Can one of you guru's advise - my Aquacraft vegas .18 is miserable to start the first time out.  It's gotta be me - what am I doing wrong?

 Here are the symptoms:

- after the boat has sat for a few hours, overnight, etc.
- boat won't start (easily)
- will do a quick "braaaappp" for a .5 second or so then die
- will keep doing this until out of some miracle it catches and runs
- THEN it runs great....and will do a hot restart with one or two pulls

Setup specifics:

- Aquacraft .18
- either K&B or Odonnell OD-9 plug
- wildcat 50% nitro fuel
- head shim installed
- C cell igniter

 Starting procedures:

- prime fuel line, get bubbles out
- put thumb on carb, pull starter a couple times, make sure fuel is in throat of carb
- set throttle adjust on RC unit so throttle plate is partly open (about midpoint)
- put igniter on plug
- very gently pull starter until i feel a little 'pop' in the engine
- pull starter with medium velocity

Typically it will then go....brrrraaaaapppp...and die.   Once it does start, it idles great and then runs fine from there.  Restarts when warm are a breeze.

Technique problem?  Wrong plug?  Wrong fuel?  Wrong settings on the motor????

My neighbors are starting to think I have OCD.  HELP!!

OK - new set of batteries in the igniter and it starts much better.  Doh!

Anyone know what size the set screw is that secures the rudder to the rudder post?  Mine has vanished and I now have a floppy rudder.

I just posted this in another thread, unfortunately Aquacraft doesn't have new hulls listed on their website . Here's a link to their parts list:

Ok im new to the rc boats and wanting to know if the miss vagas is a very good starter boat iv had alot of experience with nitros so im not too worried about the engine part but will it mess up the engine if it gets wet like if I flip it? And are parts easy to get? I really think they are cool though and iv heard some good things about thier engines that they last a long time.

My first rc boat was a Miss Vegas from a few years ago and I still run it to this day, but I have an .18 CVR in it now. The engine will be fine even if you flip it...just make sure to flush all of the water out of it before you try to start it again and run some type of after run oil at the end of the day so the bearings wont rust between usage. ;-)

Well, I'm now part of the 'need a new hull' crew.  Pilot error and boat met dock at full tilt boogie.

I think I'm going to try to fix it... will post some pics.

Any suggestions on how to best flush out all the fuel oil residue coating the inside of the hull?

Needing new hulls? I posted a wanted ad at INTLwaters and was able to get a brand new one for $125 shipped and a slightly used one for $90 shipped. There was about 6 people that had hulls, of course now down to 4. Post up over there and see.

Does anyone know offhand what the part number is for the Octura Collet that fits the Vegas?

It has been a few years since I got mine...and just can't remember. Thinking it is the 5mm to .150 collet?

perfect so my set up will be strut 7/8 from the bottom of boat to top of strut, 1 degree positive angle, sharpened grim fin tucked under at 5 degree, and the rudder tucked back 1 degree. Does that sound about right?

The strut Depth Depends on Prop selection, you should be measuring from the "Bottom" of the Strut to the "Bottom" of the boat. 7\8 is a good Starting Point for a 2 Blade 35mm Prop.
I would start with the strut a 0*, Get the Depth right first which can only be Fine Tuned On the Water, Then Tweak strut angle for Current Pond Conditions.

I don't use the Grimm fin so I can't give you a starting point for Tuck there. But the fin Must be Tweaked Also, it needs to be Parallel with the Inside Edge of the Sponsons Ride Pad, and with the Hooked grim fim you will need to Make Sure the bottom tip is Parallel with the Bottom of the Sponsons Ride Pad. If the fin is Tweaked to far Forward at the bottom it will cause the sponson to Lift and to far Back will cause the sponson the Dig.

I have been reading the vegas thread in search of my answer, but can not find it, just mention of the problem i am having.

I've set up my boat pretty much according to the thread. strut at 7/8 witha degree of positive, turn fin is tucked under 5* , the rudder kicked back 1 degree and i set my cg at the middle of my fin.

Here is the problem, the boat will be jammin along and then all the sudden disappear. the sponson drops and under she goes.

I know this has to do with my set up. I dropped my strut to 3/4 put more positive in as well, tucked rudder back another degree. I also tucked the fin to 15* I know i should be making one adjustment at a time but I feel like i get punched when she dives under at 40+. Just trying to get the front end up. I have yet to run it with these adjustments.

One last question the fin has pos/neg adjustment to it as well. Should the bottom of the fin be parallel with the sponson?

Also when you guys are saying the fin is tucked 5 degree under sponson what do you measure off of? The sponsons have 2-3 degree of angle on them, What tool are you using to measure degree? I picked up a metal protractor. Thank you for any insight you can provide. Trying to have the boat 100% dialed in by June.

Well without Seeing a vid it's hard to say Exactly what your problem is, But the 3 areas I would concentrate is,, Turn Fin,, CG,, And Make 1 Change at a time. Take your tools To the Pond, Run It,, Adjust It, Run It,, Adjust It,, etc... Every Boat has to be Tweaked. No 2 boats are the same and No 2 people Drive the same.

The Hook in the bottom of the turn fin can Definitely Cause the problem your having.
If the Bottom of the turn fin is tilted To Far Forward it will Cause the sponson to "LIFT"
If the Bottom of the turn fin is tilted To Far Back it will cause the Sponson to "DIVE"

Fin Tuck will also need to be Tweaked for Your Driving Style...
The more you "Tuck" the fin Under the sponson, the more it Pulls the Sponson "Down" tight to the water in the turns. If it is Over Tucked it will also cause the sponson to Lift or Dive if it is Misaligned.
If the fin is not Tucked enough the inside(starboard) sponson will tend to Lift in the turns.
The Hook on the bottom of the Grim Fin is there to help Hold the sponson down without a lot of Fin Tuck.

As a Starting Point set the Main Body of the turn fin Perpendicular (90*) to the ride surface of the sponson, Test It,,then Tweak\tuck Just enough to hold the sponson down in the turns.

Also try moving some weight around to get your CG at the Back Edge of the Turn Fin.

Last but Definitely Not Least,,,, Small Changes and Patience will get you Bigger Results Faster and cause Much Less Frustration, than erratically making Multiple changes and Crashing Again.

From your explanation of What the boat is doing I would have to gess it's Somthing Like This
Which this is one of my Gas Hydro's not a vegas but it's the only one I had a Hooked Fin on and vids of What can go Wrong,, LOL.

you may also experience one of these

This is an Example of how Small Adjustment and Patience will "Pay Off"

Asupervee72 your boat looks wicked fast in the video, but your strut appears to be set to a positive angle. If you try running it level to the bottom of the afterplane of the hull you will see a dramatic difference in the handling of your boat. Check out this link http://www.modelpowerboat.com/content.php?122-RC-Model-Boat-Hull-Attitude Another less popular possibility is that you may have exceeded the RTR Miss Vegas' performance envelope and will be doing a lot more retreiving than running in the future. Best of luck with your testing, looking forward to seeing your results.

Scott
