Sounded like Blade CP or Esky HB CP2. They are both good helis. Check here for more info on existing surveys as to which is a good heli. http://www.helitown.com/Newbie.htm

i noticed you have some experience with aerobatic rc airplanes. you should transition well into one of the above mentioned helis. the cp2 is better stock, but harder to get parts for. the blade cp, well, everyone has one so you docs/mods/parts are easier to find. both helis are esesentially clones, but some parts/upgrades are not direct fits. for $350, you could get a cp2 and upgrade to to a brushless main and twin tail motors... that would be one heck of a micro 3d heli for the $$$, but still limited in capability compared to serious 3d heli's like a trex450se. something like that will be a more permanent fixture in your hanger, but you'd really have to stretch your budget.

No problem, just wanted to point out opportunities.
3 things I have learned with helicopters...
1)Gotta know where you plan on flying - Indoors or out
I have 4 different sizes- I highly recommend the Blade CP which is great for indoors and I fly it plenty outdoors but always waiting on calm wind conditions- gets old real fast. Shoguns / Trex good for either
2)Cost of parts- Gravity happens and you have to factor that in. I love my Eco 8's because of point #1 but when they go in, it really hurts the wallet
3)Gotta know what you want it to do - Cruising around or all out 3D
Don't get caught up in the "I have to have this whole list of upgrades" Most of these heli's fly pretty good stock and will allow you to learn the basic hovering and cruising around. Original parts are always cheaper too. Most upgrades will either increase sensitivity or lower all up weight- Also means parts usually aren't as durable - I.E. Aluminum bends very easy. Plastic flexes- get my drift? Upgrades will come later...

So as far as what to get, Answer this- What and Where and go from there

Ok, to be short then Yes capable. The shogun is designed for 3d out of the box. V.1 shoguns need a belt upgrade for the tail for realistic 3D though, and depending on which radio you wanted to go with you could easily do it for under $400

Shoguns do great 3D with the shaft drive. They just don't do well if the tail hits anything but air...(input gear strips).

You would have to be a really good pilot with a good handle on power/headspeed management to get the stock motor to do much more than loops and rolls...and better be quite good to get through those. The shogun really needs a brushless motor.....2300 -> 2800 rpm HS to fly well.

The shogun is a great flier, just a rather delicate crasher.....
