Wydah , I plan on useing flite skin on mine , I just did this on a Seafury and the flitetskin is so thin , warp resistant , and when you add ribs its as strong as carbon fiber .

I am very curious on the hindge set up , did you add an internal crossbrace in the wing so that the hinges had a place to catch ?

Again , thanks for the answers you did a great job

I glued 3x10 mm hard balsa under the edge of the wing between the ribs and cut a hinge slot diagonally down so that the hinge point ended up at the skin. The flaps are built up 2 mm balsa with 3 mm ribs and a 3x12 mm leading edge beam. I used 2 mm balsa between the ribs to make a box structure in the forward 1/2 so they're pretty stiff and very light. I used three heavy duty pinned Du-Bro hinges on each flap.

Not much progress. The flaps are connected to the servos and operate nicely, I also cut out the cockpit sides and made balsa ledges and a cardboard instrument panel shield. Then I mixed some paint and brushed it on. I'm not going for scale perfection, just a plane that looks right to me. Eventually I'd like to recover and paint the plane in a grey/green british scheme.

I ordered parts to make my own belt reduction-drive to drive the big Soloprop so that will be interesting.

My homemade reduction belt drive. It will be mounted on 15 mm rubber vibration dampers, hence the raised lugs.

It is quite serious looking.

The gear ratio reduces the prop RPM at 1300 W to 4160 rpm, so I shoul dbe able to spin the 20" three-blade. I have pinions to achieve a slightly lower and slightly higher gear ratio as well.

Hehe. I only fly electric.

I have an ESM (KMP) Spitfire that I have converted to electric. The P-40 should be lighter than the Spit:

The reduction drive fits in the nose perfectly. The motor is conveniently positioned behind the intake on top of the nose so cooling should be good. I may have to add some fibreglass around the box.

The motor and gear reduction unit looks great! I have never flown electric, but after seeing and hearing the video of your Spit, I am inspired!

Any chance you could post templates and a parts list for the power unit???

If I were to build another belt drive I would choose smaller pulleys to save weight, maybe try plastic pulleys instead, and make the assembly a little smaller. I made it tall and used a long belt to get the motor positioned by the air intake. I used big pulleys to make sure lots of teeth were engaging but the pulleys are heavier than I thought they would be.

http://www.sdp-si.com/

Parts:
Shaft: S40PX0MHG6M-100
Belt: A 6R53M067060
Pulley: A 6A53M028DF0606
Pulley: A 6A53M045DF0606
6x12x4 mm ball bearings.

Here's a CAD drawing of the parts: http://www.enrarot.net/images/belt01.zip

Later I might make a counter-rotation gearbox for my Spitfire using both gears and belt reduction.

THANKS FOR SHARING!

Sorry to take so long to thank you. I looks really innovative and I plan on doing the research this weekend.... I am having a problem opening the CAD drawings, I can't seem to figure out what opens a DXF file! Can this be converted to Adobe or something common?

I noticed a lot of you guys are not using the spinner that came with the kit. Is anyone interested in selling one of them?
