Hey Del, I have to say this is an awesome bird. I'll be at Dawn Patrol (once again, I can't wait). I'm sorry I missed the 169th's fly in this year, I would have loved to see the Dr1. The fly in used to be held at our field in Harrison Oh. however they moved it a couple years ago. I look forward to seeing you in Dayton. Oh yeah, when I get mine will u come over and help me build her? I'm only a hop, skip and jump away. [:D]

Have a great day.
Barry

Howdy Barry........I could probably make my self available for consaltation [sm=biggrin.gif]
Will be looking for you at Dayton and if you can try to make it for a day or two at the Hoosier DP at Muncie.

John.....It wold be great if you could make it, (what else ya got to do that weekend) [sm=lol.gif]

Ok, got my servo tray mounted, for the 1/3 scale on the mounting rails I decided to add screws in addition to gluing.
(Just a little extra security)

Servo tray all installed. I do not glue my trays in, I always like to make mine removeable. Just a personal preferance.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/19/2007 12:40 PM)

Using the fishing line, the cable runs look good, so now will look for a good flexable cable to use for the permanent runs.
Talked to Glenn and he said at 1/3 scale they should be about 1/16".

Now for the tray for the fuel tank, I'm using a 24oz. I'm figuring that with my engine (Roto 70 Twin) it would fly it well at half throttle, so should get plenty of flying time per tank full.

Next will figure where to mount the throttle servo and linkage required. Lee (aka Winterhawke) made some suggestions that look pretty good.

Lee came down from the "north country" this past weekend so we decided to take the opportunity to do a photo shoot.
The management at a local golf course was kind enough to let us use the "putt & chip" practice area for the picture taking. It worked out real well.
Many thanks to John at the Twin Run Golf Course.
The tail skid pylon is what's left of the fuselage of my old Flair Dr.1. (I knew I was saving it for some reason).
I do need to carve a proper size display prop, but the 1/4 scale one is all I have at the time.
Will post some pictures soon.

Del, it looks SWEET! Looks full size .... except for the one you standing by it, or else your REALLY TALL!

Looking forward to the covering and paint job.

Thanks for sharing your build.
WF2

P.S. Would like to see a 1/3 scale D.VIII, that should be an easy kit for Glenn? [sm=lol.gif]

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/19/2007 3:09 PM)

Thanks WF2...........Glenn had talked about a 1/3 DVIII, but has some other projects ahead of it.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/22/2007 6:37 PM)

Back at it after a couple days off taking care of other things.
Got the throttle servo mounted, thought at first it was going to be a bit of a challange, but after thinking about it for a while and suggestions from Lee, it just kind of fell into place.
Mounted it off the firewall making a fairly straight run. Used ball links on both ends to compensate for any little bit of misalignment. (Only needs about 3/8 to 1/2 travel).
Works great, plenty of clearance.

Babblefish7 -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/22/2007 9:57 PM)

Del,
Are you going to have any problems with the servo being so close to the engine? I will be mounting my the same way and I was worried about interference for the engine.

Mark

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/22/2007 10:07 PM)

Hi Mark, I've mounted the throttle servo like that before without any problems. Plus will have the Spektrum 7 radio in it, so that should be extra insurance.

V2PLUS10 -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/23/2007 1:11 AM)

Hi Del,

Flew the Hanriot this last weekend in the local scale qualifier. I'm using the Spektrum AR9000 reciever with two remote recievers and a friend who's 10 year old Nieuport had flown only once before the Spektrum radio(because of unflyable 72 mhz radio problems)had a great glitch free weekend with the AR7000. I did not fly as well as last year for want of practice....lots of wind this Spring and it was a windy qualifier...got high static though at 98.25.....

The next model I build is going to have a remote reciever in one (or two) wing tips..the remote rx can be up to 36" away from the main reciever. I managed to put the HD-1 on it's nose on one landing and crunched a lower wingtip in the process....it is repaired but has scars.....I may build another wing panel this fall and there will be a remote rx in it...!!

Do you hope to fly the DR-1 at Dayton??

