That's a really good trick...I'll have to keep that in mind. What sort of carbon fiber did you use? I'm really only familiar with CF in tube and rod form.

Hello,
I built also a GTM 1:3 DR I.

I have a engine question.

Can I fly this model with an Laser 360v?

Coming along nicely.

I beleave the Laser 360 is around 60cc's, I'm guessing that if you keep your weight
to around 30 to 32 pounds it should fly it fine.

Anyone else have an opinion???

Del if its true 3.6cid then its 58.99cc and its a four stroke, but 4 strokes are torquers and the Laser is possibly the finest mass (sort of) produced brand, I said possibly and dont want to start a fight but I agree it should fly it good, at that weight.

I just checked GTM site and he states the Laser 360 twin is sufficient.

I used some carbon fibre that was part of a woven sheet.
Just removed the pieces and wrapped them around the aluminum. Some thin CA, and it wicked in nicely.

Yes,

I had mailed to GTM and he answers me some times ago.
If the model weights under 30 lbs, there will be no problem to fly with a laser 360v.
But this is theoretical, I want to know the practical size with a laser 360v.
Does anyone fly a WWI model with this engine ( D VII , Sopwith or so )

Mick Reeves used a Laser 360v in his 1/3.6 scale Sopwith Strutter. It has a wingspan of 2.85m and weighs 12.6 kilos. He say it has "lots of power" for that size.

I heard back from Glenn and he will not be releasing the new 1/4 DR1 until sometime next year. As I had assumed he is spending all his time on the SE5a at the moment. Looks like I will start with the Balsa USA version and hopefully upgrade to the GTM kit later.

I picked up the cloth at a boat store. They sell all kinds of neat stuff.

Been plugging away at the aileron linkages. Made four pulleys using two sizes of brass tubing. Some brass plate bent around 1/4 inch tube, then soldered. Pulley is sandwiched between the brass plate. This allows the pulley to swivel to follow the wire.
I am not sure if I am happy with the outboard pulleys from home depot, on a second look, they should be fine. Will have to hook up the servos after the four other pulleys are secured and try it.

Mounted a ply plate for the 2 servo's. Drilled holes for the wire to pass through. I am happy with the way it is all turning out, lots of work to get it set up. I am also planning to run tubing for the wire, so it can be feed in after the wing is covered. I will also have 4 removable inspection hatches at all the pulley locations so I can inspect them and for routing of the cable.

More to follow as I proceed.

Finished up the aileron linkage. It turned out pretty good. Still a few minor details to work out. The operation is smooth. I like the independant ailerons, just in case I loose one, I will still have the other. Pulled the cable tight onto the servo arm, and moved the servo's back and forth, happy with the results

I am looking for a pilot for my 1/3 DR1.
Any ideas.............I do like the poseable pilots, but dont want to spend over $400.00 for a pilot.

On another note, in the process of covering the top wing, bottom is covered, just need to do the top. Will post more pics after it is covered and has two coats of polycrylic applied.

Aces of Iron have good pilots that can be painted up VERY convincingly. A friend of mine followed the directions on the web site and the finished result is as good as ANY I've ever seen.

I volunteer to be your pilot! I don't like posing, but I will if you insist. I also won't charge a penny more than $400!
I can provide flying credentials upon request.

I'm impressed with your aileron cable design. Just make sure the tubes are de-burred so not to cut cable. I assume the top and med wing will be one piece so cable is allways tensioned. I have not had any flutter issues but keep those cable preloaded with no slack.

A side note. I increasingly noticed how much the elevator deflects when lifting tail up grabbing the side of the elevator. I never liked GTM's design I think it needs more strength. I have only three bolts holding it to fuss which is ok but the elevator really needs an additional spar for more aggressive manuevers. I desided to rip off the covering and add one maybe graphite tube. It's a pain but i did see a video showing a 1/3 scale triplane going down with brokken elevator not too sure if it was a gtm model.

I was also wondering about the horizontal stab. It does seem fairly secure with the elevator leading edge being carbon fibre, and the alum stuts to support the trailing edge. I think it has adequate strength, maybe Del can add his 2 cents with regards to any issues he may have had. Del???
I have seen that video before. From looking at it, it seems that the horizontal stab was solid, and to me it looked as if it was a fuselage issue at the rear. Just my thought.

I am wondering what throws you are using valleyk on your control surfaces I can not find any reference for this.

Top wing is covered. It has 2 coats of the polycrylic. The four hatch covers are made and in position. I made these covers out of several layers of 3/4 oz glass cloth. They are secured to the wing. I like the ability to get at everything, just in case modifications are required as well to inspect the pulley system. Still need to make the opening for the top aileron cable.
Do some fake rib stitching, just to add some life to the wings. Ailerons still need to be sanded and covered. My "to do" list seems to grow and grow, but I am slowely ticking things off.
Also made the bracket for the spar inspection plate.
Overall pretty happy with the way it is turning out.

Morning Craig,

Coming along nicely, you're doing a super job.

I personally feel the the tailfeathers are adequate as designed, some guys have replaced the stab TE dowel with carbon fiber tube.
With the stab securely fixed to the fuselage and the alum. struts, it is a very strong structure. Remember the more weight
you put back there the more you have to add to the nose to balance.

On the video, I agree with Craig that the tailfeathers may not have bee attached very secure. If you do a series of stops on the video
it appears stab starts flopping back and fourth but mostly there. Hard to tell what parts flew off, maybe elev. or rudder or parts of both.

As far as the elevator deflecting some when lifting up on the edge, I think that's just the nature of fabric covered open structures, every
plane I have will do that to some degree and have never had a failure. Plus I never pick the tail up by the elevator, I always reach
under and grab the tail skid.
Having said that I know everyone has there own ideas and preferances, my advise is do what ever works best for you.

Don't remember off the top of my head what the throws are, I'll go out to the barn and check them afterwhile, (when it quits raining).
Later

Del

Ok, here are the throws I have set up, These are at High Rates, I have Low Rates set at 70%. I know some prefer to set differential, I don't.

Elevator 2" Up and Down

Ailerons 1 1/4" Up and Down

Rudder I have it full deflection both ways about 4".

Charlie, the inside dia. is 13 9/16"

Another question I have been asked a lot lately is how I got the color documontation. My color chips came
from GTM and I had them matched at Lowes. I have done the colors in both Latex and Enamel, I then hit it
with Min Wax satin poly. The big difference is the enamel takes a lot longer to dry.
Here are the Codes:

Olive for streaking: 101-12.5 , 105-1Y18 , 107-1Y9.5 , 113-7.5

Turquoise for wing & fuselage bottoms: 101-6.5 , 103-21 , 107-1.5 , 113-2Y18

Like I said I got this at Lowes but I'm sure any paint store that uses the same computer system should be able to mix it.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

How did you find the Min Wax Satin poly for a clearcoat? How is it holding up with the gasoline engine?

There are so many different types of stuff on the market, do you have a pic of the satin poly can, so I can get an idea of which type you used?
