Tom.....Good idea, didn't think of that. With the size and weight of the plane (30-33 lbs is what we're shooting for), there's bound to be a pretty strong side load at times.

Looking very good! I really like the dowel idea as well.
I found a product that may be of some interest. It is called Modern Masters paint. This paint allows you to recreate metal on any surface. Well I picked up the Iron paint and they sell an activater that makes it rust. This is the answer for scale exhausts as it is actually rust! It looks very good and I will post some pics later as I am in a hurry now.

VG.......That paint sounds very interesting, let us know how it works out.

OK, the fuselage is pretty well along, it's sunny outside (although a little cool) and it just begs to hang some stuff on it for a Photo opt..........So I did [sm=biggrin.gif]
Photo's to follow.

The engine is just a little tight, so will need to do a little trimming on both sides. Need to go back about another 1/4". The heads just touch.

Will be working on lining up the landing gear struts this evening.
Glenn was going to use Kevlar for the fuselage wire bracing, but couldn't find the right diameter so opted for steel cable instead, its about .032".
Glenn has also gotten the design portion about done and is cutting parts for the kits. The kit now is at almost 1400 parts.
He will also include in the kit an ammo box, fuel guage, seat, and wind screen. As with all Glenn's kits It's loaded with all kinds of Hardware.

Ok, time to give this pretty gal a set of legs.
Here you see how the strut is formed on the lower end, flattened, bent to the correct angle, notched to fit around the sub wing spar and three holes each for 4-40 bolts.

Here's one side fitted in place. Also bolted with the front strut is the bracket to anchor the gear bracing cable.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/20/2007 9:44 PM)

The top end you will JB Weld the prebent music wire in place.

How you accomplish this is first push a cotton ball (provided) down into the strut to about a far as the music wire will go. (This way you won't be filling the whole strut full of JB Weld).

Next just mix up a batch and start filling the struts to almost full. Being kind of thick you have to work it down a little, I used a toothpick. It will settle some on it's own if you let it set a couple minutes.

It has about a 4-6 hour setup time so you have plenty of time to work with it.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/20/2007 9:58 PM)

When I dry fitted it yesterday I made up some temporary stands to hold the fuse. at the correct level.
You want the sub wing spar square with the table and useing the top longerons (which are straight from the front to about the cockpit area) you want this area level. You can measure from the table up or use a level, whichever you prefer. I do both.
You also want to make sure the gear is square with the fuselage, I measured from the spar to the back of the fuselage, both sides.

When satisfied that everything is square and level I then tighteded up the bolts on the lower end and the J-bolts on top.
Ran some tape ahound the top of the struts to to hold the music wire in the center till everything sets.
Again checked for squareness and level a couple more times just to be sure.
Will let it set and cure over night.

Deljon,

That's a slick use of JB Weld. Is that a fairly common practice?

And forgive me if I missed it, but did the dowels come with the kit, or are they aftermarket? What kind of wood?

Between this and TKFokker's DVIII build, it's been fun around here lately. Thanks for sharing the build, and keep up of the good work.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

flyingrazor -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/21/2007 4:13 AM)

Hey Del... Your struts look good and your description and procedure are right on. No real easy way to apply the JB Weld but tooth picks or a stick seem to work fine. You will chamfer the strut ends a wee-bit and might have to touch up the JB Weld a little but it will be rock strong.

Bruno - Yes, it is a great time for Fokkers right now; between Tommy's D8 and Del's Dr1 it's Fokker madness. You will be able to order this kit with dowels or square longerons; basically, have it your way. The price is the same, just some parts are laser cut a little different so they can mate better either to round or square longerons. Personally, I like the dowels but most builders still desire the square longerons.

- Glenn

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/21/2007 3:53 PM)

Bruno.....The JB Weld is a very neat way of doing the landing gear. As far as I know, Glenn is the only one that does the gear that way. Just want to make sure that your mateing parts are clean and free of oil.
A little something extra that I do is grind little notches in the music wire and make some scratches on the inside of the alum. tubeing, probably isn't needed but IMHO gives the JB Weld a little something extra to lock onto.

For those that opt for the dowel frameing I suggest that you go to Lowes or Home Depot and get four 48" long hardwood dowels. They're only about $.80 apiece and you elimate the need to splice the longerons. They are roughly 45" long.
The reason Glenn doesn't provide the 48" ones as I understand it is a shipping cost thing. I guess just by adding a foot to the length of the box it costs a whole bunch more. Many times more than the cost of the dowels.

Hey Bruno, you don't live too far from Hamilton, if you're ever in the area, call and drop in and say howdy.

Glen and Del,

Thanks for the info on the JB Weld and Dowels.

