I received my 77 inch CG and I was pleased with what I saw. This is a great looking ARF and has lots of quality touches. My only criticism would have to be the over sized engine box and the rudder. What's with that thing? It's not even close to scale looks. I bet it's highly effective but definitely not IMAC legal. Also the canopy seems long, not quite the T version of the Edge but still longish.
I will be using a DL 50 once the engine has at least 4 gallons. It's currently on my Extra 300.

well i had a 42 i 3w on mine and it was about 17 ND Hlf pounds with smoke and it flew great bbut i lost it monday in a flat spin. theres pic of what ive done and my setup on here any qeustion about it ill try to answer for ya

gnirwin -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (4/27/2008 3:56:53 AM)

I don't think there are many manufactures that are selling aerobatic planes that are very scale. Oversized control surfaces are in right now because of the 3-d craze. I ordered one of these yesterday and I will be using either a dl-50 or a OS 1.60 2 stroke.

Hi,

Do you think one Futaba s3010(No MG, no digital, but 90oz torque @ 6V) is enough for one aileron ?
I only planning to do sport flying.
Thanks for replying.

NO I do not think so.

I would not go too weak (I mean the gear set) on a one servo wing.

Even if you wollow into the sky on a 120 glow, put the nose down from altitude and you have speed.

That is just my opinion.

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/20/2008 1:29:42 AM)

I have been flying my Edge for a few days and I really like it. It's very predictable and really slows down to absurd low speeds when it's time to land. I have powered it with a DL50 and it's really grossly overpowered. I can hover with just 3 or 4 clicks of throttle. I have used just one servo per wing and it's worked fine like that. I had to work a bit on wing/stabs incidence as inverted was a bit rough.
Setup:
5 Hitec 645 MG
1 Hitec 475 Throttle
DL 50
22X8 JXF
Align lipo regulator
1800 2s lipo for radio
r7000 Spektrum
1100 Nicad 4.8 for ignition

The plane has great looks and will make any pilot very proud!

kamirdawg -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/21/2008 1:55:28 AM)

No, I wouldn't use that servo. I would use at least the JR Sport ST126MG for that plane.

Like I said before here, Goldberg set those planes up for 2 servos per wing, and you can get away with one, if you use a more high torque, metal gear servo. I used them on my 77" Extra 330, and they work fine. Just make sure to go with the 6 volt battery pack, so you'll get the most strength out of the servo.[sm=punching.gif]

This plane of yours may be a little pricey, but DON'T risk losing it all becase of weak, nylon geared servos.[sm=cry_smile.gif]

Hope this helped. K-Dawg[sm=shades_smile.gif]

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/21/2008 1:52:12 PM)

KDawg,

The Hitec 645 MG is a powerful servo with almost 10 kgs of torque. It has metal gears and double ball bearings. I'm using this servo on all surfaces and the 475 on throttle. As I'm using a regulated lipo, I bumped voltage to 6V giving me full power to the servos. The JR servo you mentioned is basically in the same class. Thanks for the advice.

Got the same servos in my 77.5" Edge 540 allso on all surfaces on 4.8V and the work 100%. On two I have a bit of a centering problem. Not bad in the air though. But they are strong!

kamirdawg -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/21/2008 6:13:32 PM)

Thanks doublesixes, and Karldascher.

You're right. The Hitec 645s are also a good choice.[:D]

I should have made clear that my advice was to jrotor, who asked about using the Futaba 3010s nylon gear, with 90oz/in torque at 6 volts. Those I would not use. The 645s, as well as the JR ST126MGs are a good chioce. I think the JR sports may be a little faser, but either one is a good choice for sporting, and not too radical aerobatics.

