Which brings up the question, was there ever a documented tripe vs. tripe combat in WW1, and if so, did either one win?..............John

Caribefoto,

I've not read anywhere where the Sopwith Triplane and Fokker Dr.1 (or F1) Triplanes ever met in combat. The Sopwiths were nearing the end of their service lifes when the production Dr.1's first appeared, but the Fokker's combat careers were derailed a bit with the early wing failures. By the time the Fokker Dr.1 re-entered combat after the upper wings were fixed, the Sopwiths were already out of combat, I believe.

And there is no record of either prototype Fokker F1 Triplane meeting one of the Sopwiths.

Hopefully this next season the lads will rectify this little historic missed opportunity!!

Best regards,

Lee McD

Bye the bye - had a GREAT time at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol last weekend - the weathermen couldn't have missed the forecast anymore than they did - we had almost perfect flying conditions, particularly Saturday night and Sunday morning, and a whole bunch of flying was had by all.

I got to fly Del's tripe several times, and it has handling great, even through another deadstick landing in a slight crosswind. I think Del just got a bit unlucky on a gust of wind right as the plane was breaking ground - and this IS still a Fokker Triplane after all - crosswinds do NOT please it!!

Lucky Dog (aka Mike Bealmear) has posted some pictures of the action, including Del's triplane, up on the Hoosier Dawn Patrol website ( http://www.hoosierdawnpatrol.com//2008pictures/mbhdp08/ ) - go check them out at your convenience!!!

Thanks, David, for putting everything back into perspective!

ps about tripe vs tripe......the Red Baron shot one down for his 52nd victory.. however, he was flying an Albatros DIII at the time.
WinterHawke might just be correct on this one.

Cracking pics! The Handley Page and the Airco particularly appeal to me as future projects , but all are superb to see

And just when you thought you had enough photos . . . .

von Delby, I don't know what you paid Sir Percy over the HDP weekend, but there must be a Brazillion pictures of the Dr.1s maiden flight weekend posted over at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol website:

http://www.hoosierdawnpatrol.com//2008pictures/delstripe/

Quite a kick going through them all again (and remembering how fricking cold it was that day!!!)

'til later,

Lee

Thanks!

One of the better ones I think was of Del's Tripe

And I typically don't shoot enough pics of the people at these events, but couldn't resist this one of Del and Mary

Very nice, just needs my pup coming in behind for 'ze kill' (when i've got a pilot and a gun fitted it might help with the combat 'illusion')

Thanks for posting the pictures Mike, Miss Mary and the plane look mighty fine.

Alistair........Fine looking Pup.

Havn't been doing much with models lately other that getting stuff packed for a move. Mary and I just bought a 200 yr. old brick farm house on 2 1/4 acres. Lots of trees, but I think I can carve out a small grass runway.
So, once we get moved in (in about 3 wks), I got to start setting up a new workshop.
Later

Hi David,
The plan is to take down the one car garage and build at least a 2 1/2 car. But we have to get the Condo sold before we can do that.

You should have my wife come over, she built me a 2 1/2 car garage while I was in Germany. Boy was I surprised when I pulled into the driveway. She had her brothers and dad help with setting the posts and roof, most everything else she did herself.

A little off topic but I'm just finishing a Balsa USA Eindecker 90, which is not very scale. We went to London recently for my daughters birthday and visited the science museum. Imagine my surprise finding a real fokker eindecker III on the ceiling, one captured by the British in 1916. How often with these rare original aeroplanes, (a definitive source of info) do you get to see the real thing! albeit without any covering anymore. They had lots of interesting examples including an SE5a used post war for sky writing

Allistair, that is a cool picture. Do you think you could start a new thread and post all of your pictures?
