Is indredible that the camera survived!! IS a g38 magneto one?? very good hand starting. I think you are in love of with your edge. I am with my destroyed eagle too and bought another one

Supercharged6-71 -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/7/2008 12:45:52 PM)

Thats great you replaced your Eagle, I am replacing my Edge, waiting for it to arrive hopefully anyday.
The G38 is magneto type engine, I believe something went south in the radio. The battery still had a full charge after this crash. I have noticed with the JR radio I am using, its the DX6i, that sometimes the receiver blinks after turning eveything on, and I must shut off receiver then transmitter, and turn on transmitter then receiver again to get what I call a clean bind. The problem with this is, when everything is mounted in the plane, I can't see the receiver and have no idea if its blinking or not, this worries me alot, I do not want to loose another plane, there wasn't anything left of my edge so all equipent is new.

GAS4ever -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/7/2008 1:39:36 PM)

i have my 9CAP PCM since 8 years still using !! im a bit sceptical in the new 2,4 techonlogy.

This is my other plane with dual pcm receivers. ( I like so much futaba pcm receivers)

I like your plane, where is it you fly. I lived in Pacific Grove Ca. and looks like you are on the northern coast of Ca.
I really feel I lost my plane do to radio failure and not battery or anything like that. It was a new plane only about one month old, it had about 1 gallon of gas ran through it.
Also do you only use futaba servo's, I allways use 3305 metal geared servo's, I have found some rather inexpensive gear driven servo's made by tower pro, have you ever heard of these, or would you put them in a plane of any size?
At 35 bucks a pop for servo's stocking a big bird with 7 to 10 servo's can get expensive, expecially when they only make it for one month before they are lost, I was able to reuse 2 sevo's out of 9. the others were ruined, locked up solid.

Hey Supercharged,

How's the build going? You will be fitting a gas engine in yours, right?
In order to make my DL-50 fit properly, I had to take an inch off the mounting box. The engines standoffs were too long, unfortunately, so I had to work on the timber side.
The plane has close to 400 flights now and I have tuned the engine to the point that's reliable yet very strong and moved things around so my plane's balance is good for 3d and quite stable for IMAC style flying.
Keep us posted on the progress.

GAS4ever -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/15/2008 2:40:35 AM)

Hi guys!! how much milimeters has the cowling wide?? in order to put a 50cc twin gasser

Nicolas

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/15/2008 3:13:31 AM)

Sniper,
The cowl is sufficiently wide to fit DA 50, a DL-50 or any 50cc gas engine even a twin, I think. It measures 22 cms wide.

GAS4ever -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/15/2008 3:42:33 AM)

This is the engine, i m in doubt because the sparkplugs

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/15/2008 6:26:10 PM)

Yeah, I see what you're saying. You may have to dremel out the sides of the cowl to allow for the sparks and cables. It could be done but it wouldn't look too pretty.

GAS4ever -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/15/2008 8:19:29 PM)

So bad, an ugly cowling will be, better i tink to buy mi third dl50 Chers!

PAPE -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/25/2008 7:08:58 AM)

Hi, I just bought my self an edge 540 77", and wondering around found this thread.

I wanted to know if any one can fill me in with any building tips, tricks.or any recomendation. I will replace most harware with dubro. and use hitec digitals on the plane. I havent bought servos yet. but I plan using 1 servo per wing.

I was going to get a dl-50 but couldent pass up on a great deal for a GF50I its the CRRC 50cc with the side intake and red head.

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/26/2008 3:05:25 AM)

Building my Edge was straight forward and about the only significant mod was adapting the firewall to take my DL 50 because I wanted to use that engine with the standoffs provided. I had to chop 1 inch off of the length of the mounting box. Other than that, the build was as per the manual. I used all of Goldberg's hardware minus the pull-pull rudder system as I had to place the rudder in the back for balancing issues.
The power my Edge has with the DL 50 is insane and I wouldn't want to fly her with anything less. Truly spectacular up-lines that can go forever. The plane has mild wing rocking when doing a positive harrier and almost none when switching to negative. Hovers are really easy to do. Xoar 22X8 does the trick. Good luck with yours!

PAPE -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/26/2008 3:14:55 AM)

great to hear that. I also understand you have over 400 flights on yours. with stock harware and one servo per wing. then mabye the stock hardware is ok to use. I was thinking I will ad weight with upgraded hardware, so I think all weight to receive the plane to look at the hardware before buying aftermarket. what about spinner, what spinner sizr do you have? and can I see more pics of your plane if you have any please.

Thanks

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/26/2008 4:19:44 AM)

I've been flying my Edge with and without a spinner. I'm considering getting a 3 1/2 inch Trueturn because it's important to have quality in the nose. I have used cheap, plastic cones but I would not advice going that way.
The plane is really strong in every area and can withstand less than perfect landings, lots of them. By now, it probably has over 500 flights and aside from some peeling off the chinacote, especially around the leading edges, the bird is in one piece and none of the hinges/movable parts show sign of wear.
About the 1 servo per wing thing, if you use a strong servo, like an affordable HItec 645 MG, you should not have issues at all. I placed my servos in the outboard position. The plane is a sweet roller and in fact it does everything quite nicely. Here are a few pics.

