I'M BACK GUYS
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or enjoyed the Event that you celebrate at this time.
Did you all get all the neat airplane goodies that you wished for???
Glenn's day job has eased up somewhat and is now able to devote more attention the the Real important things...........airplanes.

Well we're going to get back at it with the top wing. It will be built in "one" piece and is about 96" long.
We will start by building up two "I" beam spars front and rear, then will be connected with horizonal shear webbing top and bottom making one big, strong box spar like the full scale.

To try to keep the spars as straight as possable, I rigged up a clamping fixture to glue the parts in.
First I clamped a 1" square piece of alum. tubing, (about 4' long) close to the edge of my table. I then clamped
a 1/4 x 1 1/2 length of alum. bar stock to the back side of the sq. tubing. This worked very well for me.

Each spar section (36 inches long) is made up of 3 pcs. of 1/4 x 1/2 spruce, plus one pc. of 1/8 x 1/2 balsa.
You first laminate the 1/8 balsa to one of the spruce strip. You will need to do this on 5 pcs.

Glad to see things on the move again. That 96" single piece wing really brings home the size of this project!

The spruce strips were all pretty straight, you will always get some bow in them. Just arrange the
bowed sides so that when you clamp and glue them they come out as straight as possible.

Here you see how I layed the parts out and clamped them down. Oh, and don't forget to line
the fixture with wax paper, don't want to glue the spar to it.

I then placed several clamps down the full length. I then took a small piece of nylon block and lightly
tapped the top and bottom rail to make sure they were seated to the alum. tubing. Also did the same
thing to the webbing.
After I was sure every thing was as straight as I could get it I then ran a bead of thin CA down each
side of the webbing. Gave the CA a good time to set, unclamped it, turned it over and reclamped
everything again making sure it was seated again and CA'd the other side.
Again after the CA set, I went back over all the joints with thick CA.
Now, just four more to do.

Howdy Don.......Yes, a big wing, a big bird. For transport I have a full size van, plus I got a old pop-up
camper, gutted it and will fix it up to haul the big birds.

Ok, got the other four spars all glued up. One piece you will get the two pcs. for the spar
center sections. The center pcs. are about 18 1/2" at the wide point \ / .

I mitered the ends at a 60 degree angle to get a lot of surface for glueing.

Note that both splices on both I-beams will be in between the cabane attachment points, so
along with the shear webbing between the beams and 1/32 ply leading edge sawtooth sheeting,
it should make for a very light and strong wing.

I set my champing fixture back up for glueing the spar sections together. Also drilled some
small holes in the mateing parts for the glue to lock into.

Mixed up some epoxy and coated both parts and clamped them together snuggly.

When set, I'll do the other three joints and I'll have two finished I-beams.

Here's a rough layout of the left side of the wing. Note the laser cut ribs.

Here's the center section.

Note the two ribs to the right side of the center section are 1/8 ply. This is where the
cabane attachment location will be. A 1/4 x 1/2 piece of spruce will be glued across these
two ribs in the notch just forward the front spar. A similar piece will be glued in between the ribs
just aft the rear spar. The reason the rear block is not notched in is that the rib being thinner
there the notch would break into the edge of the spar hole and weakening those ribs.
The cross blocks is where the cabanes will be attached.

Another shot of the ribs. Also the holes that the spars slide into are sized so that is a snug fit.
The wing is now ready to start assembling but I believe I'll start that tomorrow. I told Miss Mary
that I'd take her out to dinner this evening so need to start getting ready for that.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

Here I slid all the ribs on for a dry fit, everything looked good.

With the under camber the TE of the ribs are pretty thin, so to keep from possibly breaking
these ribs I spaced the wing up so that it just clears the table top. I used 1/2" blocks seven
places under the spar beams, and clamped them down. I did not clamp them tight, just snugged
them down so that nothing would move. If all works well, it will come out nice and straight.

Starting with the center section and working to the tips I used squares to align each rib,
when satisfied I used thick CA to tack two places on each beam.

Here we have all the ribs nice and square and all tacked in place.

