Thank you one and all for sharing your experiences on ariel photography with me. I will abandon any further attempt at using helium blimps and now my search is for a source for a telecoping pole rig that I can mount to my van. I have seen some construction articles, but before I resort to hacking one out, with hand tools in my garage, I will first explore the commercially available products. The telescoping pole system will more than adequately support any camera equipment required and be far more reliable than a helium blimp. I think I will need at least a fifty foot capability. Any home made construction articles, other than the ones already posted, are also welcome. Thanks for your help, and thanks RC Universe for this valued forum.

Howdy, Captain!

I just sold mine this year to an operator in California. I know of a person in Tucson who has one but probably isn't willing to let it go...I know of an operator in Florida who has a spare that he may be willing to part with...however, I know what parts are necessary and where to get them. Because of my experience with a pneumatic unit, I am partial to them...

You can spend >$15K on a 50' unit. You can build one for <$4K, and that's with wireless (important, as you don't want your cord getting walked on, etc.). Have you established a budget? What sort of gear (camera and lenses) do you intend to fit? This is an important question as the pod unit I recommend has a "limit" of 2.2KG on the head load (I overburdened mine).

Get ahold of me on the private line ( lgeis@idahoairships.com ) if you'd like my "parts list." I do not sell the pods or the parts, I'm just a "user."

Leo

Radio Shack used to have a telescoping mast. I don't know if it will go up 50' though. Don't think it will, but should go up about 30' if that will help you out any.

Just out of curiosity, what are you using it for, anyway?

Just my $.02

Bob

Check out:

http://www.bird-shots.com/how_to/pap/pap.htm

This is my friend David McGeachy's site. He is retiring soon, and could be talked into building you a rig, for a lot less than $5000 (he needs the $).

From his site, here are the materials costs:

56' * (8 Sections) $262.72
50' * (7 Sections) $199.44
44' * (6 Sections) $142.30

You will have to talk to him about labor.
