Hi Del,

It really looks as though a good time was had by all. The model looks great fully assembeld.....One question.....how tall is the 1/3rd scale DR-1 from the bottom of the wheels to the top of the top wing? Looks like a pretty good sized model....

Evening Randy, yes we had a great time, wish you could have made it.
It stands roughly 38" high, I'm 5'9" and it's about waist high on me.
what are you up to these days??

Hi Del,

Mostly I've been trying to keep up with the models I already have.....built a couple of rubber powered indoor models this last winter (is it over yet?).....I've got 5 assembled biplanes hanging from the ceiling in the garage.....I need to thin them out a bit to make room for another of Glenn's kits.......The 1/3rd Dr-1 is pretty large....around a 94" top wing is it ?? But maybe the 1/4 scale this Fall/Winter....The Pfaltz D-IIIa sounds neat though....

I'm enjoying your build and the Hanriot Mark is building....There must be more Hanriots and DR-1's out there somewhere...

Randy

Randy the top wing is 96", it's probably going to come in around 28-30 lbs. I think the 1/4 is about 72" at about 14-15 lbs. Either one is a good choice. Lot of guys building the DVI.
Kind of took the day off to rest up from the long weekend and will get back at it tomorrow. I have some pictures of the ailerons and struts to post.

Hi Del,
The build looks great it looks like you got ever thing done for the show. The plane looks great sitting there in Glenn’s both to really did a great job. I love all the detail that you are putting in to it. With the 1/3 scale you can really see you fine craftsmanship you have done.
I think the 1/4 scale Pfaltz will be my next kit that do. The 1/3 is just to be for my workshop and storage area. Randy we will have to do a build together of the Pfaltz sort of an west cost meets east coast combo

BobH........It was a really fun weekend, man I talked to a bunch of people.
Mark........Great idea, you and Randy doing a East and West build at the same time. Glenn changed his plans, he's going to do the 1/4 scale Pfaltz first and planning on having it for spring of 2008.

OK, back to the build, will try to catch up with what I had finished for the show. Showed the aileron parts in post #270 I think. The leading edge is 5/16" dowel and must be tapered down to 1/8" at the outboard end. The trailing edge is 1/16" ply with 1/64"x 1/4" carbon fiber strip laminated to the top of it. It's a little thin back there so a little extra strength is in order.
The tip is 1/8" alum. tubing with another tube slid inside for a little extra strength.

Hinges and horn must be slid on the LE to the correct bay before before glued to the ribs.

You can see the carbon fiber on the TE also.

Hello Del,
It was a joy talking to you and Glen at the show. (I am the guy who bought the dowel version first thing on Friday morning. I am really happy that I picked it up. As I mantioned i have a BUSA Noop 17/23 (probably Boris Gruber's mount, with the famous BOB on the fuse) on the table and once finished I will start the Dr1.

Wow, this thing is big. I saw it at the show, but after gettign back to my hotel on Friday, and unrolling the beautiful plans, it really hiy home.I may need to re-organise my shop a little so I can fit hte wing on one table.

I look forward to the completion of this, and really look forward to the painting, I would love to do the streaking, but will have to practice first. I hav a ton ofquestions, but will hold off on most of them for now, as they may get answered in the future posts.

Anyway, I need to send a note to Glen, and am in the process of buttering up my wife to let me get out to Dawn Patrol this year.

Thanks dave, very much enjoyed talking to you and everyone, it was a great weekend.

Ok, the reason I haven't posted for a while, last week on my regular heart doctor visit some problems came to the forefront. This past Tuesday morning I had quadruple bypass. I am progressing very nicely, was able to come home yesterday. Miss Mary will be handling the nursing responsiblities.
Just need to take it easy for a while and gradually get back into the swing of things.
Having said all that I have some pictures of some things that I did before Toledo that I can post and will do so over the weekend.

Oh jeesh Deljon! I hope you're feeling ok. My brother's father-in-law had a quadrupple bypass in his 70's. After some recuperation he felt like a new man. He even took his wife on a cruise through the Panama Canal, then Alaska later that same year. He's in his 80's now, and spunky as ever. I hope you have the same results. Do what the Doc's say. We can wait for the DR1.

