In that case you need to go with the most popular model at your club, in your price bracket.

If, like many UK Clubs, there are a number of IOM and Marbleheads then it makes sense to try and pick a secondhand one of these up, although in the IOM case this is harder than it sounds.

What are the popular yachts at your club?

I went a different way as there was no existing fleet where I sail, so I bought a Micro Magic and pretty quickly others followed as at around £120 on the water complete with radio gear it was tempting enough for other club members, plus they can get them in the car fully rigged.

Sailing at any club where there is only one or two of the same class can get pretty boring, especially when they don't turn up but get numbers up up around 5 or more and it becomes a different story.

I have a couple of freinds who bought Seawinds and they both have their boat as a display in their office and rarely if ever sail them.
They look good and in isolation they sail well but unless there are other Seawinds at your club I think you might get bored quite quickly.

IMHO

why would you build one from pine? its way too heavy you use balsa wood, pine is ok for a large scale model like a schooner but not for a raceing yaght.balsa is cheap less than £1 a sheet 4" by 1/8" x 36" long i used exactly 3 sheets to build that hull.i used a fishing rod blank(carbon) for the mast.you can also use arrow shafts which are cheap.like i said £50 to build the hull pluss servo.you wont get a boat for £200 of the same quality as one you can build yourself for the same money or indeed less.i built mine from 1/8 balsa sheet cut into 1/4 planks with a sharp modeling knife and a straight edge.then i sanded it and covered it in 120g cloth the kind used on airplane wings.it cost me £3 polyester resin was £7.its strong and very lite and better than most rts hulls you will find under £400 in my opinion.i couldnt be happier with my boat she sails well in all kinds of wind and shes pretty fast and very manouvarable too.also the plans are free ,there are also free instructions on how its done on the linked site look at the us one mtr boat build instructions download parts one to four for free.http://www.modelyacht.org/us1mcons.html

Another low-cost boat, with a world-wide following is the Victoria:

From all accounts, it sails pretty well as supplied but there are many sites with advice for getting even better performance, e.g.

Fonzzy the sea winds are bueatiful and sail like a dream. Building one is half the fun. The only thing I'd ask about sailing at your clubs lake is if it has alot of lillys or grass that the keel bulb will catch on. If not then you'll have a great time with your boat at the lake. If the lake is full of these obsticals your boat will be slowed down considebly. There are other models where the bulb is set back or the the keel is more heavly weighted like some of the victor models.

How's it going Hummingbird. I believe alot in what LtDoc said about getting a boat that you like over anything else. Because if it's not fun to play with you wont be sailing very long. If you build you own boat you will have a stronger bond to it then if you just bought it at the hobby shop and snapped it together. Although I saw at the CR-914 class yahoo group Geoff Becker is selling one of his boats. Anyone reading this act fast cause I'm sure it wont be on sale for very long. (email Geoff for info etc. at becker1022 [at] aol.com he put it up for sale Tuesday 26)
Learning to sail is not that complected. At the AMYA site there is a button near the top of the web site called About Sailing which has lots of hints and advice. Not like rc planes, helis and cars where if they get out of control the model can be crashed or someone hit by a run away sail boats are very forgiving. At worst I've done on my learning to sail is scratching the paint. The best I've been told on how to adjust the sails to the wind is imagine that they are a planes wings. You want the wind to run over the surface of the main sail. The Jib sail helps direct the flow of the wind like the slats on the forward edge of a passenger jets wing. Next time you're on a passenger jet and can see the wings during take off or landing notice the slates on the forward edge of the wings extend forward to increase the air flow over the wing. It's rare that you have the wind behind your boat in the direction you want to go. But its fun to see your boat hall ass across the lake with the sails all out. Too bad theres no easy way to put a spinnaker on a rc sail boat. I know with the instructions of the North Winds I got at the very back it has diagrams of how to adjust your sails to the winds direction and the direction you want the boat to go. The North Wind yahoo group has the instructions in a zip file form that you can pick up there or I can email you the file if you are interested.
Not sure about the fishing poles. What where they using them for Hummingbird? The San Louis Obispo chapter has a pool cleaning pole with a hook that they use to put their boats in and out of the lake. Hopefully the weather will be good on Saturday down there cause it looks like after reading the SD Aquanauts website that is when they sail at the park. I like both of Martno1fan's wd40's idea and the ballon idea. Will have to experiment with those.

Hi there,

Did you sort out your sail control. I have a thames barge that I built and I tried putting sail controls in but didnt like the way she sailed so I went back to rudder only.
