Well, that's my helis' roots. The brand new out of the box 36 spooled up nicely, if only for the tail gyro control - which has yet to be solved (another thread starter.... ? ):

Cheers guys and good luck!

omg you are the god of mods, this helicopter sounds like it could fly way better than a trex now and it looks great. I will start doing weight loss mods on my helicopter never thought it would give more flight time, well mine is a raptor g2 its the same walkera 36 but different color lloks way better yellow and black. well im a starter so all i did was carbon main blades hs55hitech servostwo main s75 eflight for tail and the bottom one is stock changed to align landing skids 11.1 lipo 1300 or sumthing dont know if its good but better than stock, and carbon tail boom but recemtly its been moving to the left a bit i know the gyro is supposed to make the tail counter rotate but its doing a bad job i have to give constant right direction to the tail so maybe its the gyro what would you recomend and that is not so expensive too. well anyways your mods are great and the helicopter looks great really like that red canoply want to make one just like it and you have skills man i would never breat stuff and put thye together but u got skills. great work and keep giving mods.

drtmind01, thanks for the support. I don't know if its as good as a Trex, as I don't have one, but hey, its great for me.
There isn't much more to mod on this bird - I've changed everything already. But there is one simple mod that blew my mind - or flying - away yesterday. Will post pics tomorrow as I do more tests. Its simple, but maaaaaaaaaaaan.......... changed my heli's flying attitude by a ton!!

Go fly and good luck!

For the life of me, I cannot tract back the guy who posted using servo Gromets to replace the 'O-rings' as head dampers - but who ever he is, I say THANK YOU!

My O-rings just don't last. So I was looking for alternatives, and this guy proposed servo gromets. Lots of other materials have been proposed, like this one from Readyheli:

http://www.readyheli.com/TREX_450_SE_Head_Dampener_Upgrade_p/rh-0724.htm

But I found using servo gromets to be fantastic!

I've never experienced my heli flying so stable as after I've used these as my O-rings.

I think, the trick to this mod is using very very large washers to hold the gromets in place. I used the spacers previously used on my heli's tail rotor grips - just drilled a bigger how to accomodate the Align feathering shaft:

The large washers gives a much larger area of support for the blade grips, unlike the stock spacers. The stock spacers due to their small diameter 'ate' into the original o-rings, resulting in their short life span.

The large spacers also compresses the gromets not only on the 'inside' of the T-head, but also on the outside - which increases the 'dampening' area. This translates to a very well supported feathering shaft and rotor blade = stable flight!

A cheap and easy mod, thats changed my heli's attitude in 10 minutes!

Now GO FLY!

drtmind01: If you get the Align gear (11 T and 12 T) they should mesh perfecty with the stock #36 main gear. Make sure you mesh them correctly. I usually have about 0.3 mm space between the two gears. You can also put two pieces of paper (thickness) as a spacer in between the two gears - just run the two gears with the paper in between, then tighted the motor mounting screws.
If you mesh the two gears too tight, you will overheat your motor, and may strip the main gear.
If you mesh the two gears too far apart, there will be a lot of gear 'play', vibration, and may also result in the main gear stripping.

If you get it just right, when you turn this outrunner motor, it will move smoothly, without much force.

Take your time. You're suppose to be having fun.

Good luck.

johnchu_hk, I did all these changes in view of improving the heli's flying. When I first flew it in March this year, I found too many weak points - plastic just cannot withstand this kind of load. And thats the other reason to mod - long term durability.
e.g. the main stock bearing is just too small IMHO. One #36 pilot who does 3D flying have to change his main bearing every 3 weeks!! Whereas the T-rex bearing is 30 % larger and is designed to withstand this kind of torque and punishment. It has lasted me now for 4 months with no sign of wear. Then again I don't do 3D.

Flying wise, its great!! Its not 'heavy' at all. At 700 grams, its well within the acceptable mini heli weight. The larger size gives it stability. This bird is really easy to fly!

Finally the mods I put up here can be challenging for sure. If I posted all the 'wrong' upgrades that I did along the way, this thread would be 50 pages long.
But when I see my bird fly smooth like its on rails, its worth it.

My 'hybrid' bird is more or less done now. Probably small small upgrades along the way, but no more major changes. Unless of course I build a carbon fibre frame...

Anyway.... to have an ultimate #36 bird, I need the ultimate power supply. The crap charger and lipo that came with the stock #36 was thrown out long ago. I used other chargers since then, but nothing compares to my most recent acquisition - the Thunder Power 1010C charger and TP 210 ballancer. Fantastic!!

This charger and ballancer is designed for 10 cell charging.
But the set is only for 3S, 4 to 5S, and 5S + 5S charging.
There is no 3S + 3S + 3S charging! And so, there lies my domain... to mod this charger so that is can accept 3S + 3S + 3S lipo batteries!

The reason to charge 3S + 3S + 3S on one charger and one ballancer is that, theoratically, I should then be able to fly ALL DAY!! More on that later.

Information to do this mod came from RCGroups at this thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=456071
But there were shortcomings to the diagrams given, which NEARLY resulted in disaster for me.
