It has been a while since I posted to this forum, but there's a thing that keeps me busy.

I planned to build a jr Falcon for a while (thanks for the plans Dave Fritzke and Gene Rock!!) for some lazy diesel flying.
Is the PAW 55 (0.033 cu in) powerful enough for this plane (lightweight radio setup, selectec wood, lightweight covering etc.) or do I have to scale down the plans?

Or should I go for the bigger PAW049 or even the PAW06 (both the same weight) and build the plane the original size?

It would be perfect. Figure the 033 to be the same power as a good reed valve 049. Fly a JR falcon just fine, if not too heavy. GREAT engine.
The 061 is identical in dimensions to the 049 paw, might as well get the larger one.

The 061 is cuter, smaller, and nicer than the larger ones, go for it.

Thanks for the input EASYTIGER.

I already found out that the PAW 55 is a fine engine. It throttles down very well and is an easy starter (after running in..).
The engine is now on a semi-scale Little Gem midget racer which flies well but needs to be re-engineered (this might be a new thread in the future).
In the mean time I wanted to use it on another plane.

Power will be a non-issue...I put hundreds of flights on a Livewire Kitten, of very similar dimensions to a Jr Falcon, it would loop all day long and do silly maneuvers, or throttle back and putt along, all up to you!

I am almost finished with the fuselage and the tail and the wing is ready except for the trailing edge.
I can't decide if I want to put in ailerons (and remove lots of dihedral) or not. If yes, what size for the ailerons etcetera.....

The green PAW is also looking at me all the time. It says: "take me instead of the little one. I'm a little heavier but also a lot stronger."

I feel very, very for thinking all of this but it just doesn't stop

My vote would be to stick with rudder and elevator, but that stems from my love of keeping things simple on small models. I fly a Jr Falcon on 2 channel with a TeeDee .049 and tank mount. It has MORE than sufficient power, in fact it is not what you would call relaxed but quite sprightly. With a lightly built example on a small diesel, it sounds like R/E heaven to me. But heck, ailerons would be fun I guess. IMHO 5/8" - 3/4" wide is plenty, and spanwise I would run them as typical strip ailerons, out just a hair from the fuselage (1/2"?) and stop just short of the tip.

I have thermalled mine several times, and I would not call it overly light. Should weigh it sometime.

MJD

p.s. (edit) if you're gonna put the big one on it, then my vote officially changes to ailerons as first choice over R/E

I say keep the small engine and no ailerons, then build another one for the bigger engine, take out the dihedral and put on the ailerons. Then you can do a comparison between the two and let us know how they perform......

I second that. The PAW .03 should fly the Jr. Falcon in a manner similar to the reed .049. I put a PAW .049 TBR in a Jr. Falcon and wound up flying it at about half throttle most of the time. Now it's racked on the wall waiting for a new wing with no dihedral and strip ailerons. Someday...

I remembered I now own a scale, so I weighed the Jr Falcon last night - 17.9 oz less fuel. Not as light as I would like a 1/2A to be, but it has mini servos and a standard Rx. The rest is airframe pork - but I have no complaints about it's flying ability, it's a fun little fellow. By contrast my unnamed original 30" span Hershey Bar wing aerobatic Stik-ish thing (a name would be simpler and quicker wouldn't it?) weighs 11oz less fuel, and flies up a freakin' storm on a good Black Widow with 25% nitro and a 5-3 MAS. I'd love to build an 11- 12oz Jr Falcon, I am sure it could be done without too much trouble.

Well, this is the result. I bolted the bigger engine on the plane. Still no maiden but the engine runs really fine.

The only thing that's missing is the bird on the tail. Still got to figure out how to do that.

Wow! Beautiful job supagloo!

If you can find some decal paper I can email you the Jr. Falcon emblems I made in Photoshop. They're not exact replicas, but close enough that no one will know the difference.

Here are the ones I used on the Falcons that I built. Scanned from an old magazine and cleaned up.

Your decals are far better than the originals on my Jr Falcon. They are pretty smudgy but, hey the plane is about 35 years old. Also a photo of the product engine modified for crankcase pressure. It wouldn’t hold a needle setting for the duration of a 1 oz tank without it. Pressure cured it. It is (was) R/O, but converted from the original GG to a single proportional servo. Other than a hole in the top of the wing (hanger rash) it looks the same as the last time it flew. Might have to fix it up and get the old gal back in the air. It was a great flyer and had a nice flat glide.
Al

Edit: OOPS, forgot the photos.

Good thig you went with the .061 PAW. I get 13,800 to 14,000 on a 7x3 MAS prop on mine.

The PAW 55 gives about 13,500+ on a 6x3.5 MAS- way less thrust.

Treven.