When I started in this hobby, I began with a JR radio system. I stayed with the JR products for a while, and have began experimenting with other servos, and recievers. I came to find that the Hitec servos, and recievers are of good quality, and work very well with my JR transmitters. They seem to be less glitchy than the JR recievers that I've used (really, almost glitch free), and will accept any servos you want to use.[:D]

I've recently started a 50cc project, and I'm using all Hitec servos, except for the rudder. I researched, and found out that the Hobbico CS-170, ($89.99) is the same servo as the Hitec HS5955TG, ($114.99). Which one would you use?[:)]

There is nothing wrong with the Futaba products that I'm aware of. I just started with the JR, and some of the Hitec products are universal use, so I've mixed them up a little, and have had good results[:D]

I hope this helps, and clarified my last post.

Fly safe. Ken[sm=shades_smile.gif]

So Tell me how the DL-50 is working out? I've got a Dietrich 50cc Extra 260 I'm building up, and I'm going to use a Brison 3.2 on it, but I'd like to find out how some of the guys are doing with the DL-50, in case I do another 50cc, or if the Brison doesn't work out.

Regarding the engine overpowering the plane, maybe the Brillelli 46GT might be a good choice for transplant. I've read about them, and for this size plane, they seem to have enough power, without overpowering.[;)]

Check out these vids. One is the Extra 330, the other is the Yak 54. Both are the Goldberg 77" models, and do well with the Brillelli.
(I couldn't find a Goldberg Edge 540/Brillelli combo [:o])

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/21/2008 11:26:05 PM)

Ken,

I think the DL-50 is a good engine and very powerful. The 77" Edge is a bit small for that kind of output although its weight is on par with what CG recommends for a gasser configuration which is a Fuji 40 or something of the like. My DL-50 required some messing with the needles and isn't still running like it should. It's getting better with every flight though and the amount of available power on an airframe like my Edge (about 11 lbs) makes it very easy to operate. Sometimes lots of power is insurance for risky maneuvers.
KE is a lot of work as it's got coupling, not a whole lot but still noticeable. Inverted harriers require a very soft touch since the plane want to climb with just a hint of throttle. Rolling harriers are a breeze. Regular harriers are very easy showing virtually no wing rocking in high alpha situations. Hovers could be done for a long time if the plane is properly balanced. The plane tracks well but it's pitch sensitive and will shift up and down as it encounters different air densities. This is not a plane that shines in IMAC, but better suited for 3D, especially with a powerhouse like the DL-50.
Once the pilot gets really acquainted with this airframe, the fun begins. It can fly really slow and if you are into that kind of flying, you'll find the Edge/DL50 combo, very rewarding. I'm pretty sure there are far better choices for a 50cc frame like WH, Aeroworks, Dietrich, EF, QQ and others but I'm not really disappointed with my purchase.

Hi K-Dawg

Wish I could get my hands on that Diethrich 50cc plane. I like the looks allot and the way it is built (from pics I have seen on the net) I have never seen one in South Africa. Could maybe get one here but the shipment will proberly be as much as the kit. Let us know when it flies!

Cheers
Karl.

PS I have actually gone and crashed my plane a few days ago - total wrigh off. Did a low low knife edge and it managed to snap it full throttle into the dirt as it trached towards the crowd (at airshow)

I'm sorry about your loss, Karl. I hope you can replace it promptly. The components look reusable :)

kamirdawg -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/23/2008 3:30:28 AM)

Hi Karl,

Looks like a real bad day for you. [&o] So sorry, a real shame to lose a plane like that.

I think you would be right about the shipping on the Dietrich model. I got mine from a guy here on RCU, and he took care of the shipping. But I know if I were to pay for shipping from a retailer, it was $70 to $115. That's for shipping less than 1600 km. Out to where you are, it would not be worth it. I hope you find another nice plane like the Edge. Keep with it.

