Hey all,

I'm looking for an Edge 540. I was looking at either the new Goldberg 77" or the WH 25% 72". Anybody seen,flown or heard anything good,bad or otherwise especially the Goldberg 77" I'll be putting my Moki 1.8 in it. I have it in my old Midwest 80" Cap,and it flies awesome.. So I think it'll fly either very well..

I am just finishing up a 77" Goldberg Edge 540. I have built several Goldberg kits over the years and found them to be excellent products. After a 5 or 6 year rest from R/C I decided to jump in again. My first choice was a Goldberg Super Chipmunk not realizing they were now a "new company" and the quality of the kit was not the same. With all the griping I did about the "new Goldberg" people were suprised that I bought their Edge. So far I am not disapointed. The construction is excellent, the covering is very good with only a few bubbles to be ironed out and some edges to be ironed down. I am not impressed in the painting, my cowling should have been rejected, the silver was messed up when they tried to repaint a couple of spots. The bands miss lining up on one side by allmost an 1/8". The paint is very easily chipped and there are spots on the cowling and the landing gear that are chipped. The wheel pants look pretty good but suspect they also will chip easily. I am useing a DA-50 and while fitting the cowl found that I needed to reduce the overall length of the motor and mounts by at least 1/4" to get the cowl to fit. Luckily a machinist at work was able to make 4 motor standoffs a quarter inch shorter. I also had to enlarge the hole in the firewall to clear the carb. It was also necessary to remove part of the bottom of the engine box to clear the Slimline smoke muffler. With all the carving I had to do on the engine box and firewall I re-inforced the box with fiberglas tape and epoxy.
I am useing all Futaba gear with S 9451's on all control surfaces except the rudder which has a S9152, throttle and ignition use standard servos.
As soon as I can get a couple of fuel dots I will finish plumbing up the fuel and smoke system, check the CG and go flying........keep you posted

Sounds like a good ARF.. Keep up with the building and flight report. Maybe some pics or possibly a video?

I have the WH Edge w/G-62 and the Goldberg Yak 54 w/G-45.......The Wild Hare is by far a better product in quality of construction, available hardware, and customer service.......... Anyone who has called Goldberg/Lanier customer service should understand.....[;)]

The Edge is all done and it had it's first 2 flights yesterday. It has an empty weight of 18 lbs. 13 oz. I have about 7 1/2 lbs of gear in the plane so I think Goldbergs 12 1/2 to 13 1/2 # guestimate of flyimg weight is way off. [:o] I was able to get the C/G right just by moving batteries around. The inflight trim took only a couple of clicks up on the elevator. I am running a Zoar 22x 10 prop and at 6300 rpm I have 26# of thurst[:D]
The first flight was uneventful. About 5 mins. into the second flight we heard a strange noise so I landed the plane. I found some of the covering coming off leading edge the right wing. I went over the plane with an iron as the parts were taken out of the box, but I guess I missed a spot. There is not much overlap of the covering. The only other problem was that tail must have hit harder than it looked as tail steering was lost after the plane slowed. The tail wheel bracket is made out of aluminum and was bent enough that the springs lost tension.[:'(]
When the covering is patched and a new tailwheel assy. installed I'll try again.
All in all I'm pretty satisfied with Edge. I would give it a "9" for construction and a "5" for finish. It is more plane than I am used to, but in the long run is going to be fun airplane.

My friend is away at college. He has a guy in his club there and he has a Edge. He had a real bad case of aileron flutter with 2 high powered servos an all his linkage was all correct on his Ailerons. I'm pretty sure it got totalled on it's first few flights. So just make sure you keep your throttle management correct. keep it slow on the downlines no high speed dives and you should be ok..

Thanks for the heads up on the flutter, that is also mentioned in the manual. I plan to install gap seals on the ailerons and that also is supposed to help with flutter.

I am astounded a CG Edge,77 inch ,DA 50 and over 18 pounds weight.That is just all wrong. I have had my eye on this thing too,but even with a light engine it would weigh hefty? no? Almost all 50 cc gassers with 85 inches of wing weigh in at 16 pounds..??? [X(]

Hells yeah its to heavy!!! My BME Yak 54 weighs in at under 17lbs. with an 87" span and a DA 50 with a canister exhaust.. Not sure what the Wing Area is on this 540,but it sure doesnt sound right..
But you never know..

Your right, my Top Gun Edge at 78" span with a MVVS 45mag in it comes in at 15Lb 10onz that 18lb monster sounds like a snap roll waiting to happen with that wing loading.

