So can anyone who's installed the Robostruts explain how much I need to cut off of the end of each strut???
I didn't think it would be so involved, but I had to buy a tap and die set and jb weld, and I'm ready to start
installing these, but I can't figure out how much wire to leave, and how much of the strut to cut off.
Thanks!

Had this plane for almost a year, just can't say enough good things about this bird. I had a blast flying her this weekend.

Thought someone might like to see a rebuild of a crashed Hellcat. A friend was going to trash this one and as it wasn't hurt as bad as mine was eariler and I had fixed it, I decided to give it a whirl. I had to graft the wing back together before I could get a pattern on the 2 and 1/2 ribs that were gone. I have it almost ready to put the covering back on now. Will post pictures of the finished product later next week. Here are some before and after pictures. Sam

Lookin good hellcat. Say.......I used to ride dirt bikes in Mt Vernon, at king city dirt riders cycle park.....had a nice little hillclimb there too... and we used to swim in jc lake, and catch alot of fish there, and in the area...anyway, love mt vernon....good luck with the rebuild. Hope you added light ply doublers to the wing ribs, or another suitable solution...

hello gentleman,

I am putting together my Hellcat and could use some good advice. I'm simply trying to build a good air worthy plane nothing unique. This is what is done some far...
Wing finished with a high torque JR retract servo...the stock gear appears to lock up and down....horizonal stab reinforced and recovered...saito 100 mounted at +-135 degrees from top center...have added minor epoxy to rear of firewall and other joints...

Is it necessary to open the firewall edge to cool the engine?...I live in south Florida...and is it necessary to shim the retract gear..and if so could someone kindly generally explain how to do these chores..I guess I am not mr handy man...but I can learn. Any other tips would be great. thank you in advance for your help

Getting close to being done. Have to put the markings on her.I won't be flying it as I plan to sell it. I have more planes than I can fly. It was just a challenge to see if I could make it whole again.

I dont think that you need to cut the fire wall, it is mostly for a more scale look. As far a shiming the landing gear every plane is a little differant. My plane did not need any shim but if you are flying off grass you can space the rear of the retract up wit a washer to bring your wheels alittle more foreword. I have 2 of thehellcats one stock and one that has been glassed and finished. both are great flying warbirds.

Think you're on the right track.

I did a little more epoxy/balsa re-enforcement to the firewall top then maybe you did, but it'll be strong enough I'm sure.

I went w/ two retract servos (takes a little wing cutting, but the area is covered "in-flight") at first, just felt stronger and easier to adjust. There's a pic here somewhere on this forum. I then really fell in love w/ the LADO retract system..prettty spendy by the time I added Robostruts.

Re: cooling. I ended up w/ a medium size shark smile on the lower cowl, used the plastic radial as instructed and mine's just fine (Saito91). The 100 will be nice, makes the 3 blade prop (Master Airscrew 14x7 is what I'm using) work just fine. Yah a 2 blade is more efficient...3 blade just says Warbird to me.

Shimming the retracts forward and having plenty up UP on the elevator during landing will help with the nose-in's.

Have fun.
Scott

Thanks for the pic of the cutoff point on the retract wire!

Next question, I changed my mind and am using the Aerovate 20cc gasser after seeing and holding it at the WRAM show. It's slated for delivery today,
and I'm pretty sure I want to shim the gear forward a bit, but can anyone tell me how thick are the washers you're using?
When I tried with 1 mm washers, the gear stuck out quite a bit from the wheel wells. Any input appreciated!

