Wow, Del,

You have a real humdinger of a project going on. Glenn put it in good hands. Great work so far.

Let's see, how many parts to that kit? Hmmm!

Mark and Dale.........Thanks for the comments guys. This is going to be one fun project. I'm having fun already.
I'm planning on going to Rhinebeck this year, so where ever I'm at on the build I will bring it along.

Lee.........I put the rudder assembly on Miss Mary's food scale and it said 1 1/4 ozs. I knew it was light but had no idea it was that light.

Del

Del,
I cant wait to see how far you will have gotten when you roll into Rhinebeck, try to drag Glenn up this year with ya. Are you going to be keeping a count on all the parts that Glenn is going to send you so you know how many parts are in the kit? Can I get an up close shot of the pins on the hinge to see how held in place and rolled over at the ends? Keep the funn going.

Thanks
Mark

The second half of the elev is laminated and dried. It came out great. After looking at the plans closer I decided to set the elev aside and build the stab. Reason being, you need to have the hinge gap determined before you can trim the top part of the elev so that it lines up with the leading edge of the stab.

Mark.........Don't know at this point how many parts will be in the kit as Glenn still has parts to design.
And also it depends on how detailed he wants to get in verious areas. He is keeping track of all the parts he sends me.
Are you talking about the pins that go through the locking collars??

This is as close a shot I could get Mark. You can see both sides of the pin. I slightly mushrooned the pin, but also put a dab of thick CA on it.

Thanks Grahame, good talking to you again on Skype.

Here's most of the stab just tacked together. Since the ribs have a airfoil shape, I spaced everything up off the plans using some 1/4 square stock.(It works for me). Will check everything for squareness then add the leading edge.

Here you can see how the spar (5/16 dowel) is passed through the ribs. No cuts or splices. Also you can see a part of the leading edge which is 1/4 dowel.

Here is the almost finished stab, just need to double check all glue joints and a little touch up sanding. It is a very strong structure and weighs a whoping 3 1/2 onces.

Now back to the elevator...............Del

I got both elevator halves all layed up, came out real nice. Next you need to slide all the hinge parts and horns on the 5/16 carbon tube. As with the rudder hinge parts are located and the collars pinned. The control horns will be glued later.

Here's a close up of the center hinge.

Here's the first half of the elev. mostly tacked up. Again I spaced the parts up off the plans as the parts will not lay flat.

The first balsa lamination is notched out so all the ribs fit nicely.

Morning Del,
Just a quick question what do you use to build on? I have been using 1" poster board for easy pinning. I have found if I have 4 of them I can move from one section to another and movement of one group of part to other group while I let the glue dry or think something out.

Thanks Mark

Looks great so far keep the glue flowing.

Morning Mark,
My bench is a 10' counter top I got at Lowes set on a 2x4 frame. Shimmed everything so it is flat and level. Next I siliconed celing tile, (smooth side up) to the counter top. Works great and if the tile gets too rough, just scrape it off and put down new.
I like being able to build the big wings in one piece. I have another one 6' along the other wall and a table I use for assembly that sets in the middle of the room. (Room is about 12'x14'). I have about 2' manuvering room around the table.
Works out pretty good

Ok, the elev. is almost done. Just needs a little touchup sanding. Don't have the horns glued yet, will wait till I have the fuse. built so I can line everything up correctly.
Now with the tail group together I will make sure everything is centered then mark and drill the holes in the stab trailing edge so that the elev. hinges can be bolted on.

The elev weighs about 2 1/2 ozs., making the rudder elev. and stab. all weighing about 8 ozs. Amazingly light and very strong.

Not sure yet what I'll cover everything with. When I covered my EV I used doped linen which gave a very tight drum like finish. (Maybe I gave it too many coats of dope). I don't think I want that finish on this plane as you can see in some old photo's some waveyness and wrinkles in the fabric which tells me it was not drum tight.

How about some ideas from you guys out there. What have you used that you are happiest with??
Later

Del - I've had great results with Ceconite. I use the un-certified stuff. It bonds well and I can control the shrinking by using temperate control of my iron. No heat guns with Ceconite.

A couple shots of the tail feathers almost ready to cover.

Next in line is to frame up the sub-wing.

Hi Del,

One of the things that I liked about the Hanriot was that it was so BIG, to me at least.....it was my first 1/4 scale kit...1/3rd must be wonderful to work with.

I like to use Nelson lite-fab, it comes in colors but I always use natural and paint it...I used Warbirdcolors paint on the HD-1....excellent stuff.

One of our local scale builders uses Stits from www.stits.com it is a complete system but what keeps me from using it is that it is a solvent based system, mostly MEK....

1/3rd scale and a GTM kit to boot...what else is there??

Ok, here are the parts that make up the sub-wing assembly.

The box spar is the first to go together. Need to make sure that it all is glued up good and square.

Hey Del,

What are those weights/metal blocks that you using? They look vaguely familiar but I can't place them.

So a Triplane really has four wings??!!