These are the specs. right off of the box: Wingspan 77", Overall length: 74", Wing Area: 1139 sq. in., Flying weight: 12.5 to 13.5 lbs. As I said my equipment added is about 7 1/2 lbs leaving an empty weight of about 11 1/4 lbs. I suppose I could weigh again using a different scale, however mine are new and I have no reason to doubt their accuracy. I think I will e-mail Goldberg and ask where they got their figures. That should be interesting !!

In my original post on this plane I was complianing about the weight. I did call Goldberg and as expected they didn't know how it could be that heavy. I have flown the plane 3 times and it flies great. Last weekend when I tried a decending left turn to land it rolled sharply to the right. Luckily I was able to pull it out and came around to try it again. Same thing happened at almost the same spot. I decided on a downwind landing as the apporach was a little easier to make from that direction. I was able to take home a whole airplane!!

The tank that comes with the plane is/was 24oz. I fly about 10 to 12 mins. at a time useing about a third of a tank. I swaped the tank for a 16 oz. Also I swaped the heavy nicads and NMHD that I had for 2 Fromeco Peerless 2400 and regulators, one for ignition and one for the rec. I may put another 2400 in for the rec. if necessary.

The empty weight is now 16# 10 oz. and flying weight with the smaller tank is 17# 6oz. I hope to get flights in this weekend so I can report on any inprovements.

It would be interesting if a person was going to choose this plane would put it together with no equiptment and then weigh it. I have a Aeroworks 50cc Yak QB on order and I intend to do just that to see what the starting point is.

thanks Rv9. I have a spare OS 160 looking for a home. How do you think this motor will do on the plane. Little concern about the 12.5 -13.5 weight

I don;t know which OS engine you are refering to. If it is the OS 1.6 FX 2 stroke the you have about 3.7 hp at 9K and a weight of about 42 oz. with a muffler. If it is a OS 160 flat twin four stroke the you have about 2 hp @ 10K and a weight of 38.8 oz. My Edge has the DA-50, 5 hp. and 50 oz. with muffler. I have to add 1.5 oz. lead to the tail plus a heavier tailwheel bracket. The OS two stroke looks like the better choice if that is what you have. You would save 8 oz. over what I have, may be able to use a smaller, lighter prop and spinner and save even more weight plus get rid of any tail ballast.
In any case I would be very surprised if you got any where near Goldbergs posted weight.

yes I am talking about the OS 160 FX 2 stroke. I have to do some more research on this plane with see if anyone used this Os 160 and how it does.

Man, that is heavy. I have a Dave Patrick 78" Extra with a Moki 180, and it is heavy, but not that heavy.

Someone my friend flys with at college,had a bad Aileron flutter that made the plane a total loss. He even had two servos per aileron and the gaps were sealed.. I didnt see what happened so I dont know how it happened,but it did.. Which is bad because I like the size of it..

I can report a little more on my Goldberg Edge 540 refered to above in above posts as an "18 lb. monster". I have removed the DA 50 and replaced it with a Saito 180. All the Fromeco electrics are gone and were replaced with a 5 cell nimh which doubled as ballast and was mounted just behind the engine. I have also pulled two of the aileron servos and now only have one per wing. The weight, minus fuel is now 14 lb. 2 oz. I have yet to fly but it flew great with the DA 50 it was just very hairy when slowing down for landings it wanted to snap. I am a little worried about aileron flutter, especially with only one servo. I read somewhere that you needed good throttle managment on this perticular model as the flutter may be caused by excessive speed. I hope to get it back in the air soon and will give feedback on the performance.

I have almost finished this plane, my all up weight with all stock hardware and a crrcpro gf451 (engine 3.5lbs) is 13lbs 4 ozs. That includes 3 2700 mah nimh batts 4 5625s on the wings, 2 5645 on the elevators some hi torgue hobbico servo on the rudder standard on throttle, 10ch jr receiver and lots of xtra glue including triangle hardwood epoxied on the firewall. I dont see how this plane could weigh over 14.5 lbs, you would have to be seriously loading it up with stuff. One thing to watch out for is the hardware that comes with it. The 6-32 control horns have snapped off on other peoples planes causing flutter and causing crashes, they are also cheap plastic and mine had really loose clevis hinges that would cause a sloppy control surface. I recommend replacing these with an 8-32 setup such as thisGP HD Control Horn. That is what im using. Everything else seems great, mine had excellent build quality and the covering is first class. Once my new control horns come in it will be finished and ill give a flight report.

I think the fx 1.6 would be great on this plane, Goldberg even recommends it. I think it would give it plenty of power for all aerobatics including 3d and would keep the weight down compared to a gasser.