Randy

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/23/2007 1:32 AM)

Hey Randy........Congrads on high static score. [sm=thumbup.gif] Those winds and WW1 planes sure don't mix sometimes do they??
I'm using a second RX in the top wing, no good place to hide the aileron wires down the struts. It worked very well on my EV/DVIII.
I'm hoping to have it done for Dayton, accually I'm shooting for Muncie in Aug......We'll See.......
Glenn was supposed to get the laser cut metal parts from the vendor today, (belly pan & door and tip skid brackets). I guess the vendor did the belly pan out of the wrong thickness material, so had to do them over.
He will also be sending me the material and patterns for the alum. hood.
Also need to get started on the second BUSA Machine Gun, hate building machine guns. Those little tiny parts drive me nuts.....[sm=tongue_smile.gif]

Hi Del You are really doing a fantastic job on this project. I am also glad to hear your good and healthy again. Keep up the good work. Iam really looking forward to seeing you at the dayton event. It would be really nice if you could make it to Old Rhinebeck!!!!!! I have been very busy. Yes I have not been working on the big D-8 like I should be. There is NO way it will be done this year, Sorry, To all who would like it to be. I have a awful lot going on in the warm weather months. Plus ya can't rush a project like that. I bought a third scale D-8 yesterday from an old friend who passed away last year. I would like to talk with you about the wing color's. I want to repaint the wing. Give me a call please. Incase you lost my number here it is, 508-847-0752. Thanks Tom K.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/24/2007 11:59 PM)

Thanks Tom, good talking to you again. I'll get those colors out to you this week.
Lee and I are talking about Rhinebeck for next year.....We'll see

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/25/2007 12:15 AM)

Ok, decided to do the cable bracing this weekend. Glenn provides steel cable for this but the way I string the cables the steel wouldn't make the tight bends and then pull tight with the turnbuckles. So I used heavy fishing line the same size, much more flexable and worked fine. (My personal preferance, do what works for you best).
As you can see in the first picture (I stuck the drills in the holes to show the locations) I drilled the holes at an angle through the longeron about 1/8" apart as close to the center of the dowel as I could hold it.

Then notched out a little between the holes, just enough for clearance for the cable not to stick up above the top of the dowel.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/25/2007 12:28 AM)

The reason I do it that way for the vertical spreaders is that it helps to keep those joints good and tight. For the horizonal spreaders I just drilled through each end. Not as much stress on those joints as the vertical ones.
Laced them all up, fixed turnbuckles to the ends, turned out great. It made the whole structure stronger. Before you could get a hold of the rudder post and the whole fuselage could be twisted very easy. The wires stiffened that up up quite a bit.

Noticed that I took the turtle deck off to make lacing the top eaiser.

1bruno -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/26/2007 8:33 PM)

Del,
Looking good as always. I will have to use the turn buckles next time on mine. I did not use them on my 1/4 tripe I just pulled the kevlar tight and trued the fuse up that way and Ca'd everything so it would not come loose. I really like the way you laced them and your use of the turn buckles, what size are those? Its really cool.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/26/2007 11:27 PM)

Thanks 1Bruno, it works out pretty good, just need to safety wire them now, They're 1/3 scale. 1/4 scale would work, not much differance in size.

On the full scale all the steel tubing where the covering is stuck to, it is wrapped with strips of material and doped. This gives a better surface for the covering to adhere to. So, for the scale effect I'm doing the same thing only using Nelsons Lite Fab covering. Will have some pictures later.

Also working on an engine test stand, going to try to get some run time on the engine this weekend.

1bruno -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/27/2007 12:47 AM)

Cool, I will remember that. Hey on a different note: I am finishing my 1/4 BUSA tri plane and wanted to ask you how much pitch (i think that is the right term) do I need in the engine. I am using a Z26 for the power plant. Some say just put a few washers under the mounting brackets to do the trick but I wanted to know what you did and how you mounted your engine. I was at Rhinebeck last year but did not get a close look at your engine mount. I have my fuse built but have not mounted the engine. I'm killing myself now as I wish I had monted it before I put the fire wall on but at the time I did not know what cowl I was going to use. I have a GTM cowl and starting to put it together. I am trying to figure out how to cut the center hole correctly without screwing it up. Any suggestions??? Any way keep it up can't wait to see the plane when it is finished!

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/27/2007 12:59 AM)

GB........I think you're talking about side or down thrust. I didn't use either, mounted the the engine square with the firewall with no problems. My 1/4 scale has a OS 160 twin, swinging an 18-8 wooden prop.
I used the GTM one piece cowl on mine. Now the GTM cowl is shorter than the plastic BUSA one, so I lengthened the hood and side fairings to accomadate that. I didn't need to change the center hole.
Hope this helps.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (6/28/2007 10:23 PM)

Ok, just finished up the engine test stand. It should work fine. Using a servo driver to work the throttle.
Planning on getting a lot of run time on it this weekend.
