Looking great, Del. I didn't until just now "get" how the two spares become one with the webbing. I have been thinking that it was a bit odd that Glenn was using a "two-spar" design.

Hi Don, yes it builds up pretty much like the full size.
Top drawing in the pic is the cross section of the box spar. Second shows
the fitting attachments to the spar and the inner wing strut detail, very scale.

I taped off the rib edges and sanded the leading edge spar to shape.

I now have three of the 1/32 ply "sawtooth" leading edge glued in place. I have the two end pcs to do yet, but must locate and bolt on the fittings for the struts first.

Del, does Glenn have a price yet on the kit (even an approximate price)? I can always dream!

BTW, great idea to tape the ribs while sanding the LE.

Don't really know what the price will be, my guess would be take the price of his 1/3 DVI
and add some for the third wing. Also depends on how much extra details he might
want to add????

I learned a long time ago to put tape on the ribs, seems like know matter how careful
you were you'd always gouge them out a little. Good ole sandpaper can help and hurt both.

Hey Del... Really doing a good job on this project. You got a nice camera and you have all the steps covered. I got mine started but I keep slowing down because I got to cut the next batch of parts for you. I like how all the parts are coming together and that the wing is not that difficult to build. From all the Fokkers I worked on, it is the simplest, in that, almost all the ribs are identical and the wings are flat. The weight seems to be in line if not on the light side... but I guess when all said is done I suspect the plane to come in around 28-30lbs. Glad to see you have a nice shop, that long table surely helps out. Have you thought about radios and servos yet ? I plan to put a servo for each aileron as shown on the plans. I guess if someone wanted to add pulleys you could. - Glenn

Hi Abufletcher - I really want to keep this kit in the $700 range. I want it to be sort-of affordable for a lot of builders. The good news is our hobby does not follow the full scale costs. As a full scale replica would cost around $120k and here you can get a 1/3 scale model under a $1000. So, we can tell our wives we're saving a lot of money and the insurance is really cheap. - Glenn

Well I have to say this build is getting me excited to get my hands on this kit. The thing with Glenn's kits is you cant have enough of them... I think I should just figure out a way to have Glenn meet my wife now and get the symantics overwith so she wont hate you this time next year and divorse me at the same time. HEHEHEHE

Del,
Looking really good! Only two more wings to go . Despite(or perhaps because of) being built with amost no balsa, I find Glenn's DRI wings to be the lightest of all my Fokkers.

Now I have to figure out how to convince my wife I need a third triplane.

Hey Glenn.......This has been a great build, just love it when a good plan comes
together. It frames up real fast. I'm real happy with the weight
on everything so far. But of course the covering, paint and engine will start to pack
the pounds on.
I do have a real good camera, but haven't quite mastered getting the lighting
right yet. Most of the pictures come out a little dark, but use the Picture It! 7.0
to lighten them up. I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to photography, but I
seem to stumble through it alright.
I have really lucked out on the shop, we have a finished walkout basement and
converted one of the bedrooms into a hobby room. That worked great till I started
going 1/3 scale. Since I have a wonderful wife that is very supportive of my hobby, she
suggested that since we don't use it much, I should take over part of the family room.
Bless her heart.
I got one of those new Specktrum radios that I will use for this plane. I will use two servos
for the ailerons like the plans show (72 oz./in. came with the radio) and a 120 oz./in. for the elev.
J........I just love building wings
Well, back down to the Fokker Factory

Here you see where the fittings for the inner wing struts will attach to
the I-beams. I inset a section of 1/8 ply on both sides of both beams.
I want a good solid area to bolt the fittings to. Once the fittings are bolted
in the rest of the shear webbing and LE ply can be added.

Next I started adding the cap strips (3/32 sq balsa). These are glued along side of the
ribs just like the full scale.
I started by tacking the strips at the LE ply, then bending long the edge of the rib tacking
as I go (thin CA). Once I did both sides of the rib, went back over the length of the rib
with the CA.
I left the strips ever so slightly above the top of the rib so when good and dry I can sand them
to the exact shape of the ribs.

Now back to the basement, a lot of them to do, top and bottom.

Hallo Del--nothing worst than not having enough room to work in!-we are both fortunate not to suffer in that way,as well as having wifes who are supportive and understand that aeromodeling is a way of life !-{ I have been married for 52 years and my workshop is big enough to hold 4 cars, but we have only 1 and the rest is fitted out with 2 benches and a medium size lathe, milling m/c ,drill press ,post grinder ect. and I just would not know how to get on without all that--just a comment regarding the scarf-joints in the spars of the DRI -I would prefer a ratio of at least 4:1{length to width}would need a bit more material but be safer--?--May the WWI scale models multiply --and thanks for your very informative buid along-- regards jo-go

My dear von Delby . . .

REALLY looking good, mein herr, I really like how it's coming together.

I was curious how the cap stripping was going to work - as with everything else so far, Glenn's engineering looks straight forward and simple to execute (heck, even I might be able to master it! ).

As a note to all, I had a chance to visit Del over the holidays, and saw first-hand just how nice the parts fit-up was on the ribs and spars - very impressive.

And on a completely separate note, there was an interesting discussion over on the Aerodrome amongst the full-scale builders concerning wire trailing edges versus solid:

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16485&page=162

Keep posting updates, Del - I'm very much looking forward to the rest of this Build! (And all of the rest here on the Universe!!).

Very best regards,

Lee McDuffee
the WinterHawke
