Hi everyone, I posted this on another forum. Just like to share it here as well. I've had the #36 bird a while now. And decided to Mod it to the MAX as I've got ample time (bored). I found that this bird is great for modelling work as the plastic frame can easily be altered and improvements done everywhere. If you've given up on the bird, maybe here you'll find some interest to do something about it. If you've got one that you've also mod-ed beyond recognition, please put your great works here! These are the list of things I didn't like about the #36: 1) Crappy electronics (RTF Version) 2) Non adjustable tail boom 3) Too skittish (need to tame the beast) 4) Gear mashing between main gear and tail pully not good due to bendable plastic frame 5) Smaller main gear bearing compared to the T-Rex - won't last long. 6) Non adjustable fly bar weights 7) Smaller main gear compared to the T - Rex 8) Main gear one way bearing always slipping in the plastic main gear housing 9) Didn't like the small canopy 10) Didn't like the plastic tail unit 11) Everything else. The only thing I liked about the #36 was the main gear shaft - much better than the shogun main gear shaft. So with this list - I got busy!

First off, I wanted to deal with the non adjustable tail boom. J-Ken tried to solve it this way: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=408112 I decided to try a simpler way, using tail servo holders (http://www.helidirect.com/product_i...roducts_id=1242). With this plastic clamp in place and using the hirobo rod / nut 'clamp', I could precisely control the placement of the tail boom. I found this critical in my later mods.

The #36 has this nasty problem of the tail drive pully eating up the pin that holds it to the shaft. This results in the shaft spinning as you trottle up, but the pully doesn't - causing your tail to go into a stupid uncontrolled anti-clockwise spin. After I saw the DF60 re-design by walkera, where the tail drive pully is placed directly onto the main gear, I decided to go with that set up. The best value for money was to buy this Shogun kit, find xmseller (Jeff) (http://cgi.ebay.com/zoom-zap-shogun-400-CNC-6061-32-T-pully_W0QQitemZ6063234069QQihZ009QQcategoryZ2563QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem). Obviously the stock belt would not fit into this new set up. The belt that came with the shogun conversion was not nearly long enough to do the job either. I looked high and low for a belt of suitable lenght, and found Econobelt.com: http://www.econobelt.com/Q460/RFQ/TBelt/02.htm They advised me to get this belt from their stocks: QB-MXL01888-012. But at USD 25, including shipping, I thought it was a bit too steep. So I decided to risk it and mod the belt itself. I bought a new Align belt and joined it with my old belt. By the way, the Align belts ROCK! They are shiney, smooth and silky - unlike the cheap looking walkera / shogun belt.... http://pinnaclemodel.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=197

Here's how I joined the belts together (please remember that this is NOT A REPAIR JOB): 1) Using very sharp blade, cut (!!) the belts to be joined at an angled slant like this: [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/aa6.jpg[/IMG] I found it best if I can get 11 of the belt 'bars' within the cut area - this will give the maximum surface area to glue. In the above picture, I immobilize the belt using two fine saw blades (very straight!). This was part of the glue-ing preparation.

2) Put the two belts together, so that they are joined / squized tight by the saw blade. This is the final product (approximately 8cm longer than stock). With the plastic clamp and frame grip (using hirobo rods) I could maximize my tail boom 'extension'.

This was my set up after the tail boom /belt extension and new tail drive pully: [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/FullyBlinged1.jpg[/IMG] It flew with very much less vibration, less noise and better tail response. That iritating tail wag when using my Futaba 401 gyro is gone. [:D] However (!!), I do make it a point to fly more carefully with this set up. Flying a joined belt on grass, or rocky areas would not be a good idea. I now fly only on cemented or asphalted grounds. I've had my tail get caught on small stones / earth after this mod with no ill effect (apart for the ugly looking tail blade), but it never hurts to be careful!

I never liked the stock plastic elevator crank set: [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/11_1.jpg[/IMG] I found that they could flex when both eleron and elevator was applied at the same time. So I decided to install the metal shogun version. After buying it, to my horror it didn't fit at all!! The crank set as it came (seller noted [&o]): [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/yank.jpg[/IMG] I've had to grind away the middle part, fix a pin through the shaft and housing (using EDM Laser machine to make the 0.9 mm hole): [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/A2.jpg[/IMG] [IMG]http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/borneobear/A.jpg[/IMG] It fitted nicely after these kind-of 'major' mods.

I've had to (actually wanted to) add bearings to the frame (again) to support the new crank set. It was just a case of drilling the hole and pushing the bearings in. The bearings never came off during flights as the amount of movement involved is minimal.