If you shim the back of the retracts any at all the wheels will not go all the way up into the wells. I used a pop rivet washer which was almost 1/8th of and inch. My wheels hang down but you cant tell it when it is flying and it doesn't seem to affect the trim any. I flew mine in fun scale at the Mint julip last year and had one flight score of 94.5 so if the judges don't care neither do I. If they lock in the up position you will be fine.

thats a good looking airplane, thanks for your advice...I would prefer not to cut the firewall, but it does look pretty cool..I fly off a asphalt runway most of the time..I've heard of people placing a pop rivet under the retract box as a form of shim?? I guess I'll figure it all out

Thanks for your advice. I have friends here in Sarasota who swear by the lado system...Its about 200 bucks though...this hobby is causing me to do unnatural things with money..I would like to shim the wheels forward about +-3/4 inch maybe a pop rivet or a cedar wood shim..I think I'm lazy..the retracts havn't been tested yet..if I can semi-nail the landings I hear the stock landing gear will last for a long while...over 50-60 times..I know its all subjective. I certainly appreciate everyones help.

I understand you used a pop rivet to shim your landing gear...could you explain how you did that...what size rivet and where is it located..I realize this is basic stuff..but it would certainly help me to understand. Thank you.\

Mrsand, I used a pop rivet washer. They are also called pop rivet back up plates. I was wrong about the thickness. These are a little over 1/16th of an inch thick. All you do is take the screws out holding the retracts in and slide the washers under the retract so they line up with the back hole, then put the screws back in. This props the back of the retract up or down, depends what way you have the wing turned, so that moves the wheel forward slightly. I also have a H-9 P-40 and I did the same to it. As you will see when you do this it also moves the wheel out of the well slightly as well but as I said in a earlier post it doesn't hurt anything. I normally fly off a grass field and have 70 or 80 flights on the Hellcat with the original retracts and they still work fine. You don't have to use pop rivet washers. You can use thick washers or more than one to get the gear where you want it.
Here is a picture of the repaired fuse I have been working on.

Thought I would post these pictures on how to shim the gear forward. It should be self explainatory. Note the difference in the angle of the wire and how much farther it is out of the well. You need to tighten the front screws down first to make sure the gear is tilted foward. Sam

Thanks for the pictures Hellcat 1....I clearly see the washers...seems straight forward.

By the way..is there a best way to mount a Saito 100..guess I'm a little late asking since I mounted it..I put the valve covers at +_ 135 degrees from top of fuse...zero degrees being fuse top in level flying position.

It's a little late for you to change it now. I like to mount a four stroke sideways so that the carb is at the right height in relation to the tank. You could probably invert one without cutting any holes in the cowl but the carb is way low and you will have some problems with fuel flooding the caarb unless you have some way to shut it off. I have inverted engines before but always tried to lower the tank to combat this problem. I side mounted my O.S. 91 fs and had to cut a hole just to clear the vavle cover. Not too noticeable.

As you can see in post 216:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4446772

I mounted my Saito .91 at about the 7 o' clock position (as viewed from the front). If you look closely, you can spot the 2 real pushrod tubes which are at slightly different angles than the fake/ dummy ones. Also, a Hobbico silocone exhaust deflector can be seen exiting the lower left side (AIRCRAFT left side) of the cowl. Engine ran great, never any problems with it mounted this way. No holes in the cowl except to access glow plug and needle valves, and exhaust.

I have been slowly putting together this arf...very slowly. I had the 100 saito resting on the factory mounts in the predrilled mount holes on the firewall with the valve covers at +- 7 oclock. I was checking the tank position and the tank is blocked by a mount screw by +- 1/4 inch or so..can't believe it. I don't understand why it doesn't fit!!! The center of the predrilled hole for the tank is +- 97 millimeters from the port/starboard sides of the fuse, and +- 90 millimeters from the top..this hole is not centered from top to bottom. I have done something wrong.. or is the tank hole in the wrong place..any advice would be welcomed.

Anyone knows more than me about this

I realize I am showing my ignorance about mounting this saito 100 in the hangar 9 hellcat arf..I can see that the tank hole from the factory is the same on other planes in this blog... I guess I can reverse the mounting screws so they don't intrude into the interior of the plane..I wrongly assumed all the holes predrilled on the model line everything up
