I'm building a DPS and want it to be a tail dragger, any one see any problems with that setup?
How far in front of the CG should I mount the landing gear?
Does it need a steerable tail wheel or is the rudder sufficient.

I've built 2 or 3, all tail draggers, and they work just fine. Be sure to put a little toe in on the wheels, they track much better that way.

The axle should be in line with the leading edge of the wing, with the plane in level flight attitude.

Here's how i make my steerable tailskid.
If you fly off grass, its perfect, on pavement, i think a wheel might be a little less annoying, soundwise.

Thanks for the info.
Using a pavement runway, a wheel will be used.
Is that a flying wire or the antenna, from the stab up to the fin?

flying wire. If i suspect that the tail might flutter, i tie it off. Its nothing more than 30 lb nylon fishing line.

You'll love a tailwheel DPS. You'll save a few ounces, and completely eliminate the aggravation of constantly fixing nose wheels. The plane takes off perfectly straight, no problems of ground looping at all. (Why did I wait so long?)

Here's how I do it. I buy the .40 size DuBro tail wheel set (a couple of bucks). It includes a 3/4" wheel, a black plastic bracket, and a piece of wire and some washers which I throw away.

I screw the bracket onto the bottom of the fuse, so the hole lines up perfectly with the rudder hinge. Then I take .062 piano wire. Above the horiz stab, the wire goes straight up, and then bends 90 degrees. I sharpen it a little, and push it into the rudder, across the flutes. (It looks exactly like ChrisSpad's picture above.) Below, the stab, I bend it back a little, and two more bends hold the wheel in place.

This photo, not the best, shows the bottom part. You could save a few cents by making a bracket yourself out of 1/4" square hardwood. You might be able to get away without the bracket at all, in which case, the setup would look exactly like ChrisSpad's, but with a wheel.

Thanks everyone.
Wish I had found this website sooner, you guys are a great help, saves me and everyone like me I'm sure, lots and time and frustration learning a new building skill.
Hope to meet you all at some Spadfest someday.
