Del,
I hope you can forgive me for being a nit-picky fussbuget, but here goes. Shouldn't the front aluminum panel be on top of the wing saddle panel, forming a kind of truncated cone shape? Then the saddle panel wraps around the LE more and you don't need what looks like a compound curve. I hope this makes sense and again I realize I am being picky, I think you know what I think of your work.

J.......Don't mind at all, I want to get it as right as I can, Not quite sure exactly what you're refering to though. Do you know of some pictures that show it??

Womenfly2 -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/18/2007 11:41 PM)

Hope these pictures help on the rear sheet metal form. These are pictures of Fred Murrin's DR-1. Best DR-1 Replica ever built!

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/18/2007 11:47 PM)

WF2.......Yes, that helps a lot, wouldn't happen to have a shot of the fromt also???
Thanks much

Del

By the way, are you going to make lit to Dayton this year??

jtisch -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 12:06 AM)

Del,
I'm still looking for a shot of a genuine DRI that shows what I'm talking about, but for now here is a shot of the Memorial flight replica, which I no longer place 100% trust in. This is an area that doesn't show up in too many photos.

Womenfly2 -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 12:20 AM)

The front is the hardest to find a good photo of. Here is an 1/8 frontal photo of Fred's Dr.1. You can make out the front sheet metal piece. It just follows the wings leading edge and has a flange that is riveted to the tank cover. Yours is pretty close. Maybe a bit sharper curve over the leading edge and a sharper flange bend-line. Hug the wing more so-to-speak.

Can be seen better in the link .. DR-1

Post 405 shows to much of a curve more like this: DR-1.

jtisch -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 12:48 AM)

Dang, it is hard to find a good shot of this. However if you look closely at WF2's second link I think you can see how the front alum. section goes in place on top of(or over) the wing saddle plate. I hope you can see what we're talking about now? If not, I'll keep trying to find a clearer shot.

Best Regards,

J
PS: It's raining here today and I actually did some work on my 1/4 scale DRI!

FokkerAce -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 3:19 AM)

Hi, all....for this part's shape, I'd either ask the German guys that are building replicas, or trust (??) the more recent 1/32 scale models.
As far as I know, there aren't any original Dr.I's

Bruno Stachel -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 4:41 AM)

Del and jtisch,
A slightly different angle of what I believe you are discussing. I believe this is Fred Murrin's DRI at the 2005 Dayton Dawn Patrol. Hope it helps. (The second shot for identification.)

fokker fan -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 10:06 AM)

Here's a couple of pics that may or may not help. I took these at an airshow down this way earlier this year. 7 DR1 replica's in the sky at once, mighty impressive. Anyway, pic1 is of a static display in the museum where the airshow was. Pic's 2 & 3 are a couple of the flying replica's that show the area you're talking about. I've got tons of pics, but these are only ones that show this area off the best. The other 3 pics are just a couple I thought you might like.

Oh, you're doing a great job there Del. I've been lurking for some time watching progress. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished results.

Cheers
Owen

Prop Nut -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 4:11 PM)

Hey Bruno!! I am in that picture you posted! :D
I am waaaaay over by the fence looking at airplanes in flight. You can see my back and head, lol. Real big guy next to a shorter guy you can see a yellow wingtip next to my head. Not that anyone really cares, I just thought it was humorous :)

jtisch -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 4:34 PM)

A poor photo, but it does show the muzzle blast plates well. I'm still searching!

Prop Nut -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 4:42 PM)

I don't know if this helps at all...

WinterHawke -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 5:50 PM)

Hey, Del...

Found this picture over at the WW1 Modeling Website:

http://www.wwi-models.org/app/album/Acn.php?base=%2FPhotos%2FGer%2FFok_DrI%2F.&hdr=Fokker+Dr.I&picInx=8

Even though this is a museum replica, it still may help.

Also, the replica hanging upside-down up in Dayton at the Air Force Museum may help as well (don't have a photo at the moment) - A quick trip up there may help visualize what's going on!

Looking forward to seeing your progress this weekend - I'll be driving down sometime Saturday, and hope to catch up with the gang over at the GCRCC flying field.

'til later,

Lee McD

First off, let me thank everyone for their contributions. Very much appreciated.

John, I copied your pictures and lightened them up a little to get more detail. In the first picture I see what you are saying, shows up real plane.

The second two, it's really hard to tell. (I'm assuming these two are original)??

The next shot is one I took at the Air Force Museum a couple years back. (Think I'll go back and zoom in a little closer). It appears to be similiar to what I have on the model.

So......It would appear that on the repo's there is a couple differant versions. Hopefully will come up with a good clear origianal shot.

A couple shots from WF2 of Freds plane that I lightened up a little, shows up ral good.

I was aware of the piece that goes under the wing, just hadn't gotten to it yet. (One thing at a time).

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 10:20 PM)

Ok, while studying and researching on the hood, need to get back to other things also.

Tip Skids........The tip skids are hardwood like the tail skid and are kind of "scribed" onto the wood with a laser and you have to cut them out on the band or jig saw. You get the laser cut metal fittings that get bent around the skid and brass tubeing that needs shaped for the front.

You can see how I layed out and cut the tab from the tubeing. Next I put a radius the end of the skid and tapered it down to match the fitting.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 10:27 PM)

From the pictures that I've seen the skids a fairly squared off, so just rounded and smoothed the edges. Centered the fitting on the skid and lightly clamped it to the skid and just bent it around with my fingers.

You can see here that after both sides are bent, the skid fitting is a little wider than the anchor fitting. So when you tighten the bolt it just pulls in and kind of clamps onto the skid.

deljon -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/19/2007 10:32 PM)

Now if you sand the corners too much then the fitting won't tighten up on the skid, so be careful there.
Some shots of it finished and in place.

Will now take them back off and stain the skids and finish covering the bottom wing.

Del, this is a really sweet looking build.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Prop Nut, you have really good eye sight![:D]

Womenfly2 -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/22/2007 5:06 PM)

Looks really great Del. How is the sheet metal coming along?

Question: The wheels on German planes were gray in color. On the models, want type of paint is everyone using to paint the rubber/plastic wheels gray, which will not flake off i n use?

Prop Nut -> RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along (7/22/2007 5:31 PM)

WF2, does Williams brothers have 1/3rd scale wheels? They have white tires.

Thanks PN, but I have a set of black wheels and need to make them gray. I have seen gray tyres on a few scale models, just wondering what paint was being used that adheres to the rubber without flecking off.

Sorry, I assumed that you where looking for a new set, my bad. It would be good to know what paint would adhere to rubber.
