I placed my fuel tank in the aft position since i used a gasoline engine. the roto 35cc engine is not that heavy, but it certainly is not as lite as a glo engine. bottom line i don't think weight was a problem. i need to make a few changes and see what happens. will keep you posted.

I am running stock tank, I had it mounted about 3 inchs in front of wing tube, now its moved back to the wing tube.
I was very happy with the quality of this plane, I did have a proplem with cover on my left wing about 3 inchs from fuselage.
I was thinking of putting a fuji bt64a engine on this plane, it wieghs the same as the g38 zenoah and swings a larger prop 22 compared to 18. Any thoughts on this would be great.
The first time I flew this plane, I had a very hard time getting it up in the air, I was running a 18x10 prop. I landed and was told by a member of our club to try another pitch prop, I put a 18x6 on her and she came up a hole lot better.
I have sense removed almost 500 grams, I was running a 7 cell 2100 nicad hooked to a castle creation bec. set at 6 volts. I have sense changed that for a 7.4 volt 2100 lipo.
I am using the JR DX6i Spectrum radio with 6 ds821 servo's and 2 futaba 3305 servo's. I used the futaba's for the elevator, I had these 2 servo's for my revo setting in a tool box so why not use them, but they are heavy.
Because I am using a Spectrum Radio I worry about useing a 4.8 volt rx battery. that 4.8 volts is just to close to the receivers 3 volt cut off for me. Any thoughts on this would be nice also.
I also understand that Tower hobbies has purchased goldberg and Lanier. I have found that when they run out of these planes they are gone for ever. I was lucky or I should say my son was lucky and he got himself the 93 inch Yak lanier had, I tried to find one of these, they are gone, if this is whats going to happen to this Goldberg Edge I am buying a few more for myself, I do like this plane

I would not use the Fuji 64A engine on this plane, simply for the horsepower to weight ratio. The engine is very heavy for this size and type of plane, and really won't perform the way you want it to.
If you really NEED to go with a gasoline engine, I would suggest using sometihing around 40-50cc range, (light weight 50cc). The Fuji BT43-EI is an engine that is recommended for this plane, (along with the O.S.1.60 FX) but I've heard of some issues that need to be addressed to get it running right. The other engine that comes to mind is the Brilleli 46GT. Good running engine, less weight, and plenty of power for the 77 inch planes.

I'm currently flying a Goldberg 77 inch Extra 330 with a Moki 1.35 glow engine, throwing around a 17X6 prop. It flys great. Plenty of power, light weight, and keeps the plane very manueverable.
If I decide to build up another 77 inch plane, I wouldn't hesitate to use this engine again.
I would also recommend using it, as well as the Moki(Mark) 1.80, or the O.S 1.60. And if you want to really juice up this plane, the Mark 2.10 is really hot. Again for the same reason, plenty of power, light weight.

I'm a little concerned about the servos that you're using. I think you would be better of with higher torque, metal geared servos for this size plane. The ones you have in there now, are just above standard, and have nylon gears that may strip out under high stress load manuevers you my exert on the control surfaces.
The Hitec HS 645MG, or the JR Sport ST 126MG servos are what I would recommed accross the wing, (I'm assuming you've got 2 per aileron) and 2 in the elevator. I think you're using the pull/pull sytem for the rudder, you could go with 1 or 2 Hobbico CS-150 digital, or use the Hobbico CS-170. Both are very good servos, and are great if you're on a budget. I'm using both of these servos in some of my planes, and have had no worries about failure.

You are also concerned about the 4.8 volt battery you're using, with the Spektrum 2.4 gHz rx. I recommend getting a 6 volt NiCd, or NiMh battery to use. Get one with a mAh rating of 2000, or 2700, and you should be ok. The 6 volt system will sqeeze all the power out of the servos, and because you've eliminated all the digital servos (DS821) You should get more time on the battery.

I hope this was helpful. Let us know how it's going .

Ken

Thanks for the info, I too was worried about these servo's, I ordered this radio and system from recomendations from my local hobby shop. I asked about these issue's and was told these would be fine, I have about 10 flights on this plane now, and I am building a 80 inch stinger and using the same servo's, I just ored them yesturday. I always use metal geared servo's in my buggies and was very concerned with the use of these nylon geared servo's.
I do run a 6 volt system, I was using a 7 cell nicad for wieght and power but have sense traded that for a 2 cell lipo 2100 mil amp. I use a Castle Creation bec. set at 6 volts.
This bird has a Zenoah g38cc in her as we speak, I am looking for a nice power plant for my stinger and was either going to put this g38 in it and purchase a new engine for my Edge. I like gas compared to nitro, I fly every nice day as health allows and 4 bucks a gallon is better then 13 a gallon for nitro. Don't get me wrong I hate the price of gas, thats way I no longer drive but to the flying field and home. But $4 is better then $13. anyhow I do like the sound of that gas power plant.
Anyway this is where I stand, looks like the weather will be good on monday morning, so I hope to get some flights in then.

