Hi gang- I am sure the answer to my question is in here some where but I cannot find it.

Down in AZ when I learned to fly (many years ago) we used to add Sig Castor oil to the fuel to help the engines run cooler. With the higher boiling point than the synthetic, castor oil protected much better. The fuel was so thick it was difficult to fill the fuel tanks yet the engines loved it! On the downside the engines looked really bad. Well, I am breaking in a new 4 stroke (Magnum .91) and they recommend using a fuel with a synthetic/cator mix and 10% nitro. Well I should have read the instructions before I bought the fuel! I wound up with a 2/4 stroke fuel with 15% nitro and 100% synthetic. I still have some castor oil and was wondering how much castor oil do I add to keep the engine happy? Will the extra 5% nitro make a big difference on the break-in?

Oh yeah, I am now up in the area of 12,000 lakes so it does not usually get hot enough to melt your foam tires to the runway after 11 in the morning!

My Magnum 52 four stroke called for 20% cator an 10% nitro for break-in. I couldn't find anything at first other than 17% castor/synthetic mix with 10% Nitro. I just went down to the drug store and bought a 10oz bottle of castor and added some to the mix. Not very scientific, but the engine runs well. It flew the first time Sat and ran very well. This is on a different fuel, but the idle is the same. I'm still running way rich as the engine only has about a pint and a half through it.

One point, I seem to remember that all synthetic oils will not mix with castor. There was a thread on mixing your own fuel and someone mentioned that. You may want to contact the fuel manufacture and see if the synthetic is compatable with castor.

The 15% nitro will not hurt a thing in your new engine. If you want to add some castor to it then do so to make it a castor synthetic blend. Add about 1.5 ounces for every percentage point you want added. For instance, if you want about 4% castor in the mix, add about 6 ounces of castor.
4% castor in a fuel is more than enough for a four stroke engine to gain the benefit castor has to offer.

Any castor oil will blend with any synthetic currently used in model engine glow fuel.

I run Omega 4stroke 15nitro it has 17% oil and a 50/50 mix of castor/syn
in both my Magnum 4strokes and they run great I never tinker with the settings just a quick tach check before the first flight to be sure the hs needle didn't get bumped and I fly all day trouble free
Now my son-in-law of the younger syn has to be better genaration insists on running all syn and does his share of whinning about how hos engine runs