I will try and get some pictures posted on here of the Dietrich. In the mean time, look and enjoy the pics of my friend Aerozona in the airplane forums. [:D] Search for;

Dietrich 50cc Extra 260 (New Build)
He lives near by me, and has done a great job with his plane. Take a look[;)]

Let me hear how your new project turns out. Good luck to you My Friend.

karldaschner -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/23/2008 2:27:09 PM)

Hi guys

Yes the components are fine except for a stripped throttle servo, and the engine has some damaged. Sent it of to be fixed and Andreas is sending it back together with the exact same plane[:D] Liked the one to much and did not get enough of it. Will keep in touch. Happy building and flying Ken and doublesixes!

skynet33 -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/26/2008 3:19:06 AM)

If anyone is still interested, i finished my goldberg edge this morning after working a full day yesterday on it. for power i used the RC Showcase Roto 35 engine, all servos are digital and i used the stock hardware. personally i think that china coat covering should not be allowed on any arf aircraft! I did not actually weigh the airplane but it feels like about 13/14lbs. I test flew the plane today and it was a disappointment. i normally fly 30 and 40 % aircraft so i expect good performance from any size aerobatic aircraft. the goldberg edge seemed to have some bad tendency's such as wing rocking and wing stall at low speeds. also the rudder area is to much for a plane of this size. it causes the airplane to wander in point and slow rolls. it also has a bad affect doing the rolling circle. about the only maneuver it did well was the take off and the landing. if any one is interested in purchasing this airplane, it is in perfect condition. let me know.

karldaschner -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/26/2008 6:36:28 AM)

After a review like that I doublt that you will have a flood of interested buyers skynet33 [:D] Maybe your motor is to heavy? Sure the plane cant be that bad...

kmeyers -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (5/29/2008 1:37:22 PM)

Skynet33:
What you fly usually has little bearing on a review of a smaller less expensive model. I have flown some IMAC with this Edge and it is great for this size plane. My old GP Patty Wagstaff (same price,wing span and square inches) was such a heavy pig (16.5lbs) compared to this plane (13.4) that I could not indorse it to anyone.

This plane I can indorse!!

As for wing rock in harriers, mine is so stable it makes me look like I know what I am doing and believe me I don't. If the rudder is too effective use less.
The covering is not chinacoat and some of the hardware is junk and should not be used. The plane has all the usual problems ARF of this price range have, yet is well designed and a great flying plane.

I wish you good luck in selling the plane.

Supercharged6-71 -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (6/7/2008 12:50:58 AM)

Hello I purchased one of these arf's, I put a zenoah g38 in it. I have not flown in years and just am getting back into this, I also use to build Goldberg kits back in the 80's, I have never seen an arf till now.
I purchased a lanier dart 40 for my first plane, and now I have a Goldberg Edge 540 77 inch, I have flown this plane a few times. I had to add a lot of tail weight to get this plane's cg correct, it wieght's in at around 15 lbs.when I went to the flying field some of the others thier told me she was tail heavy and to remove all tail weight, which I have done. I also removed the nicad I was using and replaced it with a lipo. In total I have removed 400 grams. I have not flown it as the weather has been really bad, but am hopping to fly her in the next few days. I balanced this at 4 3/4 back from LE before removing everything. I asked about the cg and was told to remove as much weight as possable and don't worry so much about cg. I was told to go by how it flies and move cg as needed.
I also have the Lanier Yak 54 94 inch and the Lanier Stinger 80 inch, these two I[image][/image] hope to be flying in a couple months.

skynet33 -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (6/7/2008 12:35:37 PM)

Hi, I wish you lots fo luck on your first flights! the goldberg edge is a great looking airplane and maybe i did not give it enough of a chance. my edge is lite and the CG is correct. my intention was not to bash goldberg since i have flown lots of goldberg airplanes and i have never had any problems with any of them until now. again good luck with yours!

kmeyers -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (6/7/2008 2:58:35 PM)

Skynet33
I should say I as well did not want to flame you.

I know that Tower Hobbies had a big sale on these planes and there will be lots of new builders looking for info on set up and flying.

Supercharged6-71
My CG started at 4 3/4 back and I have moved it up to 4 5/8. My fuel tank is on the cg so cg does not change during flight. What size tank and where did you put it?

scottr/c -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (6/7/2008 3:31:03 PM)

my goldberg weight 17 and a half pounds with smoke and a 3w 42i and my cg was about 4 3/4 and flew great even had a couple of dead sticks no problems even at that heavy.
