After I drilled all the holes, I took it back apart to do a little more sanding to smooth out the "turning" marks in the alum. I first used an orbital sander with 150 grit paper, then went over it again with 250 grit. After that I wet sanded it by hand with the 250 grit. It came out pretty smooth, but I think I'll go back over it with 320 grit wet sanding. Probably don't need to but will anyway.

Once I sand it again I'll reassemble using the brass brads, bending them over and lightly tapping them down. You can then clip off some of the excess if you like, then use some epoxie and go over the back side to secure all the "rivets".

I had not thought of using those little bar clamps to hold things together while drilling. I have several and will definitely use them when I get to that stage.

Dale.....I use those clamps alot. I have three differant sizes

Ok, back to the cowl, I now have all the "rivets" in, bent and epoxied.

Here it is from the front, I gave the whole thing a good wet sanding with 600 grit paper and it's ready to prime.

Del,

Looks great, as usual for you. It looks like the front plate of the cowl extends down a little further than the one that came in my 1/4 scale kit, which is an improvement. Looking at different DRIs that front cowl plate seems have have had different lengths as production went on. It is much easier to cut it down than to add more on.

Would you believe I did all the holes in my cowl with a pin vise? I was living in an apartment at the time and didn't have a drill press or electric drill then. I may not always be the brightest bulb on the X-mas tree!

Can't wait for the fuselage to start! Do you have the plans for it yet? One thing I did on my 1/4th size fuse was to replace all the cross members in the cockpit area with dowel, to better represent tubing. Perhaps you noticed from the photo over at the 'Drome.

Keep up the good work!

J

J.....MAN that is a lot of drill'n with a pin vise. It was worth it though wasn't it??
Yes, I noticed the dowels in the cockpit area. when I get the plans I'm going to do the whole fuse with dowels just as Glenn did with the DVI. It really makes the whole framework look authentic............

When you get around to it, I have some very close up photos of the cowl hold down cable connections to the firewall. They were taken of the E.V replica in Alabama, but I'm sure they are the same for the DR I.

You bet, I'm doing the rib taping now , so the cowl drilling doesn't seem so bad now.

Hi Del,just discoverd your wonderful work-I have a 1/3 fokker DVI kit on order which I shall receive in October and I am very exited about the project since it is practically identical to the DRI{fuselage and rear end}I am currently scratch building the spandau guns and I am happy sofar with the result--the barrel cooling slots required absolut concentration on the milling processafter having plotted the individual slots on paper ,and it went ok, cocking levers, top hatches and safety catches are as per fullsize funktional, what woories me a bit wher to get the right gunmetal paint --found out the original ammo dimensions { 80,6mm total length]so next week I will tackel making the casings from 4.5 mmDia brass tubing and bullets using hardwood dowling--all great fun but took me sofar oodles of hours!- But at least I won't have to worry about them once the kit is built--Glenn does fantastic work also and it is a pleasure to watch your progress! --best wishes and keep it up!-regards jo-go

Just a couple of photos from this last weekend's trip to Muncie, IN - Del brought the Dr.1 bits along with his for Show-and-Tell:

First up, a hard-at-work von Delby surveys the scene:

And Del's handiwork so far:

That is one very big cowling, y'all!!

Can't wait to see what comes next, Del!

'til later,

Lee

Dunno - probably 'cause he only got to fly eight times on Friday, and it got a bit too windy on Saturday afternoon!!! I have seen him happy at times:

He just doesn't like to be not flying - imagine that!!!

Dave, great picture of our von Delby - had a great time last weekend hanging out with everyone.

'til later,

Lee McD
