OK, got the four I-Beams glued up and spliced into two spars.
Care must be taken when spliceing for this wing. The wing from tip rib
to tip rib is 71 1/4". The two beams that make up the spar are 36" each
so that only allows no more that a 3/4" splice. That don't seem like a lot,
but with the ply splice supports on the inside of the beam and the spar
webbing in the center section will probably be 1/16 ply. So that should
make for a very strong joint.

As with the top wing will now square up and align each rib just tacking them
as I go. Will then recheck all the alignments and glue permanently.

Ribs all glued up and webbing glued in top and bottom.

LE and TE glued in place. The front of the two ply ribs will not be glued in place until the wing is fitted to the fuse.
Reason being they will need to be set at an angle for clearance of the landing gear. That angle will be determined when the wing is properly aliened with the fuse.

I'm sure that will be strong enough. But it seems to me that it might be preferrable to use three sticks and make two longer slices at other than the center point. For example, there could be one long piece in the center and then two shorter sections sliced on towards the wingtips.

As I said, I'm sure this will be fine but since this is the prototype it's always good to consider options for the future of the kit.

Don......I beleave Glenn's reason is a cost factor. Having the spruce sticks
milled I guess is not cheap. I think he wants to have the best quality kit
at the most reasonable price possible.
With the splice in the middle, there will be a hold down bolt on each side of
it, plus you will have the added strength of the inter wing struts.
With the ply webbing in the center section should be a very strong wing.

That sounds like a very reasonable decision. I just remembered someone mentioning this other option in a thread I started a while ago on spar splicing.

Got another box of goodies yesterday. Got the parts for the middle wing.
Started glueing up the I-beams for the spars last night. So, shouldn't take
too long to frame this one up. Construction the same as the other two, so
no need to duplicate pictures. One area of difference is the center section
where the curved cutouts are. When I get there will show that part.

The reason that I haven't totally finished framing the other wings is Glenn
is waiting to get the fittings for the inner wing struts from the vendor. These
need to be bolted to the spar before its closed up with the webbing. Same for
the tip skids.

I've heard that some are not getting the pictures when the go to the site.
I get them alright on my computer, I don't have an answer for that problem??

Del,
The build is coming along just great. Would love to see some pics of the stuff from far back to get a better idea of the size of this monster. I wish I had room for these big guys. Have you heard from Glenn when you will be getting the fuse to build? The build looks great so far keep posting.

Mark.......Can you get the pictures starting on page ONE?? These are all the ones that I've posted.
If I remember right the top wing is 96"

Should be getting the fuse. plans pretty soon, I think he's working on them now.
He's going to offer two ways to do the fuse. longerons. 5/16 square stock or 5/16 dowels.
I chose to do the dowels for a more scale appearance. If you chose the dowels, he suggests that you go to Lowes or Home Depot where you can get 4' long ones, that way you don't have to splice them.
The reason for not including the 4' dowels in the kit is it would cost more because shipping for a 4' long box would cost a whole lot more.

Whooo Hooo! Del, I am looking forward to this summer. I should have my 1/3rd scale Sopwith Tripe done by then. We can have a ball at Dayton and Muncie (a furball that is). Sir Percy says that the number of 1/3rd scale planes is exploding this winter.

Things are not good here right now, so my building is on again and off again. I do hope to finish it by fall, in time for Ohio and Indiana.

Hey, Mark . . .

Got a chance to visit the Fokker Factory - aka Del's Basement this weekend, and got some pics of von Delby and his bird:

Del holding the top wing (without wingtips, it darn near reaches the ceiling!):

Top wing, lower wing, with Del holding the cowling:

And a bit closer, with the stab as well:

And just a few more:

Del with the bottom wing (again, no tips on it yet):

A bit closer - that's the rudder and subwing hiding back there!:

I think Del's enjoys his work!!!:

Hey Lee,
Those pictures are great. You can really get in idea of how big 1/3 scale really is. I definitely need to stay with ¼ scale and with two-piece top wings. Lol I can’t wait to see the finished project at Dayton this year.
Thanks Lee

Hey Del - you seem to have more building room than me... what's up with that ? looks real good. Having you stand by the wings does give us the size of things. 1/3 scale does open some doors for more scale detail, in that, you can find some off the shelf parts that can plug right in... at 1/4 scale a lot of them have to be fabricated which does run up costs. Actually, the triplane is rather small compared to some other 1/3 scales out there. You look at the wing chord and wonder is it really 1/3 scale. Meaning you multiple by three and now it's full scale and your climbing in to fly it. Not that much wing... but times three wings, there is plenty...

This might give you an idea of how big it's going to be.

Can you name the characters in the pic? LOL!

Can't quite make out the guys, but the airplanes sure look familiar. Howdy Guys

Got the mid wing mostly framed up, same proceedure as the other two except the center section.
The rear of the two center ribs where the arch attaches will also be set at an angle .
Each cutout or arch will be laminated using 1/16 bass wood and 1/32 ply. Should make for a very strong structure.
Again will use the provided cardbard template or pattern to get the proper radius on the arch.

Hey Del- Your Fokker is looking very nice, I can't wait to build an airplane I can put together with glue. I'll tell ya building everything out of metal is not alot of fun. I don't know what I'll build after the D-8 is done. I'm very interested to see how your fuse comes together using dowels. I always wanted to try that. You should have the finest fokker triplane on the planet when your done! Keep up the good work, Tom

Ok, after much consideration I decided to change the color scheme from Muller's to Baumer's.
While I still like Muller's scheme, I like Paul Baumer's 204/17 (early version) much better.

There's also a color rendition in Osprey's book #40, Dr.1 Aces of WW1, pages 36 & 44 figures #11

And the nice thing about this particular colorscheme is that you'll only have to mask and paint 11 of them iron crosses

'morning, Del - I too really like this scheme - there's a lot going on, but it still will feature that fabulous Fokker streaked camoflage. One other nice thing about it is that at least you have the serial number, and therefore the werke number, instead of having to guess.

Tom.......This will be my first time using dowels for a fuse., just love a good challange. We know it's doable cause Glenn did it on the DVI. Will make for a very nice scale appearance.

I should have it about ready to cover by Toledo. I will have it there in the bones in Glenn's booth, hopefully with engine, cowl and servos installed. At least that's the plan. (But like Lee always likes to point out, Gen.Custer had a plan).

Lee.......You know me, I just love to build wings and paint crosses.
Accually Baumer's scheme was my first choice, then went with Muller, you know how I like stripes, Then decided to go back with the first choice.