I will now go back and double check each rib to make sure they're square and spaced correctly.
For final glueing I like to use thin CA so that it wickes into the joint well. When set I will go
back over it all with thick CA.

That looks absolutely great! I have not had the pleasure to build a full kit by Glenn but I am doing his fabric now, installed a full cockpit kit and used his 2 piece cowl on my BUSA DR1. I may have to go after the DVI I think. We are lucky to have someone producing such products for all of us fans of WW1 aircraft. I will continue to admire this thread with great interest.

Hi Del--good to see you making progress with the DRI--looking forward to the next steps-I have my DVI wings all ready for covering and the fuselage is 7o% done - just made the seat frame from thin wall stainless steel tubing -tailskid and undercarriage is finished and the dowled framework came out very good ,looks great with the wheels temporarily attached!--I am using a Zenoah 74 cc twin and will have to make a new muffler for it ,so there is still plenty to do, the tailplanes and rudder are not even started yet,but my Spandau 08/15 guns are finished as well as the controlstick which was abit of a nightmare to make!--I am just recovering from dental surgery and have to take it easy for a while--love your work and best wishes jo-go

Next I added the 1/4" sq. balsa leading edge, will sand it to shape later.
Also nose ribs were added at four differant locations, pay attention to the
plan for the proper location. The left side location does NOT match
the right side. Has to do with the differant lengths of the saw-tooth sheeting.
The reason for the nose ribs is to give a little wider glueing surface where
the saw-tooth sheeting joints are.

Here you see the TE pcs., they're are made from 1/8 balsa to be glued in and sanded
a slight taper and radius.
For those of you that want to go pure scale (cable TE) not a problem. It will be designed
so that you can do this and I believe Glenn will offer a Mini Kit in order to do this.

What would be the downside of usong a cable trailing edge? Is it difficult to cover? It seems like it would be.

I would guess that getting the proper tention on the cable would be the most important, too loose too much swag etc.
I have not tried it, but I wouldn't think covering would present much of a problem.
How about it guys, I'm sure there's a few of you out there that has tryed it.

You're right that getting the right tension to exactly reproduce what was ultimately a random effect on the original would be a challenge and require some testing. I think it really depends on the extent to which you feel this is "museum scale" sort of effort. Personally, I'd want to be using a wire trailing edge on a model such epic proportions. But I can understand why Glenn would opt for the scalloped wooden edge for the kit.

Take a look at this picture of a DVII being constructed (in france). The cable that is the trailing edge is straight from rib to rib meaning that while not super tight it is tight enough to be straight. The dope shrinks the fabric causing the scalloped edging.

Got the TE pcs. glued in and sanded with a nice radius. Made sure that the TE piece
was flush with the bottom of the rib.

For those who will opt for the cable system, Glenn has already cut a radius in the
end of all the ribs to accept the cable.

Each splice will be backed up on the inside of the beam with a splice support
make from 1/8 X 1/2 ply. A little extra strength for the joint.

The next task was to do the TE for the aileron bays. These are also 1/4 x 1/2 spruce.
Since these pcs. needed to be tapered I set them in place making sure the bottom
of the TE was even with the bottom of the ribs. With the end of the TE against the
first ply rib, I marked the angle of the TE.
Using my trusty Great Planes power planer, it made short work of roughing in the angle.
I then glued the TE pcs. in place, clamped the wing back down then I put masking tape along
the top of each rib. Using my sanding bar with 80 grit, carefully sanded down the finished angle.

Drilled and tapped the spruce cabane attachment rails (6-32). Set the front rail
in the notches between the two ply ribs making sure the hole is in the proper place.
Used a piece of scrap ply drilling two holes on 3 3/32" center and used it to locate
the rear rail between the ply ribs.

Next I glued all the shear webbing, top and bottom except the two bays where
the fittings for the interwing struts will go.

This is how the wing looks so far, very strong and light. How light you say, glad you asked.
I put it on Miss Mary's food scale and it comes in at 1lb 12.3oz or 805g. Still quite a bit
to go on it yet but very good so far.