I fly a CG Edge 540 with a DL50 gas engine turning a Xoar 22x8. My radio and ignition packs are bundled together and I placed them on the last tray. RX is an r7000 fed by a 2s 1800 lipo pack. Reg is an 6 amp Align tuned to deliver 6v. Ignition uses a 4.8v NiCad pack. I'm not using the provided tank but a 14 oz Dubro instead. That's plenty for 17 minute flights. The plane has Hitec 645MGs all around but throttle which is a 475. I'm using just one servo per wing and are placed in the outboard tray.
The plane is a great flier and does everything well, now that I became used to it. Initially I had difficulties with KE flight. With the DL50, power is unlimited and it can hover at just 3 clicks, way below 1/4 stick.
With the packs back there, the balance is spot on. I can grab the plane by the black tube and it just balances perfectly. In the air, it translates into solid tracking.
The only disappointment is the wing covering, especially the leading edge part. It peels off easily so be careful and keep an eye on that. This Edge looks great in the air and with the 50cc, it will let any pilot do any maneuver with power to spare.

Hi

Do you think I can use Zenoah G-45 for this plane ?
It turns 22x10 at 7700 rpm.
G-45 is about 1 lb heavier than DL-50.

Thanks.

I would be a little worried about using a ? esc speed controler's bec as a substitute for a purpose built voltage regulator for 8 servos in a plane this size.

kawmirdawg
The 3305 is a high torque (124 oz) MG servo.

Yes I think a g45 will work in this plane. Yes the g45 is heavy for it's size. If you already have this motor and want to use it, you might consider converting it to electronic ignition. More power, less weight and easier starting.

All ARF's should be ironed, heat gunned and trim solvent treated for peace of mind. IMHO

The 3305 is a Futaba. Any high torque, 120oz plus, MG servo is what I'd use.

Sorry, I just don't know enough about the Futaba models to call them.I've only had the experience with the Hitec, and JR equiptment.

I do know Futaba is high quality gear, and I don't have a problem with these servos, I just haven't used them.

Thanks Kmeyers for the info. I learned something new.

Hey Guys, Im looking for some advise on the set up for 3-d flying. I have flown mine several times now and love it. The problem I'm having is: it seems to be very unstable a low speeds. Like hovering and harriers. I am faily new to this style of flying, and I'm not sure if it is the set up, plane, or me??? The Cg is currently set up slightley tail heavy.

any tips on setting this up???? thanks.

I don't know your setup but with a DL50, the Edge is very stable at all speeds and in fact have not experienced any bad tendencies as snaps at close to stall speed. The plane floats like a foamie when it's time to land. A very forgiving and easy plane to fly. With the DL50 (22x8), harriers are safe as there's instant response. Hovering could be done at 1/4 throttle or even less. I'm running not the fanciest or fastest servos in the business (645MGs) but are strong and durable. I'm running lipos with a voltage regulator (6v) for the RX and a 4 cell NiCad pack for ignition.

The goldberg 77 inch edge is a great arf, I did go to the hardware store and purchased 2 springs and 2 links that look like a chain link that has a part that unscrews and one adjuster that tightens from the middle, i drilled a hole in each landing gear about 2 inchs bellow the fuse, and this made a very nice suspension for the landing gear. I bent the gear once and after the fix it never bent again. Even after the wreck the gear was not bent, the springs were stretched over 2 feet, the axle the wheel went on was bent 90 degrees, but the landing gear did not bend.
I really want another one of these planes, but am no longer in this hobby. I flew for over 5 years in the 80's, I never once lost a plane do to radio problems. I lost all my planes do to a theft.

As for power, I only flew with a gas engine, I had a 38cc in it, I just ordered a 50cc it arrived today, anyone need a new 50cc, with muffler and standoff's, new in box, haven't even opened the box that it shipped in, more then likely this will end up in the basement with all the rest of the stuff.
I did find that it needs a 20 inch prop to do unlimited and the Zenoah 38cc just didn't have unlimited capability, I did replace the stock muffler with a pitts style, it only had about 3 flights on that.
I did hear that no one is making nitro anymore, if I stayed in this hobby it would have been with giants, I threw 3 new giants in my basement today, I wanted to burn them, but held off on that.

This Edge needs 5 HP to fly unlimited. And you need that power and torque in the low end. I doubt any glow engine could give you that. This airframe shines when built light and with a DL or DA 50 in the nose.
Supercharged, sorry about your loss.