Hi DEl--sorry to learn about your operation!--You will be feeling a hell of a lot better from now on!-All my friends who had multi- bypasses are back to normal --just stick to what the doctors tell you--Congratulations on a very good display at Toledo-the DR1 is a very impressive machine at 1/3 scale--My DVI is currently ready for covering, but I had to stop working on it due to an unscheduled dead stick outlanding of my only operational other model, the 37% Baby Ace-A viciuos fence jumped up on touch down and did quite a lot of damage, should be fixed in about 3 weeks,{I hope!} cheer up and all the very best wishes for a speedy recovery !--regards JO-GO

Thanks all, yes I'll be doing exactly what the Doctor tells me. In fact I'm doing extremely well.
Ok, getting back into the swing of things, wanted to touch on a couple things I did before I went to Toledo.
I showed you earlier how I bent the inner wing strut brackets. These are held on by nine alum. rivets.

To ping the rivets I used a concaved punch or "nail set". The rivets are very soft and the first couple I did kind of just expanded the rivet inside the hardwood strut. It was tight but didn't like it, so next I just bent the end of the rivet over to the side just a little, then when I used the punch it mushrooned very nicely.

Next used a small ball ping hammer and formed the bracket end around the pin. Also took the safety pins that Glenn provided and modified tahem to look more like the scale spring clip.

Before I started pulling the wings apart to finish them, I wanted to make sure that when I put it all back together I'd get it back in proper alignment without having to do a lot of measureing again. So I drilled holes at the end of the music wires and glued in dowels to act as stops.

Did that on all four places.

Del,

I am glad your feeling better.I am sorry to hear about your operation. I hope you get well fast. You have to be feeling better because there is no stress in building WW
I Aeroplanes I will be getting this kit in the next batch. I first need to thin out my current kits, BUSA 1/4 tripe, GTM D6 and Mick Reeves 1/4 pup. I am doing to much at once, cant kep anything striaght. I will be bulding the 1/3 D6 first. Cant wait to get my hands on it though!!!

Keep the build coming but get well first!

glen b. you will enjoy this kit as you will the D6, in fact the tail feathers and fuselage are almost identical.

Going to put the wing tips on the top wing next. The tip is 1/8 ply with the grain span wise so they are very flexable.
The gussets are all laser cut 1/8 balsa. They are all the same size so some will need to be trimmed a little.

I made a template to locate the tip easier.

Tacked the tip in place as well as the top gussets, had to trim down the aft one. Removed the template and trimmed and tacked the bottom gussets, looked good so glued all in place with thick CA.

Del,
Glad to hear you're feeling better!
It looks like you haven't gotten to this point yet, so here goes.I don't know if the plans have changed from the 1/4 scale version but this regards the top deck in front of the mid wing. As shown on the plans the second (or rear) former of the top deck is behind the leading edge of the mid wing. I moved that former to slightly in front of the leading edge so that the panel on the mid wing could wrap around the leading edge and then the top deck panel on the fuse will butt up against the mid wing center panel. I feel it is easier to do this way and more scale. I hope this makes sense and again, if this has been changed, kindly disregard this info.

J......That area Glenn is still in working out the details, plan is to have a five piece alum. hood like the real one. So I guess he will adjust the formers accordingly.

Ok, got the other wing tip done and going on the the ailerons. Located each hinge on the LE dowel and pinned the locking collar on each side of the hinge.
Glenn provides a piece of alum. tube that you cut to the correct length. The screw holding the hinge goes through this tube so you don't squeeze the hinge ends together.

Also needed to put a small wood spacer between the tube and TE. This keeps the the hinge from sliding out of alignment.

Next locate on the TE where the control horn will be. Then notch out clearance for the horn to move freely. (That area has been doubled for strength).

Put it back together, clearance looks good, plenty of travel. Need an inch each way.

Looks good, now to do the other one while I'm on a roll.

Del,

Like all of us, glad to hear you're on the mend - it was good talking to you this afternoon!

I love that last picture of the upper wing with the aileron detail - those thin aileron balance horns are a signature visual point of the triplane, and it looks like Glenn has it nailed.

Keep the pictures coming - we're all looking forward to the updates!!

All the best,

Lee
