I am not trying to start a war here. Please realized that almost all our first plane won't be pretty. This is what i did to my 10 years old son's supercub about a year ago. I just removed the original white plastic firewall, and epoxy a 3 layer plywood on the firewall area, mount a hobby king 480 motor, using 1047 soft prop. Don't worry about the cowl. It just break too easy. so we never have the cowl on after the 480 motor was installed. try to mount the motor point down and to the right. compare/ measure the original stock mount. just trying to get the same angle of the down thrust thing( don't know the exact name for it) 30AMP ESC is what we have. you can still use 1300mah 3s lipo. flight time is about 5-6 minutes.

we also cut the aileron on the wing. so more control on the turn.

for landing gear, this is the best part. get a 2 litre soda bottle, cut it half , throw away the bottle bottom, tape it at the front belly section and that is your landing gear. ( no more wheels) you have to hand launch. Just hold the plane about 25 -30degree pointing up, with right hand straight above your head( assume your throttle is left side). just give it a half throttle, see if plane trying to pull from your hand. then another 1/4 throttle ( so total 3/4 throttle) and just let go ur bird. it will pull off from your hand. no need to really throw the bird out.( stock motor can't do this at all.) PLEASE MAKE SURE MOTOR, prop is tightly attached , do you preflight check list before hand launch.

My goal for this supercub is to get my son learn to use the control sticks while plane is in air. Try to eliminate the repair time and go out fly. I know this bird is not pretty in looking, but it got him flying after a month of beating it up.

when ready for landing, just two to three click above stop throttle ( about 1/8 throttle) let the bird glide in for belly landing. make sure it is as level as possible. bring some extra prop when go flying.

learn to fly is about practice and practice. just make sure you don't lost orientation when in sky. keep making right turns or keep making left turns when u first started. try to practice to turn at almost same spot in the field. and always flying upwind ( meaning the wing is really pushing your plane backwards).

good luck and enjoy the new hobby.

You are right, learning to fly is about practice, but, I completely disagree with you on the landing gear. You learn practically nothing about landing  when you belly land an RC plane. Landing is a technique that is learned when you attempt to land on landing gear. I hope that you took the dihedral out of the wing when you added ailerons. Ailerons and lots of dihedral don't play very well. The HZ Super Cub was my second airplane after the HZ Firebird Stratos. I never belly landed either as I added the LG on the FB Stratos straight off. BTW - I never crashed my Super Cub and I'm not so sure that adding ailerons helps in turning her. My SC (which I still fly) has no issues turning with rudder only on the right stick. Even though my SC is my only 3 channel plane now, I still fly her because of its relaxing flying habits. She is about the easiest plane to land that I have.

Just remember the line is "Build it, Fly it Crash it". The trick is to avoid the last part as long as possible. FYI the really important part is to have the wings level when checking out the center of gravity. If anything a little nose down is much better than nose up. Good luck.

Nice - very good for a first flight!

When flying in wind, you should stand at the downwind end of the field and keep the airplane upwind of you all the time - in strong winds if the plane gets too far downwind of you it's easy to get into trouble and have the plane get away from you. Also, try to take off and land directly into the wind - it makes things a lot easier.

Another thing to think about when positioning yourself on the field (doesn't look like it was a problem in your example... or maybe you did it on purpose... but it's something that a lot of people never think about) is to stand at the end/corner of the field where the sun is at your back. That way the plane is never flying by the sun and you can see it better for the entire flight - there's no "blind areas" of the field.

I predict that it won't be long before you're cutting ailerons into those wings!

Boy, you did a great job on your first flight! On the flying toward you issue one of our senior members gave me a hint. Think in terms of proping up the low wing to stop a turn. In short it will be wings level as the plane flys toward you. It's also a good to have the wings level on landing, keeps the wings from getting banked up.

Man I never noticed how windy it is here. Took the plane out again today in 15 mph wind and it was no fun! Cant wait for a calm day!!
