust to the mount???? If not how does it fly???? Does it need it??

Did you have a large enough air escape in the bottom of your cowl???

I will have mine ready to fly next weekend. I didn't order the servos until I received the plane. I should have then by Tuesday.

I am also going to put 2 fore & aft 4" red stripes on the bottom of each wing for visibility. The white bottom concerns me in overcast conditions. Especially since I lost a Venus last week in the sky.

Thanks, Tom

You are welcome. I'm glad it helped you.

Did you mount your Saito 125 as designed or did you add some right thrust to the mount????

As designed. I'm not sure if it's the factory built firewall angle or the motor mount, but it did seem to ended up with 1 degree of right thrust (which I think is about right).

I swapped out the included motor mount screws for 8-32 hex cap heads, washers, and metal nuts with nylon inserts. Then, I used these left over longer M4x30 screws for motor mount to firewall, so they stick out the back a 1/4" or so. Then attach M4 metal nuts with nylon inserts to lock up against the pre-installed M4 blind nuts. I also installed 2 braces behind the firewall (I'll try to add the pics to my website soon).

If not how does it fly???? Does it need it??

It flies great. Even under full throttle and/or going vertical, my plane does NOT pull left.

Did you have a large enough air escape in the bottom of your cowl???

Yes, I think so. I tried to cut the cowl as little as possible and positioned the muffler 2/3 exposed on the bottom and I think that helps. Here in the Texas summer, at 1:00pm it's often near or over 100 degrees, so overheating issues should show up (if there are any) but after 3 flights, I haven't yet, so I think it's ok.

I will have mine ready to fly next weekend. I didn't order the servos until I received the plane. I should have then by Tuesday.

I was concidering something similar, but haven't yet (one guy in another thread did wide black stripes on the bottom). However, I was glad to see (while flying it) that the white bottom is a nice contrast to the mostly red wing top.

Thanks, Tom

Vince,

I just talked to Horizon Support.

They said:"if the firewall needed incidence it would have been added after they test flew the model".
( I'll be interested in hearing your flight observations)
They said:" the aileron servo is mounted with the arm inboard so the horn is in the strongest part of the aileron."

They were great about answering questions.

Tom

What replacement landing gear works well on this plane?

I already installed Dubro 3" rubber wheels, and they help a little, but the stock gear seems pretty soft. I'm looking for something affordable but better.

Ideally, I think it should flex some to absorb the landing shock, but then return to it's original shape.

Interesting.

Ok, well then they need to correct and reprint the manuals or at least include a corrected addendum in the box.

See image
I had to enlarge the slot by 2x 1/8" and the servo mounts didn't lineup so the control rods have a different length.

mstam,

Oh yes, I saw your personal build page the other day, but didn't catch the CF gear.

So the "GraphTech #114 Aero Works 25% Edge 540" looks like a good match ... very nice.

If you don't mind, a few more questions?

What diameter are those wheels, what size is that prop., and how much clearance is between the prop. and ground?

I think you see where I'm going with this ... I haven't chipped a prop. yet and hope to keep it that way :-)

The engine is a Saito 100, prop APC 16x4W, clearance about 2" when plane is horizontal, so a 17" prop will work fine.
Rec prop sizes:

Saito 100 15-20% APC 15x4W up to 15x6. 16x4W on 30% with Perry VP-20 pump.

Saito 125 15-20% APC 16x4W (10k rpm). 17x4W or 16x6 on 30% fuel.
