The Six Day Hots didn't last very long. As I mentioned in the "beater" thread, this is the plane that I do stupid stuff with. Well I got stupid again. I was doing low point rolls and my brain froze up in the middle of one. The Six Day Hots was splattered across the field. I'd said that I thought I could scratch build one in a good three day weekend. I was wrong.

I had a 4 day holiday for Memorial Day. I splattered the Six Day Hots on Friday Morning, went to the hobby shop for balsa then stopped by the office. I was home a little after 2 PM and started cutting the kit from the original MAN plans. Friday night I had the wing completed. Saturday afternoon and evening I completed the plane and covered it. Sunday morning I installed the controls and it was ready to fly by Sunday afternoon.

So I'm calling this one the 48 Hour Hots!

To be honest, it wasn't completely from scratch. The tail feathers and pushrods were used in both of my previous Hots' and the firewall was from #2. Like I couldn't have made those Saturday morning.

Cheap, fast building, flies like a bandit. What more could you want?

Show us your Hots!

Dave

So does the 6 turn into a 9 when you fly inverted?

Mine took a lot longer to complete, but I am not a fast builder. I love the way they fly and I have a Midwest Super Hots kit waiting its turn to build. Here is a pic of my SH60. Alas, it was ill fated, but not at the field or in the air. It rolled out of the back of the truck on the way to the field and broke at the leading edge of the wing. Yes, I had a brain f@%& and forgot to close the tailgate with not restraint on the landing gear.

I have been working on this one on and off for some time now ... dimensions are almost identical to a Super Hots, but it should look a lot better eventually. How do you like it all?

In the mean time, the positives are all painted, and ready to be pulled a mold from.

niceguy,

The wing tips are a simple affair. The only thing I do different from the plans is to use balsa a little thicker than shown for the tip. Once built the 1/16" is enough but I find it easier to build with 1/8". I don't break as many while building.

Once the wing is built, cut the sheeting and spars even with the tip rib, then sand flush. The wing tip is glued to the center of the tip rib. Then bevel pieces of 1/4" square balsa to go from the end of the spar to the wing tip. You can use spruce but why bother.

Glue balsa blocks to rib and wing tip at leading and trailing edges. Don't carve them down until after the next step.

The only tricky part is the sheeting. Cut it a little oversize and use a sanding block to bevel to fit. Doesn't have to be perfect, that's what balsa filler is for.

Now carve/sand the blocks down.

Just hung up your trainer? Be careful, it's named The Hots for a reason! I wouldn't recommend it as a second plane. Maybe a third if you don't over power it the way I do.

Dave

Derrick,

There's no bill of materials listed either on the plans or in the construction article. The plane is mostly 1/16" balsa, 3/16" for the tail surfaces (I think), and ply as listed on the plans.

They're not shown on the plans but note the ply doublers that Matt added. Don't leave them out or you'll be sorry! Be sure to adjust other pieces as needed. Like don't cut the hatch and bottom ply pieces until after you've got the fuse framed.

Matt, I like your doublers better than mine. I'll use that approach on my next one.

Oh yeah, the fuselage sides are 1/8" balsa.

So that's lots of 1/16" balsa (10 - 12 sheets I think), probably 4 sheets of 1/8", enough 3/32" for the tail surfaces and ply as called for. Again, don't forget to add ply fuselage doublers, 1/16" or 3/32 should be fine.

There's also the two 1/4" square x 48" long spruce spars, I think 1/4" square balsa for the TE, something like 1/2" x 1" for the LE (I rip my own from 1/2" sheet), some 1/8" square and some triangle stock. Oh, and aileron stock.

Could be some other stuff too. I'm doing this from memory (but I have built 5 of them in the last year and a half!) Be sure to go over the plans well for anything I missed. Get extra 1/16" sheeting, this is where you might screw up and need more. For ply, you'll need a little 1/4", some 3/32", some 1/32" and what ever you decide on doublers. I used 3/32" because I had it but 1/16" should be fine.

Don't bother buying at your local hobby shop. Place an order with Lone Star Balsa and get enough for at least 2. It'll cost you less than the wood for one locally and you're going to want another anyway. Get lots of spare balsa, in every dimension you order. It won't go bad and I hate paying hobby shop prices.

You're going to LOVE this plane!

Dave
