Help!!!!!!!!!

had a not so smooth landing this morning (pilot error) and need to do some very minor repairs around the landing gear mount...no biggie...

But... all four of the bolts that hold the landing gear plate metal "L" bracket are loose... the ones going in to the fuselage...

How do I tighten these???
I have a small socket that I can get down in there.. but it seems like the bolt/screw itself is just turning with the nut so it is turning but not actually tightening...
since it seems that the heads of these screws are buried in the foam, under the balsa sheeting, under the covering.... holding the head isn't really possible...

any ideas on how to tighten this little bolts?????

Help!

I had a problem with them a couple of weeks ago. I had to cut out the side - I cut out a block on the other side of the bolts - they are philips head screws in there. The side of the fuselage had broken where these screws mount so I removed the L bracket and on the outside, glued 1/8" lite aircraft ply. Redrilled the holes (actually drilled them first before I added the ply using the bracket as a template).

The area I cut out, I glued back in (it came out in a block with the foam attached to the back of it) using foam safe CA then re-covered it. I took the whole landing gear mount out in my repairs and used doublers in a lot of the places that had broken - epoxied the gear mount back in and things so far are holding up great.

appreciate the input... I was afraid there was no other easy way..... but taking the side of the fuse off is not an option for me...

I did do some reinforcing of the blocks. and was able to get the nuts in question tight....

what I did is held the end of the screw inside the fuse with a hemostat.. then used a very small box wrench to tighten the bolt.. did it work? yep, was it cumbersome and a pain? Yep!

but If the rain stops, I'll be able to fly today......

Great! Glad you got it worked out. I was in a position to where I HAD to reinforce the area where the screws come through the fuselage as well as sort of push things back into place.

A wheel pant caught on the maiden landing rollout - the gear block "twisted" a little causing the plane to nose over a little and catch the pant. It did a bit of damage - repaired it but after weeks of flying on CF gear, the repaired area just kept getting pounded and finally ended up with more damage than I had to begin with. Went back to the stock gear, repaired everything and seems to be holding up! So based on my experience I'd advise against using CF gear on this plane. It needs the shock absorbing flex of the stock gear to lighten the load on the gear mount area.

Hi Exeter,

What you did was really creative. The side bolts can be a little loose and as long as long the L plate doesn't move, you are fine. However with what you did, you shouldn't have any problems any more. Were you using stock gear? Normally stock gear gives up first before the LG plate but I guess I can't say that happens 100% of the time.

Shakes,

Thanks for the help and posting pics. Can be a great help to others with the same problem. Did you put the stock gear back on? Any problems so far?

Thanks guys,
Reza

Reza,
Yep - stock gear is back on and seems fine. No problems but I haven't had the chance to fly a whole lot since the repair. Last weekend it held up fine and I have continued to check everything.

Been using carbon gear....

but the field I fly off of is pretty rough, so I am thinking about going back to stock....the carbon may be too stiff!
it is easier to replace gear than redo a mounting plate!

Exeter, go back to stock gear!! My landings were not hard at all and the carbon gear just didn't flex enough. The mount took the brunt of every landing - smooth, soft, or rough.

The plane is built light and due to the posts in the 102" thread about the stock gear, we know Quique tested different strengths of gear on these planes to ensure that the gear was the shock absorber, not the airframe. I bought the CF gear thinking "Its only $20 more than the stock gear, lighter and stronger" which all sounds like a great thing but when you take into account the design of the plane - it's just not built to have that kind of shock I don't think. That's the trade off for having one of the lightest airframes out there in the 50cc range (and I serously don't want to give that up).
