The Stearman, like all the other planes I review, was sold so I could get paid for writing the review, taking the photos, building the plane, buying the engine and radio equipment, etc.

That process will certainly happen with the Hellcat too, at some point in time, but not until I get the new retract servo and fly it again.

Petit,
Did you hit the retract switch when it was sitting on the ground.

Moto that is a real dumb question! Sorry but couldn't help myself.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

teryn1 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/4/2006 5:06 AM)

Made it out to the field today with the Hellcat. There are some picts below. These were taken in Green Valley, AZ by Tim Kelley.

Flight Video UPDATED: http://www.terynd.com/public/hellcat-7.9.06.wmv (37 MB WMV w/music)

MOTORMAN37 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/4/2006 6:38 AM)

When the gear is in the up or down position and the gear is locked, what force is there to strip the gear. My retracts seem to go up and down quite easy (by hand). Now if you hit the switch while it is on the ground or it is not completely locked, all the force is transmitted to the servo which has no mechanical advantage and is sure to fail.[:D]
Now whats so dumb about that.[:-]

CorsairJock -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/4/2006 10:25 AM)

I have thousands of flights on aircraft equipped with mechaical (and usually rotating) retracts, and have never encountered a servo problem involving stripped gears, so I gotta wonder what's up that also. Something must be going on: hitting swithch at the wrong time (I've even done that)? Linkage not adjusted right/ too much servo throw?

Got 2 more flights in on mine last evening: this is the best flying warbird I've ever had. This flies more like a sport plane: capable of all kinds of acrobatics and really being wrung out. Outide loops and 1/2 outside loops from inverted. tailslides (.91 can't quite hover it).
And best of all, scale flight: it looks so much like the full scale flight, especially those climbing turns and wingovers.

Tony Gag Jr. -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/4/2006 2:16 PM)

How are the retracts holding up on grass fields????

Tony

There is a huge torque load on the servo while the gear is in transit. While this may not be typical in most planes, it is an issue in this plane (poor design). The stripping is not due to inadvertant actions such as actuating the gear while on the ground. If that were the case, I wouldn't have wasted my time to bring it up here and complain about it (if it was somehting as stupid as that)...

BQuartyurcy, Here are some pictures of my tailwheel installation. How is yours coming. I just finished this today.

Hepdog -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 4:40 AM)

I did my maiden tonight and can say the gear held up just fine to one relatively high speed off feild "excursion" in the weeds. No damage to gear or cowl - just ego. Having a hard time stopping this little sucker, but that's likely set up and not airplane. Good flyer - quite docile but grooves pretty good. Took it easy so far but will start expanding the envelope soon.

hellcat 1 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 4:42 AM)

I'll try that again. They didn't upload. Doesn't look like they're going to tonight. Keep getting the same message. Will try again tomorrow

That is exactly what I am saying. I think my Top Flite Corsair with Saito .82 is faster, but my H9 Hellcat with Saito .91 is more manueverable/ easier to land/ just like the full scales.

bigplumbs -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 8:34 AM)

I am sbout to start my H9 Corsair so I hope she isnt too bad. I live in the UK and we are still waiting on our shipment of Hellcats

The guestion, how is the gear working on grass runways has been asked several times, is any one flying off grass with the Hellcat, HOW is the gear standing up?

hellcat 1 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 12:14 PM)

BQuarturcy, Finally got the pics to upload. If you have any questions Email me. I use inner Nirods to take the pull-pull lines up to the rudder servo. You have to turn former sideways and slide it up to the next former and then turn it straight and pull it back in place. The top has to sit at an angle fartherthan the bottom so that the wheel will go completly in. I used the vertical mounting screws on the unit so that it will be easy to take out and put in. I laminated the former out of 1/16 ply and 3/32 balsa

Yes I realize that. It has always worked before. It works it I use my regular E-mail. sorry I've used so many posts. Dick I'll send them to you on your email. BQuarturcy sorry. Sam

what paint is being used on the dummy engine? lexan paints? model paint?

Dakatt -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 1:53 PM)

Teryn,

Nice video. I also have the Saito 100 in mine and am just asking if you are happy with it. It looks like it's working well in the video. I haven't had my maiden yet because I am waiting for the JR 7202 to be delivered. What prop are you using? I put a 14 x 7 Master on it but it sure loooks small. Maybe a 15 would look more scale.

Speaking of scale, the book calls for a 1/8 Pilot. WAY TOO BIG! You either have to cut him down to his to his chest or cut a hole in the canopy to poke his head through. I cut the canopy. [:D]

teryn1 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 7:04 PM)

Thanks....The Saito is simply great. Perfect amount of power for this plane. I am using a 15x6 APC. That's nice to know about the pilot size. I haven't gotten one yet.

Hellcat716 -> RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF (7/5/2006 8:56 PM)

I am using the Saito 100 with a Graupner 14x7 three blade prop. I feel it is a perfect match for this plane. Flies scale with half throttle.