"Hey Bruno, you don't live too far from Hamilton, if you're ever in the area, call and drop in and say howdy. "

Will do. And same to you. I'm heading in the WWI scale direction with this hobby. It'd be great to see how you do things.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/22/2007 8:12 PM)

Sounds like a plan Frank, got any Dawn Patrols in your area??

Next shot showes the bottom wing mount blocks.I located them by measureing from the plans. Second shot is of the of the wing center section webbing. If you measured right the holes will line up. Another on for the bottom, they are made of 1/16" ply, so should make for a very strong wing .

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/22/2007 8:56 PM)

A small change that needed to be made in the lower wing saddle. You'll notice in Posts222 & 234 that the notches for the wing is squared off, a nice slip fit for the spar.
The trouble with that is the inner ply nose ribs must be set at an angle to clear the landing gear struts. Because of the strut angle the wing can not be lifted straight out, the ribs hit the struts.

In looking at drawings and pictures of the fuselage frame, noticed that the wing saddle had a slight angle forward and a little more aft. So I cut to match.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/22/2007 9:02 PM)

Now when you unbolt the wing, just lift it slightly, rotate the back of the wing forward and it comes right out. Just like the big boys I would imagine.

The plans and laser cut parts will reflect this change in the kit.
That's why we build prototypes to find and fix little things like this.

None that I'm aware of. There is supposed to be a warbird event at my club in June. But I don't know the particulars. I'll get back to you on that. Otherwise I'm looking forward to the Rendevous in Dayton this fall.

WinterHawke -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/23/2007 6:10 PM)

A new Windsock Special book has been released!

Most everybody is probably way ahead of me on this, but a new Windsock Dataspecial has been release, titled "FOKKER DR.I JAGDSTAFFELN", by Greg Van Wyngarden:

http://www.windsockdatafilespecials.co.uk/ger.html

And it's being listed as well at Byrd Aviation Books for those of us in the U.S.:

http://www.byrdaviationbooks.com/CurrentMonth_pg1.htm

This one looks really good!!!

Best regards,

Lee

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/23/2007 9:59 PM)

Hey Lee, I seen that, will be getting one on order.

Next we have the mounting blocks (part 216) for the middle wing, the incidence is already built into it. Lay out the location and drill your holes. As in the lower wing, line up the mounting blocks (part 46) inside the wing spar and a bolt goes through the spar blocks the mounting blocks, wing platform in to a mounting rail in the fuselage.
I just tacked the blocks (216) to the platform till the wing is all lined up. If you need to adjust you can either open up or slot the hole in the mounting block (216) so you can position it where it needs to be.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/23/2007 10:06 PM)

Here you can see that by removing four bolts the whole platform, mid wing ,when finished the top wing and hood area will lift straight up and off for easy transport.

Where I have the blue tape is where the cabane struts for the top wing will anchor.

Del! Slow down! I can't keep up :D

I am bogged down with my wings.

WinterHawke -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/24/2007 4:16 AM)

von Delby,

I agree with David – I too can hardly keep up (heck, who am I kidding, I’d lose a footrace with Rip Van Winkle!)!!! [sm=red_smile.gif]

But a very good point, indeed – this beautiful bird IS going together very quickly, indeed! When you consider that this is the prototype, it’s a nice credit to both your building skills and Glenn’s engineering that it’s turning out so nice.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing your progress in person, and I’m really looking to seeing the display at Toledo - I have a feeling that’s going to be one crowded booth!! [sm=wink_smile.gif]

Keep up the very fine work!!

‘til later,

Lee

Hey Del... Looks like the parts are fitting pretty nice. How do you like the hole sizes in the plywood parts C1-4 ? I am working on getting your parts rounded up tomorrow; which will include the cabane struts, ailerons and other goodies. Then I am off to California for several days. We have been stuffing the kit boxes now... a lot of parts... fun for all involved [;)]

vertical grimmace -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/25/2007 2:23 AM)

Very nice work! I am now finished with my BUSA DVII. It took me 1.5 years but now I can move on to something else. I think I will have to get one of Glenn's kits!
Something I have discovered is a new bungee material. After trying rubber bands and cloth covered bungee (which I have not been happy with either) I am going to try rubber o-rings. I have a hardware store that carries them in many sizes and I have just installed them on my DR1 and DVII. You can adjust the tension by adding or subtracting the number. I only have one on the tripe and 2 on the DVII. My DR1 weighs 14lbs and the DVII 22lbs.
After all of that work I have to admit I am in no hurry to do the test flight. I think I might wait until I can get a Spektrum module as radio interferance has me worried. Especially with my radio so close to the engine. The good news is my balance came out very close and I do not think I need nose weight. At the CG I am just slightly nose high.

Prop Nut -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (3/25/2007 2:28 AM)

My DVII glitched often, real quick little ones but I never did get it figured out. I finally purchased a PCM for it.
