Just an update of my earlier mod; I took my rotor head apart as per routine maintenance. I checked the o-rings I installed about 2 weeks ago, that would about 50 flights in all:

And I'm happy to report that the o-rings still looks fantastic:

Probably one of my easiest mods; drilling to deepen the rotor head dampers so that instead of only 2 o-rings, I can install 4:

I've ordered more o-rings, but I'm happy I won't be needing them so soon.

I've just about run out of mods for this bird. It sure feels weird not having anything else to drill, file or glue. All I do now is fly - spending more dollars on lipos instead of parts.

I do however, have two more mods to do before I lay this thread to rest, and thats a carbon fibre air frame and an Align modified washout base.

Till then, safe flying and good luck.

OK, So now we need to get together, buy Mr Bear a T-Rex frame and see what he does with it !

Or seeing as how the 'Rex has already been tweaked by so many other people, and you like the hand-made stuff, perhaps you would enjoy building one of these ?

MiniMum Gyrocopter (image link didnt work)

Detailed Build Thread an plans are here
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=543196

One of them is likely to be my next project. I used to fly the real thing until I sold it a few years back

and am pretty keen to recreate it in RC.

What do you think Mr Bear.. Interested ? (feel free to delete this post if you think its off-topic to your #36 Ultimate Masterpiece)

Hey Spockie / Squadri - No fair! Stop sending those build logs - you're giving me ideas! I'll never be able to stop...
Anyway guys, I just bought a house, and that needs a bit of mod-ding too. So I'll rest the heli for now .... except for that frame and washout base...

I had a huge crash yesterday attempting my first loop. Huge! Unfortunately, the guy video taping the scene was a bit tipsy (afternoon beer), so he only caught me at the apex, before plunging into hard earth!. It was ugly guys.... broke the Align feathering shaft clean off – never seen that before….

Here's the video (you'll need a fast modem for this one…):

5 hours of rebuilding during the night (finished at 2 am), the next day, very lightly drizzling with tropical rain, I did another attempt - but this time at much higher altitude!!

I did few successive loops - and after a whole night of restless sleep - it felt fantastic!

My audiance wanted a nearer view of the loop, so, complying, I did a low altitude loop..... the apex was at 30 to 40 foot high, and I lost it all!! Only full collective and full trottle saved my arse. It was a fantasticly close one!

Anyway, I'm off to bed. Sleepy. Evening calls for more loops, but this time, hopefully no more heart attacks.

Fly safe and good luck.

wow that was a good save i thought for a sec that you were going to crash but it felt like you didnt put enough negative pitch up there as it climed down when upside down, well good save nways. keep them mods comming i dont post often but i always read them. i actually did some of your mods when i had my walkera 36 but them i crahsed too much because of weak parts so i got a trex450xl now its a great heli and like you compared in one of your pics it is much bigger than the walkera 36 and when powering up it is so powerful it scared me and had to cut the throrle yup--you can hear it breaking the wind like nothing but for some reason im so used to the walkera and soft movements that this is a beast to control.

drtmind, I didn't put ANY negative pitch on that loop. . The loop was done on Normal curve (not Idle up), and totaly on the heli's momentum, full back-elevator, zero pitch at the top, positive on entry and exit. Probably why I lost so much height!

I'll put in -ve pitch next time.

The Trex XL is a great heli. The rotor head design is compact and stable. Don't be afraid of the power - you'll need it as you progress in your flying skills. I'm now looking for a bigger / better motor, and 2070 Extreme Thunder power lipo. Flying - its an addiction.

The 450th motor from justgofly.com or the supposed Z-Power copy of it seem to be pretty nice upgrades for these Heli's. Lots of people running them with nice words to say. I went from a 420LF to a 450Th and even on an 11tooth pinion the power improvement was noticeably. Supposedly on a 13tooth its killer if your batteries can feed it the amps.

hey there spockie - the 450 th is a sweet motor. Has both torque and kv. I had one once, but my Align 25A ESC decided to produce some interesting smoke mid flight and took my motor along with it.
Anyway, my dream motor is the NEU 1107-2Y. You can see the review at Trextuning supertest here: http://www.trextuning.com/4s-supertest.php
But at that price -- well, I'll have to do some serious economical aerobatics to get it. 120 dollars!!!!

I HAVE A DREAM....

Ya, 450th is a current sucker. You not only need a good Lipo to supply but also a good ESC to support.
I smoked my 30A ESC and it was not even flying. What you guys think about the quak 33A to support it.
