Anyone know of servo controllers other than the UNAV PDC10? It's the last piece I need for a GPS controllled a/c and at $199 is a bit pricey.

WSMalley,

I am not sure where you can buy a unit for less than that amount. The price does not seem really steep for that sort of controller as it probably is not a hot item for manufacturers--in other words, the less the demand the higher the individual price, I would imagine.

Guess I am not much help, but I would like to know about your system. What components do you have for your plane? Also costs, etc. Could you post some detailed pics of your setup? I have dreamed of building a GPS controlled plane for some time now and have just built a couple of "large enough" aircraft to carry most any reasonable payload that the system would comprise. There is a company located in Canada who manufactures a complete UAV system with all the "bells and whistles", but it ain't cheap! Can't remember the name of the co. at the moment though.

Anyhow, thanks for any info you will provide on your project. I know you are having fun planning, building, and testing it.

Sam

Let me see if I can give a quick and dirty overview. For a simplistic system, you need a device to hold altitude and level flight. I am 'loading' my first attempt into a Cub and using a BTA-06 autopilot as the wing leveler/altitude component. I have a small Supercircuits video cam, and a 100mw 2.4gHz videoTx/Rx from BlackWidowAV, and a BlackBoxCamera video display overlay(VDO) the vdo displays altitude, speed, direction etc. from your GPS. For that, I'm using a Garmin GP12, with pc cable. A Magellan or Garmin eTrex will work but your Gps needs the PC connection capability. Then of course you need the PDC10 or equivalent to translate the GPS waypoints you program in to corrections into the rudder servo which flies the course you select. I believe a Futaba PA1 or PA2, or a FMA Co-pilot would work as well for your wing leveler/altitude hold. Hope this helps. Bill S.

Keep in mind to fly a UAV with video equipment, you need to have a Ham license. I am studying to get mine, you can get the book from the ARRL-they have a web site. I believe any of the video Tx/Rx that would work will require a license! If your electronics minded, I've bult a couple of GPS receivers from OEM boards you can buy on the net- they downside is they would only give you a display of speed, altitude direction, which can be fun, but you can't program waypoints. We can get real esoteric and if you start wanting to do long distance stuff, antennaes become difficult. Go to 'RC-Cam' site and you can see what others are doing. This kind of a can of worms in that the AMA has expressed concerns about this type of flying-see Presidents comments a few months back. I would estimate cost at average of $150 per component.

You can look at my link page, but I don't think there is anything of lower cost.
