My question is ;Why has the Zlin been put aside by most manufacturers? although it has woderful flying capabilities that permitted it to wine so many world championships in the 60s and 70s. anybody has an idea?
thanks pals

No Lie, I am guessing because people got bored with it. I finally found a Circus Hobbies Zlin kit. It was the best flying plane. Will have to copy it and build 2 when I build it. Sure miss them.

Have the plans of a small .10 size Zlin
as well as a bigger .60 size, was studying them
for scratch building!

a while back MAN had plans for it which I purchased. span 83" Laser 120 for power. Now I need to find time to build it.

Dick Hanson from Colorado Kits a very nice zlin. I have flown a couple of his planes, and they were two of the nicest flying planes I have ever flown.

here is his web page

I have two of the old Sig Zlin kits. I would think that sig would kit them again if there was enough interest. I personally knew nothing about the zlin but was intrigued when I saw that odd shaped plane with the goofy retracts.
The kit magazines have too many Extras, Caps, Edges, Studachers...they all look pretty much the same anyway don't they? Occasional Sukhois and a few Zlins make for interesting diversions.

zlin50ls -> RE: zlin forgotten (1/10/2004 2:45:28 PM)

Hi Guys. I agree with you, the Zlin 526 and Zlin 50 aircraft are great looking airplanes. Even though they are different than the Extra, Cap and Sukhoi aerobatic models, that's what makes them so unique. Here is the list of past and present Zlin RC models that I know about: Mk Zlin 50-.60, Pilot Zlin 526-.20, IM Products Zlin 50-.45, Ohio RC Zlin 50-.90, Sig Zlin 526-.60. Present models: Esprit Models Zlin 50-.60, Graupner Zlin 50-Speed 400. If you guys know of any more import kits that I didn't cover, let me know. Thanks, Kurt.

JWN -> RE: zlin forgotten (1/10/2004 3:05:37 PM)

My guess would be that as newer full scale aerobats came on to the scene, interest in the Zlin's waned to the point that they weren't viable from a business standpoint. I had a Pilot Zlin. It was a smooth flyer, but had too much dihedral in stock form. It would roll almost as well with rudder as it would with ailerons. I sold it after 6 flights for this very reason. If I ever get another, I'll cut the dihedral to about 1/3 of stock. OTOH, I've had my eyes on Dick Hanson's kit for a long time :)

[:-] I really like the lines on the Zlin 50... and a kit the size i wanted wasnt available so i just scaled up a three view off the net, drew my own plans up and built one. 57.5" WS , 575 SQ IN, 5.3 LBS. I have one of those new Saito 82 FS in it and am anxious to fly it (Still need to vacu-form canopy) Older pics of it are on another Zlin thread, will post new pics when I get the canopy finished and installed....

lazylazerflyer -> RE: zlin forgotten (7/24/2004 12:10:36 AM)

hey joe
this is A.D.
ya your zlin looks great its really going to haul with the saito 82, has Dan made the canopy yet? When do you plan to fly it?
A.D.

ifixairplanes -> RE: zlin forgotten (7/24/2004 12:51:39 AM)

I have a zlin 142 here where i work (full scale). awkward plane to wrench on. everything is metric, so if i strip a cowl screw or something we have to order it. The engine, which is an inverted straight six with a supercharger, turns the wrong way! (counter clockwise from pilots seat instead of clockwise). That means left rudder on takeoff and stuff. but still, its a fairly sharp looking plane. if anyone is interested in pics i can get some.

<<I would think that Sig would kit them again if there was enough interest.>>

It would take a LOT of interest. I spoke to them about that very thing the other day; specifically, the Kommander and SkyBolt. The guy said the new owners are really not into nostalgia, and once a kit has been dropped, its gone for good.

What a shame...

Hisham -> RE: zlin forgotten (7/24/2004 5:07:56 PM)

Yeah ur right Steve
I have an old Bonnaza kit that I was working some time ago....
Another cool kit, have the plans of the Zlin from Sig as well
was planning to scratch them......maybe in the winter