PAPE -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/26/2008 7:54:23 AM)

I just saw the tru-turn spinners in the 3 1/2" size and they are $65 and up. the only one I think would work nicely was a $75 P-51 3.5 oz and cut for big props.

Thanks for the pics, Ill wait till I receive the plane to see the hardware but if you used the stock hardware and have over 500 flights on the plane then you have one of the best planes ever built and your one of the best pilots ever to fly, usualy most 3d planes I know dont last that long.

I was worried about the hardware because ther is a post her on RCU about a goldberg yak 77" haven one of the horn screws split in 2 parts ON THE GROUND.
aperanly the plane never flew, and just because of the engine idleling the screw broke.

Ill go over the plane with my iron when I recieve it and I was thinking of going over the wing leading egde with some clear monokote.

kmeyers -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/28/2008 5:39:52 AM)

Up date
IMHO just an upgrade to a high quality bolt plus the included hardware will work. I ended up with a 6x32 x2 ½ that is countersunk flush. The Rudder is all-thread 2 ½ long, which was perfect for a heavy duty hitec servo horn with 2 1/8 spaced holes.
The plane flies like a dream. I have about 75 flights. I don’t putt around, lots of snaps, points, reversing rolls and other hard use. No problems so far. There is one more of these at the field with a Brielle 45cc. He loves his too.
I added a piece of ½ inch angle aluminum to the top of the landing gear inside the plane to tie the two halve pieces together.
The cowl is on with 8x32x1/2 nylon screws going into a slightly beefed up with hard balsa block threaded and glued to the original tab (4-40 blind nut and screws kept vibrating out).
The throws on high rates are 35 degrees up & down on the ailerons and 50 & 55 on the elevators. The rudder is parallel to the angled portion on the elevators. I’m still working out the two low and medium rates.
No hint of flutter so far, and I have come over the top with to much power a couple of times. All hinge gaps are sealed.
Ken

PAPE -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/28/2008 10:51:18 AM)

good to hear more good stuff about this plane. just out of curiosity what servos you use?

Thanks

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/28/2008 4:38:00 PM)

This Edge is sold cheaply @ Tower but make no mistake, it's not a cheap airframe. It's got plenty of high end features as point hinges, blind nuts throughout, a very solid LG, roomy canopy with plenty of options for equipment placement and flexibility of rudder servo installation, whether pull pull or in the tail. The cowl is secured by 4 4-40 screws that fit into corresponding blind nuts. I used small tygon 1mm pieces to prevent loosening due to vibrations.
This bird gets to see more action than any plane I ever owned. It's just a matter of decent weather, gas up and you're in the air. The DL-50 uses very little fuel because I basically use it at 1/4 or less throttle for most of the flight.

kmeyers -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (8/29/2008 6:08:23 AM)

This is my setup (post # 30). One servo per wing.
Ken

ORIGINAL: kmeyers

I just finished mine. I ran the engine in the front yard for two hours at 3000 rpm on 30:1.

It weighs 13 lb 6 oz empty.

If all checks out tomorrow morning could be the maiden.

Hitec 5625's on the wings and elevators,
Hitec 5925 on the rudder and a
JR 537 on the throttle controling a
40cc SPE gasser.
16 oz sullivan tank on the CG (under the wing tube, I relocated the rudder servo tray) which is 4.625 behind the leading edge of the wing.

rpembert -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/2/2008 7:09:06 PM)

How do you guys think a Zenoah G23 would do. Not looking for 3D at all. More basic IMAC than anything.
Thanks,
Joshua

kmeyers -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/3/2008 6:01:07 AM)

rpembert
I think you could not perform ( to the appearance of a judge ) even the basic IMAC pattern, 14 pound plane with 12-13 pounds of thrust.
The basic for example has a vertical up line with a half roll centered, you would not be able to have a nice line segment on each side of the roll.

I'm swinging a 20x8 Xoar @ 7400 rpms (40cc~20 lb thrust) and my plane requires patience to complete many of the Imac manuvers.

For that engine I would look for one of the plane 68-70 inch span with an all up weight of less then 11 pounds. and thats just for minium performance.

You would have to get the all up weight down to 9 1/2 for it to be sweet.

Just IMHO
Ken
Don't shoot the messenger

rpembert -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/3/2008 6:19:12 AM)

thanks kmeyers ill be looking for a larger engine

doublesixes -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/3/2008 2:44:36 PM)

I'll have to agree with Ken, I was flying a 14 pound Extra wth a CRRC Pro 26cc and uplines were not entirely unlimited. Like I said before maybe on here, this bird's happy with 5 HP. The only small problem is that since my DX7 does not have expo functions for throttle, managing that brute force is tricky. To be honest, the plane (Edge)is perfectly balanced with the DL50's weight but it would be great to tame those ponies in a smoother way through the radio. I guess i could adjust the linkage by mechanical means.

rpembert -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/3/2008 5:19:39 PM)

Well i found a used G38 from RCIgnitions.com. He does great work on zenoahs, making them lighter and all. I saw an CG Edge on youtube flying and looks to be the ticket.
Let me know what ya think.

The Redneck from down south,
Joshua

rpembert -> RE: CARL GOLDBERG 77" EDGE 540 (9/4/2008 1:59:02 AM)

I just got the tracking number from tower and under the discription it say that the weight of the package is 66 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![X(]
Is that right????
